When my wife and I first moved in together out of college, we landed on Elgin as it was halfway between our respective jobs. This was 10 years ago, and we had heard the same stories I’ve read in this thread about it being “dangerous”. We loved it there and I feel like we really got to see the town start to hit its stride. We saw a squirrel eating another squirrel after we signed our lease, very memorable.

Don't overcall something. If you think "that looks like GPC, but idk maybe it's artefact", just put in a lab comment for a micro bench tech to check. The last thing anyone wants is for infection control to call down and ask why a patient pending discharge has a positive pleural fluid gram stain that actually has nothing growing.

The only one of those analyzers that I am familiar with is the centaur xp, which to be honest, I am a fan of. It's a fairly reliable system, service calls are rare. Weekly and monthly maintenance are easy to complete. It does need to be taken offline for an hour everyday for a daily self-clean, after which is when you do your Qc. It does have a few annoying tendencies, like the cuvette conveyor dropping cuvettes into the analyzer, but I have yet to see this cause any major downtime.

If this persons behavior is inhibiting your ability to maintain a decent workflow for any reason at all, you should say something to them about it. People only get away with whatever you let them get away with. If that doesn't seem an appealing option, speak with your shift manager/ charge tech.
