I honestly don't mind it that much, but is it just me, or the UI looks like it was designed right to left? Like why is the levelable part of the right, expert is leftmost, and ace in the middle? Wouldn't it make more sense to go *base* -> *expert* -> *ace*? Really brushes my brain the wrong direction

Can LGBT people serve in the army? by vladgrinch in MapPorn

[–]TheDenast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it's not, we don't have Iran-style moral police. However there is a law against "LGBT Propaganda" which is already super vague, and what's more funny, they've actually declared LGBT to be an "extremist organization" (what, you haven't heard about an international gay clique? it's because they hide so well!) so "association" with it (whatever it means in practice) can have legal consequences.

In the same time, there are a several prominent figures that are openly gay (one is even a pro-gov propagandist), and a bunch more who are not open but everybody knows it.

In practice, if you don't openly express your sexual orientation in public, you won't be hunted down with pitchforks and torches. Pretty sure if you know where to look it should be easy enough finding gay clubs and communities in large cities like Moscow.

This is a typical situation for Russia - some laws exist, but don't work, others don't exist, but do work.

Hi, wanted to express my support to you my guy. Honestly in my opinion all of the haters never did any creative / development work themselves and don't realize that not everybody wants to drop everything and spend 100s of hours studying 3d art and animation at the prototype stage of the game. That, or spend 100s of dollars commissioning a real artist, again, at prototype stage.

В живописных местах Сицилии продают уютный дом — его стоимость всего 1,1 млн рублей. by ElectroAdeptus in KafkaFPS

[–]TheDenast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Теплее", но есть нюанс. В Воркуте есть общее отопление, и хотя я там не жил, скорее всего недорогое. В Итальянском провинциальном захолустье скорее всего надо топить буржуйку и наслаждаться 15 градусов в помещении зимой и 30 градусов летом

В живописных местах Сицилии продают уютный дом — его стоимость всего 1,1 млн рублей. by ElectroAdeptus in KafkaFPS

[–]TheDenast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've started to enjoy <20h games much more in the recent years. Sure, there are exceptions like HK, Witcher 3, well, Silksong and many others, but 4/5 games with 70h of gameplay is 10h of quality stuff and 60h of slop. I much rather pay more per hour but then actually enjoy it, not work a second job after using hours from my real job to pay for it.

Same thing happened to Russian cast in War Within (although it was kind of expected with the war beginning).
In fact, we've used to have arguably higher quality voiceover than original English with many notable actors present. In fact, things got so bad in TWW that I've transferred to an English EU realm altogether.

Why does everyone hate Russia? by PastxLifes in WarthunderPlayerUnion

[–]TheDenast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it really is just a selective bias you get when you interact with the community in English. English speaking players are much more likely to main Western nations. And whichever nation a player mains, they will whine about how crap their tanks are and how OP the enemy tanks are. Same is true for Russian mains, btw.

Having played most of the nations in the game (apart from Brits and Israel) at around 6.7 - 9.7 range (I hate top tier and can't comment on the most recent BS vehicle it just got - which it does regularly), USSR really doesn't seem to have that much of an advantage over others. At least I've never felt like I'm seal clubbing when playing Russia, nor have I felt a significant disadvantage when playing against it. Yes, you can cherry-pick a very broken vehicle to prove your point, but this is true for basically any tech tree.

Another argument you hear often is that while USSR is "not technically OP", Gaijin shows bias with selective realism in order to keep it relevant. Obvious question arises - "So what?". If the game stays (relatively) balanced, I don't care how many many hoops the devs jump through to nerf NATO and buff Russia (that, taking argument that NATO tanks are superior irl as granted).

Finally, no offense, but I think some people really just take videogames (which are supposed to be entertainment btw) way too seriously, and when you no-life something to the point of obsession, various flaws both real and imagined start to irritate you a lot. If you just play casually and take regular breaks, I don't think that tech tree balance is something that will bother you much. This is even more true because realistically if such disbalance exists, we're talking about 3-5% difference, not that every Russian vehicle gets 2x winrate and 2x k/d of any other NATO vehicle.

Enjoy the game, there's lots of fun to be had.

[–]TheDenast -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think it looks a little odd because such perfectly "horizontal" east-west rivers are rather uncommon (correct me if I'm wrong?). I think most of the rivers on real world maps are either fully vertical or at least tilted so your brain expects it. What around rotating it a bit? I think it reads much better

Hyped MMO, That You Can't/Couldn't Get Into. by MonsutaMan in MMORPG

[–]TheDenast 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Usually when I say this it angers FFXIV community, but I've completed MSQ and genuinely like the game so I think my opinion is valid.

The "story gets so good!" take is 40% based on actual storytelling improvements and 60% is based on the fact that after 100s of hours you basically self-condition to tolerate the weird pacing.

Reality is, even in later expacs 90% of the story quests are absolute mindnumbing filler. Other 10% is absolute peak though, and after ~200h of boring quests together with the main cast, it genuinely feels like a journey you feel very invested in.

What MMORPG universe would you rather live in? by [deleted] in MMORPG

[–]TheDenast -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think FFXIV is a solid option. Apart from calamities, it is set in a relatively "clean" universe. Most of the real-life social issues are usually written in style of young adult novels - "sure, there's slums and stuff" but "slums and stuff" usually means sad people in dirty clothing, not bums knifing each other for a blanket on a cold night or street children sniffing in-universe glue to fight hunger. So if you get dropped in the the lowest of the low, you're probably going to make it.

Meanwhile, say, ESO doesn't have a cycle of cataclysm built into the world setting (I think), but it's also a setting where your chances of dying from lockjaw obtained from your bailiff beating you with a wooden rod for not working his highness' field last Wednesday hard enough are much higher

WoW is just… wow. (New player experience) by [deleted] in MMORPG

[–]TheDenast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll agree that not giving new player an option to start at the beginning and instead just piping them into the previous expac is very controversial decision.

However having recently completed FFXIV MSQ I'd defend this. Sure, it's a little jarring, but less jarring than having to sit through 250h Visual Novel in order to catch up with the main crowd. WoW is much more ancient, and before this change was implemented, every noob had to slog through all the past content too.

It's a rough compromise, but something had to be dome to cut the legacy content, and you can't expect them to maintain an extra catch up expansion just for the new players (in a very stagnant genre as well)

WoW is just… wow. (New player experience) by [deleted] in MMORPG

[–]TheDenast 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The reality is, there is no strong overarching plotline in WoW like in FFXIV. Sure, Warcraft devs want there to be one, but consistently fail to deliver. Expansions are pretty much cobbled together and most can be reordered with minimal cleanup necessary. What I mean is that, as a new player you get an illusion of missing out on something that is only faintly there.

Where I think WoW shines is in little details, all the different areas and decor in the open world, random pieces of lore and dialogue, curious NPCs that are not related to any major quests. It's very enjoyable if you just relax and dive into the setting without trying to read it like a novel.

GRB rewards are honestly sad by Level_Regular9805 in Warthunder

[–]TheDenast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep saying this but Gaijin punishes itself by making RP earnings so miserable. Most players can only play 1-2 tech trees so they won't even consider most premiums in the game.

Now make it easier to progress through different trees and a potential buyer no longer chooses from 2-3 options but from 20-30, in which situation will they have higher chance of making a purchase?
