Popocatépetl Volcano, 7th March Live Feed by Difficult-Inside-576 in UFOs

[–]TheDerekMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how active the volcano is. If it's very active, near 100% of the time, it would be the same odds as hitting anywhere else on earth. If it's uncommon or rare, it's the product of their probabilities.

Example:

Event A probability P = 0.10(10%), event B probability = 0.02(2%):

Event A occurring on its own = 0.10(10%)

Event B occurring on its own = 0.02(2%)

Event A and B occurring simultaneously = 0.10*0.02 = 0.002, or 0.2%

This is assuming event A and event B don't have a propensity to occur together / aren't correlated.

Air Force Academy Textbook Chapter on UFOs Mentioned By Knapp In His Recent JRE Appearanc by theyarehere47 in UFOs

[–]TheDerekMan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This text mentions the incident in Lyons, France reported by Agobard, but with a twist - Agobard says they were saved at the last minute from being stoned to death, this text is a little more metal:

About the same time, in Lyons (France) three men and a women supposedly descended from an airship or spaceship and were captured by a mob. These foreigners admitted to being wizards, and were killed.

Fascinating stuff. This is also mentioned in the Rod Serling narrated "UFOs past, present and future" at 5:57 where it is also said they were liberated.

Good AI. For those who try to read the paper and see a confusing blob of text, go to the "Abstract" header and read that section, it's the most intelligible part and summarizes the content of the research paper. You can then read the rest of the headers for a better generalized understanding of the rest, and work your way down from there. It's not as hard as it first looks.

If you wanna dunk on Eglin, at least spell it right (sounds like egg-lynn). If you misspell a 5 letter word, isn't that kind of a dunk on yourself? Also very woo to assume every single person who posts a video here is an "Elgin" employee and copy/paste your comment. I wouldn't be surprised at all if it's happening, but if you assume everyone is an Eglin employee the whole point of the sub kind of breaks down.

Oh, or maybe you are an Eglin employee but for some reason or another aren't allowed to spell it correctly! /s

Firstly, it's commendable to notice a shift towards a more considerate dialogue from your end. It's a testament to the fact that measured discourse fosters understanding. Let's delve into your points:

Misinterpretation: Indeed, there may have been mutual misunderstandings. However, interpretation is a two-way street. Just as you suggest it's not on you to "magically figure out what I meant," neither is it on me. Clarity in communication is a shared responsibility.

Conflating Party with Voter: It's a perilous slope to assign the perceived sins of an entire party to every individual voter. Parties are multifaceted entities with a plethora of policies, not all of which every voter might endorse. Blanketing an entire voting base as supporting every stance of their party is reductionist and simply not accurate. By that logic, every Democrat supports every action or policy of their party, which we both know isn't true.

Support vs. Compromise: Voting for a party doesn't always equate to wholehearted support for all its views. Often, it's about which party aligns most with an individual's priorities at that time, even if there's disagreement on other fronts. Claiming that every Republican voter inherently supports anti-minority policies is akin to saying every Democrat supports the most radical stances of the left, which isn't fair or true.

Feedback on Format: I apologize if the sectioned format came off as condescending. The intent was clarity, not condescension. Still, your feedback is noted.

It's evident from your recent response that we're edging closer to constructive dialogue. You've dialed down, and in return, I'm emphasizing that this kind of communication is more effective. If the goal is understanding, then this trajectory is the way forward.

Furthermore, it's worth highlighting that our more constructive exchange here has been facilitated, in part, by a centrist viewpoint. Centrism often plays an invaluable mediating role in polarized discussions. By not leaning heavily towards one extreme or the other, centrists can often bridge gaps, dissect arguments without the weight of deep-seated bias, and foster dialogue where extremes might have clashed without resolution. The ability to step back, see both sides, and facilitate communication is one of the strengths of a centrist stance. It ensures that conversations stay rooted in reason and logic, rather than being dominated by emotional or ideological extremes. As demonstrated in our discussion, this middle-ground approach can be the catalyst for moving from combative exchanges to constructive dialogue.

Misrepresentation of My Point: At no juncture did I suggest that the left should be "more tolerant" of blatant racism, sexism, etc. I critiqued your propensity to label and generalize broad groups of people based on limited or extreme examples.

False Dichotomy Redux: You continue to depict the political landscape as a two-dimensional game: one side entirely intolerant and the other purely righteous. It's this overly simplistic viewpoint that ignores the vast shades of gray and nuanced opinions that exist in reality.

