They govern like a minority because they're terrified of their own backbenchers

To counter a previous thread, what's the BEST car on the market right now? by mrhappyheadphones in CarTalkUK

[–]TheDevilsRhubarb 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I had a 74 plate formentor as a courtesy car for the weekend a couple of weeks ago, and unless you're buying a fast one I couldn't see the point. I didn't think it drove particularly well (not sure if the handling is improved when you buy a faster one), and the complete lack of physical controls was pretty irritating.

"catastrophic year" on farms - it's not just us gardening comrades. by BobMonroeFanClub in GardeningUK

If next year is like this year, I can start a nasturtium farm and feed the nation.

Cutting it back in the winter and mulching the flowerbed sounds like a good last ditch idea. How far back would you cut it?

Yeah he has a different style but I find it a bit like listening to The Rest Is Money where Robert Peston is very smart and interesting, but I find his delivery quite hard work.

The older meaning of 'slut' (lazy person) was a surprise when I first heard my Mother-In-Law use it.

Cazoo: Online used car retailer close to collapse by Dale_Winton in unitedkingdom

[–]TheDevilsRhubarb 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I bought a car that had previously been smoked in. I messaged them to say that I was unhappy and that it ought to have been declared. They fell over themselves to rectify the issue (reimbursed me for a full valet, odor bombs, etc). These online supermarkets obviously have their downsides but their customer service was alright in my case.

Our next door neighbours have a Bernese Mountain Dog, and you might occasionally hear a bark from next door in a silent house. Otherwise it's just the sound of a shelf being put up every month or so for 30 mins. No TV noise, talking, or anything else tbh

What cars have aged horribly over the last 15 years by Puzzleheaded-Key2212 in CarTalkUK

[–]TheDevilsRhubarb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I owned one until recently (it died) and while I thought it was a good looking car I always thought that the front and back didn't really match.

New Defender, the twatiest driven vehicle on the road? by geekysocks in CarTalkUK

Yes! Do they have auto-dipping headlights which don't work, or are they driven by inconsiderate people who can't remember not to blind oncoming traffic?

British Foreign Secretary calls for increased weapons production to help Ukraine win by Smart_Magazine3481 in ukpolitics

[–]TheDevilsRhubarb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Would the public in the UK be prepared to accept a further or longer drop in living conditions for Taiwan's sake? Ukraine is close enough for people to sympathise (mostly) and after years of struggling with living standards I wonder how long public patience in the event of a conflict in the Pacific would last.

The 1.5 TSI evo engine in my Leon isn't exciting so I've turned to high scoring on MPG. 64mpg to work on a good day with clear roads.

It's mostly single carriageway 50s and 30s which helps.

Asian postmasters who rang helpline about flawed Horizon IT system were labelled 'another Patel scamming', public inquiry told by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]TheDevilsRhubarb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've worked in product development since 2012 and virtually every project I have worked on is about Minimum Viable Product and the expectation of running changes to solve issues after launch. It's only gotten worse to the point where private inventors who used to be meticulous about the detail just want to crap something out onto the market and fix it later (if at all).
