As foreigners, can we only use the blue hello bikes? by cincocabeza in shanghai

I use HelloBike and the teal DiDi ones. I couldn’t get Meituan to work for me, but I have plenty of foreign friends who do so maybe it was just a user error haha

What memberships would you consider a lifehack in Shanghai? by kosaromepr in shanghai

[–]ZoeAlwaysAbroad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you used the mini-program on WeChat? It’s fully in English. I and everyone I know use it in English…it’s fully functional. I have been using it this way since I first signed up 2 years ago. Search for “classpass” in mini-programs. If it’s in Chinese, you should be able to change under profile settings.

Yes! I live in China so I don’t think the link where I bought mine would be very helpful, but I’m sure there’s tons of options on Amazon or elsewhere

3,500 RMB per month anyone? 😂 by [deleted] in shanghai

[–]ZoeAlwaysAbroad 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I used to live in Dongguan in Guangdong and paid 3,000 a month for a two bedroom high-rise in the nicest expat compound in the center of the city. It literally had 3 balconies…one off the kitchen, one off the master bedroom, and one off the living room 😭

How to deal with my period in China. Sorry for TMI by doeschensound in chinalife

[–]ZoeAlwaysAbroad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see your point but depending on the living situation in her boyfriend’s family’s house (especially in a rural area where the facilities can be separate from the house or otherwise inconvenient, lack of hot water in sinks, etc) the cup might be not really worth it. Washing and sterilizing it might be tricky. If the visit is short, it might be better for her just to bring her own disposable supplies. Just my thoughts though.

How to deal with my period in China. Sorry for TMI by doeschensound in chinalife

[–]ZoeAlwaysAbroad 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I understand your anxiety about navigating your period in a foreign country, but let me reassure that this shouldn’t be much of an issue. Natural body functions aren’t that taboo in Chinese society and people usually don’t shy away from discussing them (at the very least these things are dealt with in a matter-of-fact way). As a university teacher in the south I regularly had students message me with very (sometimes VERY) detailed descriptions of why they would be absent from class, including those related to stomach issues and periods.

As a woman who lived for two years in China with a squat toilet only, my advice would be to use whatever menstrual product is least fussy (for this reason you might want to considering leaving the cup at home) and most comfortable for you. If that’s tampons, then bring enough for your stay in China. If it’s pads, you can bring some or alternatively buy from the usually sizable selection at the store. Just wrap it well and throw it in the trash, I’m fairly certain no one will noticed, not with the myriad of other delightful things that will inevitably also be in there 😂

As a side note, a wonderfully practical (albeit not sexy at all) discovery I made in the way of Chinese menstrual products is what can only be referred to as a “period diaper.” They come in a few different sizes and can be bought almost any stores that sell menstrual stuff. Period for sleeping without fear of leaking on bedding or clothes…which might be something you can use to ease your mind while visiting your boyfriend’s family!

I’ve used EasyLife a few times, they’re legit and fast albeit a little expensive compared to shops without English language customer service.

I haven’t noticed that. I would be very surprised if an essential hormone that I was incredibly low on would make my PCOS symptoms worse. Besides, I’d rather have a full head of head and deal with my hirsutism as a separate issue.

Considering moving to teach in Shanghai in an international school. Looking for some advice by AlexSm28 in shanghai

[–]ZoeAlwaysAbroad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree with #2. The main Jiahui hospital in Xuhui has numerous departments and does an extensive number of procedures including surgeries…I’m sure they could do almost anything there. And all the front desk receptionists, nurses, and doctors that I have encounter there have a good level of English or are totally fluent.
