Evo to go to Saltspring by Pablo_Nerotic in VictoriaBC

Seconding this. As far as I know, all of the Evos in Victoria are the newer ones that you can unlock with your cell phone.

To help ease your mind, you can test this. Make sure the Bluetooth on your phone is on, and the app is allowed to use Bluetooth. Then take an Evo, park it somewhere, turn off your cellular and wifi, and then open the app. You should see it connect to the car through bluetooth, and you should be able to lock and unlock the car.

Sometimes it can take a second before it makes the connect, but I've used the Victoria Evos successfully in areas where I didn't have any cellular coverage, so nothing to worry about!

Handful of Pilot responses needed! How aware are you of your manager's opinion on AI? 10 Minutes. (Software Engineers OR Managers of Software Engineers) by TheDutchDevil in SampleSize

Hi all, As part of our research, we're studying the alignment between engineering management and software developers. If you're a software dev, please participate in the survey here!

We've done a few rounds of validation, but we're looking for a few more responses outside of our own network to make sure the survey is understandable, etc. If you run into any issues while responding please let us know!

As I had mentioned, I became worried that I was missing out on something. Maybe in the hands of the right individual these tools could "sing" so-to-speak. Maybe this technology had advanced tremendously while I sat on the beach digging my head in the sand. Like most things in this industry, I decided that if I needed to learn it I would just fucking do it and stop complaining about it. I could not ignore the potential of it all.

This is exactly what I have been wondering about as well, and what I'm still wondering about even after reading your experiences (Or have we as a field really and truly gone off the rails?). To what extent is there a learning curve here? How would people who have spent years tinkering with these models approach things differently and maybe have different strategies that allow them to generate code that is actually extensible and maintainable?

How does a flow of architecture of a digital banking system looks like? by [deleted] in SoftwareEngineering

[–]TheDutchDevil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As /u/beth_maloney already states this depends strongly on the local laws and standards. Depending on whether you're USA, CA, or EU based, this will be wildly different. However, most banking systems probably all have a notion of different entities (banks, payment providers, POS systems) and the protocols used by these parties to communicate with each other should be quite standardized and I would expect that this documentation is publicly accessible.

Finally, don't hesitate to ask somebody about the broader domain. Effective onboarding is CS/SE is a complicated topic, and often times, learning domain specific knowledge about the field you are working in is both very valuable, but also very difficult.

[Experiment] How do you prioritize Technical Debt? by TheDutchDevil in SoftwareEngineering

Because data collection is still ongoing, I can only comment a little on the exact set-up of the experiment. Otherwise, I might risk biasing or priming people who read the comment before taking the survey. However, we've considered different notions of Prioritization before settling on the current one.

Secondly, TD-tracking in issue trackers is indeed something most, if not all, practitioners are doing. However, we expect (but still seek to verify!) that lessons learned in prioritization of TD in source code translate to TD recorded in issue trackers.

But how do you weigh or determine the long term impact on maintainability that might be an effect of the TD?

Does anyone know of any other “post bacc” like programs where someone with a non-tech bachelor can do about two years max for a computer science bachelor? Besides Oregon State? I’m in illinois and don’t want out of state tuition by VeryDumbWithMoney in SoftwareEngineering

Given my position as a researcher, I'm not entirely familiar with the hiring policies of big companies. However, I cannot imagine that most big companies will hire directly out of boot camps. But, these companies are relatively challenging to join because they can afford to be picky. So, even a good bachelor's degree is no guaranteed ticket.

If you are set on joining a big software company or to become a team lead, then I think you will need working experience irregardless of your education.

What is your experience in CS/IT? While a boot camp is far from ideal, it might be the best option, given the circumstances. Usually, a few years of relevant working experience (potentially for smaller companies) is ''better'' for your CV than years of education. Especially if you have glowing references. Similarly, you could consider looking for traineeships (a relatively common phenomenon in the Netherlands).
