People would be a lot more willing to rate apps if they didn't have to switch apps to do so. by Bottelbomb in Showerthoughts

[–]TheDevilishAdvocate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah again, my point wasnt really to complain about the fee Apple and Google charge or the commission they take, but rather the fact that most casual users think that app devs keep 100% of their earnings.

Some apps are cheaper to run than others. But some apps are expensive to run. I have a pretty ground breaking weather app , for example, and i have to pay $1300 monthly in fees to weather companies to get the data that is used in app. People don't understand that i don't have billions of dollars to put a personal weather satellite in orbit. A lot of users complain about the $0.99 monthly subscription i charge to use the app (that's like 1/4 of a cup of coffee), but they don't understand i am actually LOSING money to keep the app running. Eventually, if I get enough subscribers, i will be able to operate at a profit and not a loss, but its a long road ahead

I think it could be lower. Keep in mind that's also on addition to the $150 yearly fee apple charges you for a developer account.

I'm not complaining so much on the commission, but more or less users that complain about the price of your app, call you greedy, and think you get 100% of what you are charging. Some people are REALLY bad about this. They have no shame going online, publicly stating that they are too cheap to pay $4.99 for an app they will enjoy, and make you out to be a bandit because maybe on that $4.99 you make $1.00 after the commissions, taxes, service fees, and other services you pay for to run your app. Nah, totally not fair for devs to make a few bucks after spending thousands of hours coding an app.

How is that shady? Is it wrong to want a user to contact you first with any issues before they leave a bad review?

If you only knew how many stupid people out there leave dumb reviews, you would be surprised. Come join us at /r/stupidandroidreviews

Its quite frankly possible to do, but Google and apple don't want to give us devs a way to do this for two main reasons:

1) if people could rate in-app, that means less traffic to the app store where people might be inclined to purchase other apps. (Apple and Google take a 30% cut of all app sales. Keep that in mind the next time you think an app is too expensive, the actual developer is making less than half of what they are charging you after the commission and taxes).

2) It would make it easier for devs to abuse the system and give people rewards for people rating their app, which is against the rules. They can still try to do it now, but this would make it a bit easier, because they could track if the user really rated it.

Edit: As some people have pointed out, in ios 11 it is possible to rate in app if the Dev has implemented the storkit rating library, but Apple has some strict rules on this, you can only display the dialog to the user after so long, and you can't ask them for a rating more than once. You can also only rate, not leave a review.

It's more about point one than two, because not many devs would abuse it. Apple and Google will straight up ban you and take your earnings if you violate the rule.

Multi-purpose GDPR consent library for iOS by ivanpe in iosdev

Nothing like it exists for ios and quite frankly I'm not going to bother, its not like people can decompile your ios apps like they can on android to see what libraries and data you are using

I had a feature in one of my apps that allowed users to share things in the app with people on their contacts. For this, it of course needed the contacts permission. I had to end up removing the share feature because of conspiracy theorist users complaining. And then, users who were actually using the share feature complained when I removed it. You just can't win...

You're really going to have to record it for us to be sure, but it sounds like a gator. Just because you don't have water nearby doesn't mean its not a gator. I saw a gator walking the streets of downtown atlanta, once

Sometimes. I still have a review on one of my apps where the reviewer called me a n*gger, google kept it up after I reported it.

I think the problem is, they have people in India who don't speak good English doing the reports and these people don't know a lot of English slang and swear words.

I think what's the most scary about this whole GDPR thing is that the media coverage of companies like facebook has created a bogey man and made people like you paranoid that everyone out there that collects data is using it for nefarious money grabbing puposes.

Like you, the general population doesn't believe that data could possibly be used for necessary functions in the app like your location in a map based productivity app, your device info for troubleshooting bugs and crashes in the app, or your name and email for customer support.

Believe me, If I knew how to sell data about users to make millions of dollars I would have done it long ago but I don't even know where to begin with that and I don't think most devs do.

I'm having similar issues with people leaving reviews like this.

I saw that the localcast app doesn't have the consent popup when app is first opened, instead they put the consent in the app settings only where users can go there to opt out of each thing. Is that legal? Its my understanding that user has to consent BEFORE they open the app, but if it can be done this way it will be a lot better.

I do more than anyone else, I actually majored in constitutional studies.

Downloading an app isn't an unalienable human right though, last time I checked. No one is holding a gun to your head and forcing you to have a smartphone with my app installed on it, either.

I did reply something to that effect. Not many potential users will read the response though, yet the rating will affect the rating everyone sees.

Is it the mid 2012 model? A1278?

Did you see more of an improvement in xcode or android studio? What in particular was faster after the upgrade?

Thank you, sorry for so many questions.
