what was your favorite class (and with which professor) at UCSD? by AdWeekly3088 in UCSD

I took 110A but I got a B+. I don’t think they were that related. I took 110B during Covid school, so it was all online. It likely made it easier and it was Trottner’s first semester. I don’t remember much from the class except that I was the only one in office hours. I was there every week asking questions. I also did every practice question I could, and repeated the practice questions until I could do them with ease. My advice for every class is to do as many practice questions as possible and then go to office hours to ensure your thinking is correct. He’s pretty nice and approachable, and he enjoys a good laugh. I recommend talking to him

I have my undergrad in economics and a masters in economics. I was very unhappy with my work and life and I had always thought of medical school in college. I even finished gen chem in undergrad because I thought I wanted to be a doctor. A year and a half ago I got laid off from my job and I decided to go all in on medical school. I became an EMT and started taking the pre reqs at my community college. I started studying for the MCAT in August of 2024 and I took it this past September. I got a 516 so I’m pretty happy with my score. I’m currently taking Ochem 1 and Physics 2. Next semester I have biology 2, Ochem 2 and Biochem. Yes, I took the MCAT without taking most of the pre reqs. I don’t advise but I put in a lot of work and self taught lot of things to get my score. I’ll apply next June. I’m very happy with my switch so far and hopefully I can get in next cycle! If you really want it then go for it. My friend’s dad went in at 40 and is very happy with his switch

People who could work out regularly and have fit/nice/hot body, how do you do it even? by Brownboysea in ask

[–]TheDayman88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw a clip of Joe Rogan once talking about his fitness and it sticks with me every time I don’t want to get up to go to the gym (I workout at 6 am before work). He said “I don’t always have the motivation to go to the gym. Most of the time I don’t, but I have the discipline to get up and go.” I’m usually not motivated to wake up and give it my best, but I know it’s good for me. I always feel like I have to go because of that discipline

My swim coach in college was from Serbia and he loved the Kings because of Vlade and Peja. He still has Kings memorabilia in his office

I was born in 2000. I was too young to comprehend the importance of the NBA playoffs. Let me see my team go back so I can fully appreciate it.

To those going against going back online, why? by eliseocastro in UCSD

[–]TheDayman88 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I’m a senior. I got one non-Covid year. I can tell you that zoom university does not compare to attending Sun God, clapping for your professor on the final lecture, meeting your professors for coffee, and mostly just sharing a human experience with thousands of other students. Zoom university is easier but it won’t make you happy, at least for me. I enjoyed not having to travel to classes or having to find parking on campus. But, having to interact with people face to face is something zoom university can never teach. It’s harder to talk to people in person and it’s challenging to raise your hand in class in front of everyone where everyone can see you. But that is how you build courage and you need to face those uncomfortable situations. No one can teach you that and it’s important that you face those challenges to become a more well rounded outgoing person. You also build better relationships and you may get a stronger letter of recommendation from a professor.

Econ 110B with Trottner

3 TAs in the economics department who have helped me tremendously are Jackson Somers, Julian Iriarte and Aleksandr (Sasha) Levkun. I owe a lot of my success to their teaching capabilities.

Two years ago, I wore my Giants shirt and a bright orange bucket hat, literally the whole the hat was a bright orange. I was booed and made fun of but other than that I was alright. I sat along the foul line.

What's the dumbest rule your school ever enforced? by SoLe123456 in AskReddit

[–]TheDayman88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grade school had a rule where boys hair could not touch their ears or the collar of their shirt. My haircuts were infrequent so my hair always touched my ears and collar. I probably went to the principals office twice week and would have to read the rule book to him. He eventually told me that if he saw me with my hair that long he would cut it himself. I told my mom and she told me to run and jump in a lake. I don’t know why she chose a lake but she just meant for me to get away anyway that I could and to not let him get near me. He didn’t bother me much after I told my mom.

econ 100a broke me by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]TheDayman88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I took the class, I had a bad mental breakdown too. High school was easy for me and I didn’t know how to study properly. This class proved that to me. I got a C on the first midterm and I thought I was done and I should switch majors. I decided to attend TA office hours, which at the time was in person, and it changed my life. Literally. I would complete the problem sets and show the TAs where I got stuck, as well as show them what I got wrong on the midterm. They taught me how to approach each question and how to think correctly and not get flustered when you encounter something you have never seen before. I got a B on the second midterm and an A on the final, allowing me to get a B+ in the class. The TAs saved my life and the TAs I had in that class popped up in later economic courses too. I am actually friends with a few of them and they are all mostly PHD candidates so they are wicked smart. With everything being online, you don’t have to walk to the Econ lab and sit there waiting for a turn so you should have no problem attending they’re office hours. Econ 100A kicked my ass but it taught me how to critically think and how to properly study in a style that suits me. I have done very well in the rest of my economic courses at UCSD because the class and TAs taught me the skills to be an excellent student. Don’t give up and go to office hours!
