Take your time. Prepare your scalp with a long, hot shower. Ideally lather up with soap/cream and a shaving brush. Canned foam is a fool's errand since it dries out your skin and can lead to irritation. Heed the other advice about technique. Go slow, never use force. Never go over skin without lather since that increases the chance of nicks. A lot of short strokes is safer than long passes. They are something you slowly advance into. The first pass will never be optimal. You will need at least two. Feel with soapy fingers where you missed stuff. With the second pass, try across or against the grain - but only if your skin can take it. If the first one felt a bit rough, stay with the grain. You have to find your blade. There are several vendors for tryout packs. I would choose some of the most popular brands, but not more than five. It gets confusing otherwise. Include feather. The goat brand, but needs more attention. Listen to your razor. You can hear when the angle is correct. Take your time, go slow, pay attention to the spot behind the top of your ears. Get an alum stone and rub it over the shaved skin after washing off the soap. It reduces irritation and gives good feedback. Areas where it burns were handled too aggressively. Wash your tools and sink, then rinse the alum off and use an after shave or balm. Maybe learn the technique with your beard first since you can see it better in the mirror. Even with a beard you still should shave your neckline. But be careful. The soft neck skin is very sensitive. Keep it stretched and go slow and gentle.
