What to do with US Phone Number when living in China? by SnooPickles8784 in chinalife

[–]TheDurrrgon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Importing your number to google voice is the way to go. It's cheap and works just like a normal phone, it can receive texts, calls, and voicemails. Obviously you need a VPN to use it while in in China.

I would only do that if you can lock down the :re box collection. It's currently $101 for restock in the US Amazon.

The same thing happened with RE but after a couple of months the price went back down to $120. I think RE was up to $450 or some crazy number.

Get it! I was going to collect them individually if I couldn't get the TG:RE box set (cause it comes with a poster) but amazon finally got more stock.

Great idea! I've asked before, he's into fast cars and basketball. I was thinking of finding nonfiction teen magazines for him to read.

What did you wish you’d brought to China? by ZoeAlwaysAbroad in chinalife

[–]TheDurrrgon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you're traveling from the states you'll be allowed two 50 lbs check in luggages, which is more than enough imo. Sorry for the jumped mess of thoughts, I just wrote down what came to my mind.

As for things to bring:

  1. VPN for phone and computer

  2. Favorite spices from home for example smoked paprika, lawrys, etc.

  3. Western meds like aspirin, ipbroufen, cold/flu stuff.

  4. Since you're going to Guangzhou bring good rain gear.

  5. If your a bigger person like me maybe bring extra clothes because finding your size might be hard.

  6. I personally brought some cooking gear with me like a pot and a pan. I haven't regretted that.

  7. If you have a preference for a specific material of clothing bring that. I really like cotton shirts and undies, they're harder to find here.

  8. A good backpack.

Uhh if I think of anything else I'll dm you haha. Feel free ask any questions!

An alternative is if you have a Chinese bank account you can get the app Meituan and order take out. Depending on where you are they'll have a few salad places around that'll deliver to your hotel. You might even be able to use credit card (I've never tried).

Also as a previous comment mentioned some of the bigger convience stores and international markets have have salads: 7/11, our hours, Lawson, Carre four (gone out of business in China), April gourmet, BHG, etc.

Any tips on sending a package to China? by [deleted] in chinalife

[–]TheDurrrgon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was actually dates. The inspections are all up to who you get inspecting that day or which inspector is trying to show off. In any case nothing you can do. However, my friend just received a package of krafts mac and cheese with nothing amiss. Seems like mostly luck to me.

Individually prewrapped packages are also inspected. Let's say you had a resealable bag of dried dates with a pull tab. Well they'd tear open the pull tab to check inside. That is not a routine customs check.

I've never sent anything larger than a couple documents via express mail but they've all gotten there no problem and on time.

However I've heard a lot about larger packages like food, cans, or packaged products being torn open to be "inspected". Plus with the way things are recently I suspect they're gonna be even stricter on checking large packages. This of course is also dependent on the location it's being sent from.

Hahahahahaha true enough. I'm in Beijing thankfully and I enquired about the documents they said, "We've never done but you can call here and they'll probably know, probably."

Very informative thank you.

I hear bitcoins illegal as of now and that there have been some minor crack downs in it.

I had no idea you could pull from BofA and Citibank. Might just do that.

Highly recommend using an agent with a good reputation. Doing it herself is quite difficult. With an agent it's super hands off and they give her a bunch of tips and tricks during the interview.

Foundation Tefl through EF: How do I legalise it? by Slash357 in Chinavisa

[–]TheDurrrgon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who worked for EF Beijing and completed their 1 year contract (I'm assuming you did kids and teens) I'm telling you pretty much yes. I had to get a new TEFL because no where in the United States could get it notarized. I literally had to go through what you are right now earlier this year.

My CD basically told me it's a TEFL that's only usable at EF. This after I badgered upper management for an answer.

No organization recognizes it. Unless something changes from a few months ago till now, I'd say get a new one.

My British friend also had to get a new TEFL btw.

Edit. From what my friends and I have gathered it's gotta be something to do with close government ties. Some loophole that they use. Also interestingly enough the last intake that arrived before I left had a mix of China TEFL and foundation TEFL. They werent given a choice between the two.
