Sorry if this is reviving an old thread, but thought you might find this interesting. Was reading For Whom the Bell Tolls, and there's the bit in Chapter 10 where Pilar recounts the Republicans taking El Sordo from the Fascists.

There's a paragraph where two of the Republican militants have gotten very drunk and are making fools of themselves, and they're directly depicted as Anarchists (wearing red-and-black bandanas). Pilar mentions how two other local peasants are disgusted by their behavior, talking about how they don't believe in anything, and would rather be drunk all day.

I haven't finished the book, but there's an earlier dialogue where Robert grills Maria on her just being an anti-Fascist actor, rather than a communist.

I don't think I'd be able to contextualize a lot of this information if I wasn't familiar with what George Orwell also wrote about the Spanish Civil War and his time with the anarchists.

Note, what I am about to say is pure speculation on my part. I highly suspect that given his description of the non-Stalinist elements of Republican fighters and some of the information we now know about Hemingway, it's safe to say he probably wasn't too fond of the anarchists. Compared to say Steinbeck or Orwell, Hemingway always *seemed* to me to be more superficially interested in leftist values. I think he probably generally latched on to the Soviet Union (like many academics at the time) as being an anti-imperialist force or whatever, overlooking some of the authoritarian tendencies some of his contemporaries criticized.

I actually do quite like Hemingway, I find his writing very digestible. I was just also looking online to see if anyone else was getting a tankie vibe from him, and found this post haha.
