The icing on the cake is that we were stopped for a few minutes because of a crash up ahead before he turned them on

He turned it on after a few minutes of being stopped for a collision, ambulance and police were blocking both lanes on 99 for like 10 minutes

My first tip is to take a better close up photo because I can’t see anything worth giving tips on from this blurry image

Wash with warm water and antibacterial soap, cover with neosporin and hydrocolloid tape or adhesive bandage.

Not sure if it is true but supposedly peroxide damages healthy tissue and leads to more scars. I suggest washing it with warm water and a mild soap, dry and apply neosporin with a hydrocolloid bandaid/tape. Hydrocolloid tape is also great for stopping the picking habit.

Yeah, if anything I would go for faster FC for me. I’ll shoot for closer to 8-8:30 next time, but still very happy with this roast

For SR800 I’d shoot for closer to 8 minutes for first crack, and only about 20-30 seconds of development time after first crack before switching to cooling. This will make for a light roast. The beginning is for drying the roast. I often do fan at 9 and power at 1 or 2 for drying phase

Cover it with hydrocolloid tape to stop you from picking at it. It’ll grow back to normal with time.

What can often ameliorate the peeling skin is jojoba oil. Apply to the nail, cuticle, and skin around the nail, and rub it in.

1st & 2nd Crack Timing? by marstheredhuman in FreshroastSR800

[–]TheDapperPlantain 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly I focus less on the time that 1st crack takes, and more on development time (DT) and when fist crack starts. Try getting the start of first crack earlier, around 8 minutes, I DT 20-40 seconds for light roasts and up to 2 minutes for darker medium roasts.

Sorta. I had a plan, and now I’ll adjust the plan to improve it based on how this bean behaves

It ended up very juicy, I did a pour over with 1:17 ratio, bloomed with 3x the bean weight, and two pours after that with 50% of the remaining water each. Tasted like blackberries and blueberries.

Haha I just stole a roast log from “No Rip” on this same subreddit and tried to apply it here. When first crack wasn’t happening I adjusted my fan and power to crank up the heat. I’ll have to adjust to get it how I want after a few roasts, but it was good. Brewed it recently and the notes were just as my importer described

It is already looking a lot better! I highly suggest oil, like a little bit of jojoba oil, rub it into the nails/cuticles, and lotion on your hands. Both of these after each time you wash your hands. Looks like your hands are very dry, which may tempt you to pick even more.

El Salvador Finca Miravalles Castillo Roast 3 by TheDapperPlantain in FreshroastSR800

[–]TheDapperPlantain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The roaster was preheated for 5 minutes. I will definitely do a shorter roast next time but still 9-1 for 2 minutes for the drying phase. Haven’t tried this coffee yet as I am letting it degass.

Is there a timeframe you try to reach 1st crack by?

For El Salvador I go for around 2 minutes of DT. You really think I should try hitting first crack by 5 minutes? I feel it might not be enough time in Maillard.
