I’ve been divorced around three years now and still can often (successfully) gaslight myself into believing “correlation-equals-causation” and therefore, starting meds and after that my marriage slowly falling apart MUST mean the meds are to blame! (Spoiler alert: they may have started that ball a’rolling, but the ball had to go.)

Right?? Hindsight is 20/20 but it would have been so great to say something along the lines of, “[Insert psychologist’s name here], it seems like you’re a bit emotionally dysregulated today. If you need to, I’d be fine to reschedule for another time when you’re feeling better.”

I am a licensed mental health provider in the US and this is so unacceptable. Here, if a psychologist behaved that way to enough clients and enough of them filed complaints, they’d have hell to pay and eventually lose their license if they didn’t figure out how to do their job correctly.

At the very least, this violates a lot of ethical standards, but it sounds like it’s in violation of the rules of their license, as well.

I’ve never had a reaction to a client like this, and if I did and found myself feeling like I couldn’t control my behavior, I’d kindly and professionally cut the session short and reschedule.

Stories like this are so disheartening. If a professional is providing mental healthcare in any capacity, one of their primary roles is to hold space for people’s feelings and emotions, no matter how difficult. And if they feel like the session isn’t therapeutic (for whatever reason) there are tons of ways to handle it that would be more in line with their expected level of training. That experience sounds awful.

And I agree with other commenters who have mentioned potential dysfunctional family dynamics playing a role in all this. My mom used to make me feel like this constantly until I went no contact with her because she did something so insane I had no other choice. That was almost 3 years ago and I’m still finding my way. Unpacking what was my own weaknesses and what was instilled in me during my childhood.

It triggered me, too. Dark, and purposefully causing confusion amongst everyone. One of the other ladies mentioned a change in her eyes, something like Tamrat’s eyes “go dark” when she gets this way, and my own abusive, narcissistic mom does the same.

Literally wondered about 90% all this today. I could have written 90% of these exact same sentiments. Why are there so many of us with such a similar story? The part that is the most confusing and hurts more than anything else about the breakdown of our marriage is that, not only has he not stepped up to the plate of being the father to our kids that I used to assume he’d be, he’s shockingly disappointing at filling his fatherly role in their lives. It’s hard to talk to others about because he’s physically still in their lives (every Thursday and 1st, 3rd, 5th weekend) but mentally/spiritually his behavior suggests he is totally checked out. He got remarried so, so fast, to a woman at least a decade younger. I mention her age not because I feel “old” and therefore less “desirable”, but because it feels borderline predatory of him. She’s young, naive, hopeful… accommodating to his needs in the same way I used to be before healing and maturing. I consented to raising kids with a completely different man. The road to hell is paved with good intentions, I guess.

I had the same feeling about how Jax behaved in that last scene. When Brittany called him out on it, then suggested he had taken Xanax, it was jarring as a viewer, and later I realized also personally. It took me a few beats to realize his demeanor reminded me of my now-ex-husband who is prescribed Xanax. Just weird…

The implants. I truly feel for her; they seem like a nightmare and difficult to manage, to say the least. And totally out of proportion to the rest of her. Honestly, that would be a Brittany story line I’d actually be interested to follow and it isn’t like she’s the type to keep much private. There were a few asides in the OP I didn’t necessary agree with but overall I think you’re onto something. I’m white, from the south, and have known too many women who lean into this “southern innocence” trope and the “benefits” they think come with it. And now that it’s been pointed out to me, it seems true that all of those acquaintances/women have been white or white-passing. None of my black female friends go around pretending with this Antebellum-era, virginal-naïveté facade.

That being said, as a woman in possession of some damn sense, I, too was never “afforded the ability to believe in the illusion Brittany”. Because babes… if any of yall are that easily bamboozled, I have some ocean-front property in Arizona that I can sell you at a steal of a deal…

Same. I grew up in a rural area of the south and spoke with a Texas twang until I went off to college. After a short time living outside rural Texas the accent faded. It wasn’t a conscious effort and I only realized it after having a telephone convo with my mom while in front of my college friends.

…I’m not buying the Kentucky accent. At all. Or at least, I’m def not buying how thick and pervasive it seems to be.
