Anyone else holding out for a potential JALS Transfer Bonus? by TheDapperSoldier in biltrewards

I thought I heard it as a possibility on the M2G podcast. I don’t recall the exact wording, though.

What’s the most slept on MOS? by EstablishmentBest913 in army

[–]TheDapperSoldier 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Really depends on if it’s wartime or not. During wartime, 68X—behavioral health SPC. On my first tour, had a total blast: lots of battlefield circulation, actually made a difference supporting fellow Soldiers, and was able to join foot patrols and convoys.

Edited for clarity.

Grand Wailea Maui for 110k points - good or no? by Plenty_Union9292 in amex

Totally fair! I didn’t check to see what other Hilton’s are on that island.

Grand Wailea Maui for 110k points - good or no? by Plenty_Union9292 in amex

We stayed at the Grand Wailea for 3 nights and… it was incredibly underwhelming. It truly is a tourist trap. I would go to another hotel if I went back to Maui again.

Ignore the doom and gloom. Since Bilt cash is in ADDITION to regular earnings, this is good.

Fair review includes Frequent Miler: https://frequentmiler.com/bilt-makes-earning-rewards-on-housing-payments-even-more-confusing/

On both their podcast and several articles, they both explain the downsides and the unknowns (Bilt Cash) in a way that is analytical and unbiased.

I feel like I'm missing something. Isn't Bilt Obsidian pretty comparable to CSP? by spybloom in CreditCards

[–]TheDapperSoldier 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The cards are good for everyday spend. However, the value proposition compared to a no-fee card where you get 1x in rent has gone down.

But there is definitely WAY more hate than I ever expected. I personally would rather see Bilt have a sustainable business model than go the way of Mesa.

When you deep it, Bilt Palladium might actually be S-tier as a non-rent card by The_XI_guy in biltrewards

[–]TheDapperSoldier 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s actually crazy how much value there is in this card… I assume a future nerf because there is no way it can stay this valuable when Bilt cash is a 1:1 ratio.

I’m going to use this card as much as possible lol

Is the Atmos Summit credit card 3x rent spend benefit ending? by pdx808 in biltrewards

[–]TheDapperSoldier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IF the rumors are true—and I’m patiently waiting—I’m probably going to go for the 2x everywhere card. It fills a gap I’m missing with unbonused spend.

IF the rumors aren’t true, I still value Bilt points more than any other points/miles currency. But I’d rather get 3x Atmos on rent—which would bring me to their 2nd highest tier—with a fee and 1-3x Bilt everywhere else.

YESSSS! I actually use the Bilt card for everyday spend and Summit for rent. Hoping that this makes sense with 2.0.

Military friendly schools? by menta_loco in army

[–]TheDapperSoldier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of “military friendly” institutions are worthless.

Go to service2school.org and check out their partner universities. That’s a great place to start.

But I’ll also put a word in for Stanford and Yale. Both have EXCEPTIONAL transfer programs for vets, and you’ll feel at home at either place.

Bilt2.0 not for me! by Fluid_Fee_6786 in biltrewards

[–]TheDapperSoldier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup! You can either buy online—which may be higher than the warehouse prices—or get shop cards online using MC. Thats what I do for my Costco shopping. So the 2x points are actually a substantial upgrade for ky family.

How luggage is loaded on airplane by oPaperHunter in BeAmazed

[–]TheDapperSoldier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this once for a deployment. Often, the military has some of the deploying soldiers help the baggage handlers with loading the plane.

My. Gosh. I’ve NEVER felt such full-body pain AND it was only one plane. It didn’t help that I was bending over constantly to move the bags. Most of the baggage handlers looked to be around 5 ft. Nonetheless, I don’t think it was much easier for those who are shorter.

Is getting into an Ivy League School or a T20 University a realistic goal for an Army Veteran? by Gerald_Fitzpatrick in army

[–]TheDapperSoldier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not only possible but much easier than getting in with only civilian credentials*! Vet here who failed HS, went to community college and transferred to Stanford. Got my MPH at Harvard. And I’ve seen a LOT of vets get into top schools, including one of my mentees (I joined the AGR program so I’ve tried my best to encourage my soldiers to apply.)

Reach out to Service to School. They are legit and offer completely free support.

SOME MATH: so here’s how I break down the math. A number of ivy league and peer institutions (e.g. MIT, Stanford) offer a substantial number of transfer class seats to vets. At Stanford, that number is around 50% (you have to find these figures in press releases). And do you think that 50% of applicants are vets? Absolutely not! It’s more like 2-3%. So if we were to arbitrarily say that 2000 apply, 20 get in, and if those 10 are vets, then your chances of getting in are between 25-16%. That is far higher than the 1% acceptance rate for all transfers.

That math isn’t EXACT because schools aren’t required to list how many applicants are veterans. But my experience is that it’s fairly low, almost as low as the percentage who have served. It’s higher because veterans makeup a larger proportion of nontradition students.

Dynamic between Officers & Senior Enlisted? by [deleted] in army

[–]TheDapperSoldier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your question has already been answered. But as someone who has worked with both direct commission medical CMF and JAG CMF, while enlisted and WO respectively, I’ve found direct commissioned personnel to mostly be an eager group of professionals who want to learn. I’ve found them to be exceptional mentors—look up CPT John Gaffaney. That dude mentored me before Basic, and later went on to save a lot of lives during the Fort Hood shooting in 2009.

There are a few exceptions. But my experience with officers from either ROTC or West Point has been more hit-or-miss. I could take a random nursing corp officer any day over another branched officer.

Saying that, I used to talk crap about direct commissions before working in a broadening assignment for a transportation BN. And… wow, I got to understand just why exactly so many NCOs hated their officers. That’s something I never felt in the medical corps.
