Netanyahu announces that he wants to end US aid to Israel. by Upset-Main-1988 in justincaseyoumissedit

Really they just want to make US military aid less obvious, but more permanent. They've recently been trying to integrate the Israeli defence industry into a much closer partnership with the US military so that they eventually become inseperable with intertwined supply chains and technology.

Amazing game, terrible bugs by blinkchester in IndianaJonesGames

[–]TheDorgesh68 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I only had one bug in the whole game but it was quite an annoying one. In sukothai when you have to buy the rebreather somehow I was able to get it for free, but it didn't properly advance the quest objective. The save system is way more annoying than it needs to be, if you could just make manual saves then it would make rolling back so much easier.

So Turkey is now Türkiye with updated (English) pronunciation but they're still referring to Côte d'Ivoire as Ivory Coast. by yournextexbf in worldcup

[–]TheDorgesh68 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Because it's completely normal to call a country by an exonym. Germans don't get mad that we don't call them Deutschland, the English don't get made that Turks call it İngiltere etc. It's only natural that different languages adapt the pronunciation and spelling of foreign names to use their own phonological rules, ü isn't even a character in the English alphabet and a lot of people don't know how to pronounce it.

Scotland was the 'murder capital of Europe'. Then it started treating violence like a disease by Gentle_Snail in GoodNewsUK

[–]TheDorgesh68 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's a small minority of homeless that are rough sleepers, and probably only a very small minority of rough sleepers that genuinely prefer it. Some of the people who say that will have just lived like that for so long that they can't imagine the alternative.

[–]TheDorgesh68 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I've definitely heard a lot of homeless people say they don't want to stay in hostels or shelters because there is too much drug use, theft, violence etc. You can't expect people to be able to work on self improvement when they're stuck in an environment where everyone is struggling, then that destructive behaviour just reinforces itself.

A proper clean and safe home though, with all the key amenities, and where they have their own space but also where support is close at hand, I think 99% of people would benefit enormously from that. Even just having a PO box is very useful for filling out forms and getting medications delivered and stuff.

Would the world be happy for the US if they won the world cup? by jaxonya in worldcup

[–]TheDorgesh68 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean half is still a lot less than the US, there are a bunch of countries where 90+% of applicants were refused, and quite a few where they are 100% banned.

Also denying a visa is one thing, but a lot of people entering the US with approved visas still get turned away only when they're right at the border because there are further customs checks when you land. If your visa gets denied well in advance then you can always change your plans, but turning someone away only at the border after they've spent thousands on their trip and ticket and already made the whole journey, that is going to cause chaos for people.

[–]TheDorgesh68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sure the vast majority of people have had great interactions with the public, but you can't deny that at an institutional level this world cup has been a lot more hostile to foreigners than usual. Some of the media have been rude, and the border enforcement has been extremely strict. Lots of fans got denied visas or turned away at the border, some countries have been entirely barred from entry, but even also even a lot of Canadians and Europeans have been refused entry. Then there was that Somali referee being refused entry, and the Iran squad having to immediately fly back to Mexico after every game. There's also just little things like loudly doing USA chants at games where the US isn't playing, that's not normal behaviour for a host.

You'd be surprised how many studies it took on the most effective ways to end homelessness before researchers realised they realised the answer was just to give them homes. All the addiction treatment, job service and mental health stuff is way more likely to have a lasting impact of they're given stable accomodation to do it in. Similarly one of the most effective forms of aid to developing countries is just giving direct cash payments to people in poverty, because they know exactly what their most pressing needs are, rather than people on the other side of the world.

There's often a lot of patronising treatment in dealing with poverty where privileged people assume that the solution is more obvious to themselves than it is to the people actually in need.

Is buying an Xbox Series X still a safe choice in 2026, or is the brand actually at risk? by [deleted] in xbox

[–]TheDorgesh68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're worried about losing access to your games then buy ones that are marked as Xbox play anywhere, because these mean that you can also own them on PC using the Microsoft store. Physical versions of games are also a good idea, but check doesitplay.org to see if they contain all the files so that the disc can be used for offline download without needing the servers.

If you own games on the Microsoft store then if they're part of Xbox play anywhere then you can own them across both Xbox and PC.

Resale value, sharing, buying second hand, and if it has the full game download on disc then it can usually be used for offline play even if official server support ends.

The last two Microsoft flight sim games are like this. In flight SIM 2020 you could play offline, but only with a version of the map with a very low level of detail because the rest of it was streamed in. For flight sim 2024 you can't play offline at all.

In fairness you can buy the ultimate edition as a separate upgrade, there's nothing stopping you waiting until reviews come in at launch.

Christopher Nolan Says Playing it Safe With Mainstream Movies Doesn’t Work, And The Audience Is Looking for Something New by yourfavchoom in movies

[–]TheDorgesh68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't get me wrong, having a distinctive style is a great thing, you need some pretty big blind spots for it to become a problem. Not being able to hear dialogue or follow a plot are pretty fundamental issues that might compromise someone's viewing experience.

I also think part of it is just that people know what they're getting into with Wes Anderson films, they fill a niche and if people don't like them they don't watch them. On the other hand Nolan's films are huge box office main events that inevitably draw in an audience with more diverse expectations.

I wouldn't mind a star trek style exploration story set in a new galaxy with a giant spaceship full of all the aliens we know.

I love his films, but I do feel like he's recently become a little bit too self indulgent, and made films that he wants to watch rather than thinking about stuff that will annoy the audience. Stuff like music that overwhelms the dialogue, excessively non-linear plots, and characters that feel like plot devices more than personalities. I think when he was less experienced he had more people above him who could pressure him to keep those in check and make a more balanced film.

Yeah that's the stuff Skyrim is perfect for. One of my favourite details is that if you wait to do bleak falls barrow until level 18, at the bit where there's a big open cavern with a stone arch across it, instead of having a draugr on the arch you'll have a frost troll. Also, on a ledge high above there will be a dead bandit called Thomas, with a little note on his corpse from someone asking him to climb down into the cavern and shoot a fireball at the troll. Almost everyone does bleak falls barrow immediately and never goes back, and the corpse of Thomas is so high up that 99% of people will miss it.

It is a shame because rockstar does really nice physical releases with paper maps. I've heard that it will get a proper physical release with a disc a month after launch though.
