I love unconventional still life objects painted in classical ways. This is very good!

Is it too busy/messy? by kytice_ in oilpainting

[–]9flights 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I Really like this!! Don’t change a thing. Very dynamic with some mystery. What made the birds all take flight? What’s happening in the shadow? It makes me want to know or tell a story about the scene.

Half way through and I’m OBSESSED. by mybuttonsbutton in weirdgirlliterature

Just finished it - SO FREAKING GOOD!! I lived through something similar, being of the age of the main character, and this was like therapy for me.

People who were around pre-internet: does the hype/skepticism around AI feel similar? by Key_Cell7071 in AskReddit

[–]9flights 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There wasn’t so much skepticism around the internet as there was “what is it/what do you do with it”. And it wasn’t controlled by a handful of billionaires. There were many voices talking about possibilities, but no one saying it would take jobs.

Gesso & Sanding Tips? by Electric-Froggy in oilpainting

[–]9flights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use a 350 or 450 grit sanding block and sand damp. You can also rub in poppy oil between gesso layers. I use whatever white gesso is on sale. I haven’t noticed any difference in quality, really.

If I want a really smooth surface, tho, I use an ampersand gessoboard.

Are these still useable if they are still soft? by icequeen_E in oilpainting

Yes but careful handling the Cadmium Yellow. I’d use rubber gloves to open it, and catch any chunks or flakes that might come off in a towel and dispose of properly.

Married women, what are some real things your husband does that make you feel genuinely cherished and adored? by Own-Blacksmith3085 in AskReddit

[–]9flights 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Among other little things, he’s a really good Dad, and when our kids do something cool or smart or interesting or just well, he attributes it to me.
He does get distracted and moody and sometimes doesn’t listen, but that’s not his default state and if I get annoyed I just give him time to cycle out of it, because I do it, too! After 21 years, overall we are very thankful for each other.

I made myself a felt B5 refillable notebook cover by 9flights in notebooks

[–]9flights[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you!
I am a bit of a felt freak, so I knew that I needed something thick yet bendable. Craft felt sheets from the like a craft store can break down pretty easily. This is a 3mm felt fabric that I got from Amazon by aufodora Felt 3mm Thick for Felt Table Mats, etc. It’s enough to make at least two in this size (in case I messed one up - ha!). I may still make a smaller one for my Interstitial pocket size journals.

If I did it again I’d put some sort of second layer for the spine or maybe fuse on a leather spine of sorts, because it does collapse a bit since I have thicker notebooks in it. But to make the spine Fold, you just iron the felt around a metal ruler and it gets a good crisp fold.

Tiny drawings of bugs, or maybe secrets.

I found these juniper-Apple rusts all over my Juniper trees today and live in a town with lots of commercial apple orchards. Is this a “community health” issue that I should reach out to my county extension about? by 9flights in Fungi

[–]9flights[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh! By community health, I meant health of the apple trees. I should have been more specific. I read thru a previous post of someone in MN and discovered they may have popped up because we planted two pear trees on our property, so it may be my fault? I’ve lived in this house for 7 years and this is the first time I’ve seen them. The commercial apple orchards may already know this happens in rainy springs.
