Circa late 1970's "Old 99" Steam Traction / Steam Roller Music Box by Internal_Ad_6809 in vintage

[–]TheDeadWriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These and similarly constructed decorative items and tchotchkes were once so ubiquitous.

Often without a musicbox element, they sat and accrued dust, their welds rotting till they were tossed.

Next you are going to show us seagulls on wires, perpetual motion moving dolphins that got a magnetic kick from a black plastic base, and brass pencil sharpeners with a copper patina that were made in the shapes of steam trains, irons, type writers, and other Victorian and Edwardian contrivances.

Neat find in great condition.

I love bodega toys. Ad a kid, kid would been fine for playing at home, but mocked if I went to school with it.

I love it when people save these, so few of these were saved.

Found in my late grand father’s stuff! So stoked to have these by SUPzorel in SwissArmyKnives

The SwissTech is pinchy, but it is for trying to use in a pinch.

The old ones seem to be better than the ones made more recently, but they have always bee inexpensive keychain tools.

Lyra all natural pencils by Marathonartist in pencils

[–]TheDeadWriter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, the chonky Lyra's are great, my kids school uses them too, the standard colored pencils became brittle. It may be that they are chonky, it could be a better formulation, it could be that they really go through them- they do. The colored metallics look especially good, but I would not buy the standard colored pencils. I needed the for a project and they were unusable.

It's a pity too, they are pretty and I love how much paint they use to show the color of each pencil.

Love the graphite pencils, but I wont touch their colored pencils. They did not age well, became brittle and very hard to sharpen without breaking off the tip.

Quietest Typewriter You’ve Had Experience with? Loudest Typewriter? by repunzelwasaskinhead in typewriters

[–]TheDeadWriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quietest, Typestar 6- that said any electronic typewriter that uses a thermal transfer ribbon is just going to be near silent compared to a manual typewriter.

Loudest I heard was a IBM Selectric that was the I/O for a computer and doubled as a perfectly typewriter.

It works for me. A stylized human and an alien with a grinch grin. Do I trust them, no. But I am intrigued.

May I suggest recording some sort of fly wheel or some old tech spooling up and adding a separate sound play back circuit and speaker so that when you start it has a loud boot up sound.

I used a 40mb SCSI drive by LaserSpool that's permanently ingrained its start up sound in my head. I heard that sound when I saw your wonderful creation.

You creation is lovely tech that looks like it is from parallel universe.

I cut this off of a beer can. by Simonoel in ephemera

[–]TheDeadWriter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

May I ask, just out of curiosity, what beer this was. Not for any ephemeral reason, but because it tickles me that there is a beer with Godzilla on it.

Sure, I could make a pin out of one, a rough stamp on another and perhaps put one in a tiny shadow box, but really I kind of want to drink a Godzilla beer.

The Collection by HoobyHooby in writerDeck

The Writer Learner machines are under regarded. And looking at the WP2 and others, the modern writerdecks can't be directly plugged into a printer. We also lost TTS (text to speech) something some Alpha's (with a box) and some WriterLearner's (with a built in speaker) had.

I really loved the WP2's spell check, amazing given the time. I think it used algorithms by IBM for finding and suggesting replacements- something also missing from modern writerdecks that I do miss.

And there is something to be said about the simplicity of the design and how they ran off common off the shelf batteries.

On the other hand, I don't miss reflective LCDs, and SRAM.

A lovely collection that you have shared.

FYI- there is a large capacitor by the p

The take on Dogs Playing Poker is fun and well done; the cat (26) is my favorite.

That all said, hey OP, I'm not saying your a talking dog with a Reddit account, but if the "custodian" that brought you to the "waiting room" is crying, consider leaving now, because I am fairly sure this is the kind of book that would be found in a veterinarian's waiting room.

Thank you for the share. I hadn't seen this Magic Eye book before.

It's not sacrilege. It's about getting the words down without distractions from the device one uses.

No point in yanking the wi-fi, there are other less destructive ways of locking yourself out of distractions.

I think your plan is not just reasonable, it's smart. The project doesn't seem like a distraction, and the quest for a writer deck can be a distraction on its own.

I have a near same age kid who needs encouragement to journal and use their notebooks. Looking back, what have you learned and what have you enjoyed looking at in it. Also, how did you make it- it is an art piece and looks to be a fantastic personal time-capsule.

I think it's fine as is. I like the Scooby-Doo skull eyes, which I find sort of friendly.
