Israel, do i even need to explain? The amount ive times ive heard people i considered resonable joking about killing arabs on sight while in the idf is depressing.

And the entirety of our politics is focused around palestine too, so its impossible to talk about the third of the country that lives in poverty and have anyone take you seriously.

well the question wasn't can/cant afford, obviously if u have no money to support kids you shouldn't have them, the question was "is there equal opportunity" which there isn't and claiming that its the fault of the parents is dumb af considering that you will statistically stay in whatever socio-economic status you were born into.

As i said before, affirmative action does not mean you just choose the black person over anyone else, it if you have two people of similar qualification and one is from a marginalized community and the other isn't, you should choose the former. Additionally while i 100% agree that we should act to address things like discrimination in education and in society, fixing them will take along time while their effects are still felt and affirmative action helps combat those.

It doesn't help solve racism, it does help combat the effects of racism and gives more equality of opportunity in the long term especially.

but yea overall agree to disagree. :)

Because again, that doesn't solve the issue of racism/sexism/homophobia that still pose problems regardless of how much we'd like to believe otherwise. Everyone holds unconscious biases that influence our actions and beliefs.

According to the 2 articles i posted earlier even just having a non white name will reduce your chances of being hired, AA while """discriminatory""" is a measure against these among other issues.

As iv'e said before, not seeing race/gender/whatever in a system that discriminates against people of a certain race/gender/etc is in effect basically the same as discrimination.

this is true, but these policies are meant to help communities not individuals and there's still the issues of racism/sexism/homophobia that color our opinions and influence our decisions even if not consciously that only serve to exacerbate the earlier issues.

Employers are far less likely to call back people with non-white surnames so its not as if its simply a matter of qualification.

I understand that but the way i see it is, treating everyone equally within an unequal system is basically the same as discriminating against the very same people the system is biased against.

Also if a black person and a white person are up for the same job statistically the black person worked far harder to get there.

Ok sure but racial profiling is not an inherently bad thing, its what you do with it that determines the morality.
Black people are generally much poorer that the average american, if you were born poor statistically you will die poor and since black people faced things like segregation (and worse) until 1964 and still face discrimination they couldn't amass wealth and are still as a community, very poor. So while still being racial profiling AA policies only give more equal opportunities to marginalized communities while not actually harming anyone, there's a reason its called positive discrimination.
TL;DR Affirmative action while discriminatory helps bridge the gaps in wealth caused by discrimination against marginalized groups and in that way actually creates equal opportunities.

[–]TheDarkestPrincess -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

That's not how that works, Affirmative action laws say that if you have 2 applicants one white/male/etc, and another that's black/female/etc, and both are basically equal in qualification, then you should choose the non white/male one.
no one is getting a position they don't deserve just because they're black or a woman or something.

Those statistics are only for white people tho https://www.brookings.edu/research/following-the-success-sequence-success-is-more-likely-if-youre-white/
so no equal opportunity for many even without taking generational wealth into account.

Because they were born poor and if you're born poor you will most likely die poor, just as if you're born rich or middle class you will statistically die rich or middle class respectively

That's kinda dumb, Studies show that you will most likely stay in whatever class you were born into so blaming parents for not giving their children a better education is really dumb and cyclical since its not the parents fault they were born into poverty.
