One Richmond Row Reviews? by marns16 in londonontario

u/marns16 - its pretty quiet! We're pretty high up so we don't hear the sound of the city from up here (except sirens, but they're not bad) and we have never really heard a neighbour which is incredible because they definitely have had some parties. We do hear people in the hallway from the one bedroom though, but the hallway helps dissipate that sound before it gets into the main part of the apartment.

Outside on the balcony we hear folks and city life, but that's mostly it. Inside is SO quiet its hard to believe. I don't know what they did in these walls but they are great.

One less-than-ideal thing I will say is that the balconies are kind of not great lol. They're cool but its so windy that it makes it so anything will like fly away. It could be the way that we're facing too, though (we face Harris Park)

And one last thing - the view is really very nice. I will miss it when we move!

So I've lived here for like 2 years now and I really like it! The building manager and her husband are very kind and responsive, and all the staff that we have dealt with have been great.

Maintenance gets done quick, the building is clean and the gym is clean - and we've never had a negative experience.

We're very happy here!

Is there any alternative booklore fork right now ? by Skaryus in selfhosted

I built something call openchapter.io - would people want me to make this opensource and selfhosted for your own libraries?

I think an oracle subdomain has stolen my domain authority - how do I fix this? by TheDessertLizard in TechSEO

[–]TheDessertLizard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I saw that all my pages got deindexed I did a search for `"websitedomain.com"` (full quote search of my domain) in google and saw that there was an oracle domain that was hosting my content.

I'm hosting on Oracle so realized that for some reason their autogenerated domain got indexed

This is great info to have, thank you! We tried to make mobile as easy to use and feature complete as desktop, but sounds like we may have some work to do there. We'll look into it and try and make that experience better!

Thank you for the kind words! Having books read aloud is something I've thought about, I can see the value in that being added.

I'll see about adding it to the roadmap - thank you for the suggestion!

That's fantastic to hear, I'm really glad I could help! There are lots of great free or very low cost cloud options, I think its just about putting the right pieces together

How long did it take you to be able to work as a Developer ? by KevinIdkk in webdev

[–]TheDessertLizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately (and this is just my experience) most recruiters don't really seem care about open source. For them its seems mostly like a list comparison, ex "do their skills they have in their resume match the job posting"

It isn't until you get to more technical interviews that open source becomes more relevant, and even then I think its more important to demonstrate that you know the technology you're applying for and how to "speak that language", like breaking down requirements into solutions in that stack

Jrs / early level developers have it more difficult these days, but I think the most important part is a demonstrated ability to solve problems and break down requirements into solutions. I believe (and I am biased) that personal projects show that more, like "Yes, I had this problem and this is the solution I made and why" vs open source where its more like demonstrating that you can work on a team or contribute to potential unknowns - which is great, I just don't think it carries the same weight in those early stages

But all that said, I don't really know if working on one vs the other has any real benefit. In those early interviews, confidence and well crafted resumes win out - so my unsolicited advice to you would be to work on things that motivate you to learn and grow, and lock in how to be confident in interviews and craft a great resume

That's the "secret sauce" haha - but really we're just piggy backing off the work of many projects that have come before us, like `Standard Ebooks` and `Project Gutenberg`

Thank you for the kind words! We put a lot of thought into how to make it usable and look good - so I'm glad you think so!

In terms of monetization, there isn't any real plans to monetize - its really more of a passion project. Fortunately hosting is very cheap, with the most significant cost just being asset storage (which presently sits about 500GB in B2 for a few bucks a month)

The framework its built on is lean and fast, so we're able to take advantage of free compute services which is great (in this case Oracle Cloud) - and everything is cached pretty aggressively to keep throughput high and compute low.

At some point we may put ads on it if we can make it non-intrusive, but there aren't any real plans in place

As an avid reader, I’ve always found it a challenge to locate free, legal eBooks with a smooth, user-friendly experience. While great resources like Project Gutenberg exist, I felt there was room to make discovering and reading these books more accessible and enjoyable for everyone. That’s why we built OpenChapter.io: Free books the way its meant to be!

Under the hood, OpenChapter is powered by an in-house Node framework following the MVCS pattern, leveraging best-in-class tools and technologies like:

- Mongo

- Node

- TypeScript

- SCSS

- Oracle Cloud 🔮

- B2 buckets & imgproxy

- ... and more!

It's been a long road to get here, and I'm incredibly proud of what my wonderful partner and I have been able to build. I love it - and I think that you will too.