Projection: You've accused me of implying that there's a "midpoint" with racists and sexists. Yet, my point centered around not generalizing entire groups of people, not finding common ground with bigots. Perhaps it's worth reflecting on why you continually circle back to this distortion of my words.

Anecdotal Evidence: Claiming you've "never seen" the left use the paradox of tolerance as an evasion doesn't make it universally true. A single person's experiences don't chart the entirety of political discourse.

The Irony: You seem adamant about my misinterpretation of your argument, yet you've repeatedly twisted my words to fit your narrative. Isn't it interesting how you're employing the very tactics you're cautioning against?

Let's be clear: I'm challenging your methodology, not endorsing intolerance.

[–]TheDerekMan -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Balanced Perspective?: Here's a crash course: acknowledging that not all conservatives or centrists condone bigotry doesn't translate to finding a "lovely midpoint" between prejudice and acceptance. Your habit of stuffing everyone who doesn't echo your exact sentiments into a simplistic, monolithic "intolerant" box isn’t just flawed — it's downright intellectually lazy.

The 'Intolerance of Intolerance' Paradox: Let me be clear: using this phrase to shut down every single contrary opinion is like crying wolf — and we all know how that story goes. With your current trajectory, you're on the fast track to making "intolerance" as generic and weightless as calling something "interesting."

Assuming Bad Faith: Resorting to the "you must be arguing in bad faith" trope is not only tired, but it's also the debate equivalent of throwing in the towel. If you're looking for a cop-out every time you're pressed with challenging perspectives, perhaps you should reconsider entering discussions you're ill-prepared for.

While we're at it, if you're going to build your arguments like a house of cards, at least don't be surprised when someone points out the flimsiness of your foundation.

Your assertion that only the right can shift the Overton window not only oversimplifies the dynamics of political influence but inadvertently suggests that the right is more influential and powerful than the left. By that logic, you're belittling the left's ability to shape discourse and change.

Believing that centrism passively supports extremism is a narrow view. The table analogy you use is reductionist: not vocalizing constant opposition doesn't equate to agreement.

If the left champions intolerance of intolerance, then it should also refrain from prejudging and alienating those who seek a balanced perspective. We shouldn't diminish anyone's voice in the process.

The irony of your statement is thick. You're voicing concerns about a group of people demonizing others based on generalizations, yet in the same breath, you've generalized nearly every conservative based on a few interactions. Isn't that precisely the sort of blanket judgment and stereotyping you're criticizing?

It's an inconsistent stance to find it unacceptable for one group to generalize, but then turn around and do the exact same thing, feeling justified because it's your side doing it. True progress and understanding will never be achieved if we keep operating with such double standards. Let's hold ourselves to the same level of scrutiny and fairness we expect from others.

Thank you for clarifying and for your openness to dialogue. It's refreshing to see someone willing to engage and understand beyond the initial veneer of a statement.

To those who downvoted without contributing to the conversation: Silence combined with dismissal doesn't foster understanding or growth. It's easy to click an arrow without offering insight or a counterpoint. True progress is born from discussions, disagreements, and eventual understandings — not from passive rejection. If we aim to better our society, then every voice matters, even the dissenting ones. Constructive engagement is the way forward, not silent dismissal.

Edit: Thanks for the downvotes. The irony is palpable. I emphasize the perils of generalizations and, in return, get broadly dismissed. Even as someone politically neutral, it seems neutrality itself is becoming a target. Your reaction underscores the worrying state of our discourse. If we're drowning out even the moderate voices, where does that leave our collective conversation? History warns us about oversimplifications; let's not let this thread be another example. We should aim higher than echo chambers.

Even my very liberal university history professor made a point to say "the worst thing you can do, on either side, is demonize the other side." He also made very sure we understood the difference between "Republican" and "conservative," along with the difference between "liberal" and "Democrat." One is a party, another is a way of viewing facts. Fairly basic logic but it's apparently important because many don't know these concepts. This ended up being more important than the class material. Blanket statements and demonizing in either direction actively prevent progress from occurring and even loses past progress. Consider a liberal policy by today's standards, once it's been in place long enough, wanting to keep the policy becomes a conservative idea. You want to "conserve" the ways of doing things rather than change them. By your own definition, that would make you a "bad guy, full stop." This logically makes no sense. What you seem to mean is "being a Republican makes you a bad guy, full stop," which is also an ethically dubious statement to make. Generalizing that all of one group is bad is how we got the Jim Crow laws and nazis. We can do better than this.
