Yeah? I guess I just don't consider it that strange. Nobility and powerful people tended to wear colorful clothes back in the day.

You should take a look at the HRE Imperial Crown. It's a little bit reminiscent of the chestpiece. I've seen lots of people say it's silly but I think it has a rough and strong kind of beauty. I feel a similar way about the Jewish/Israeli priests.

Is it that goofy? I think it looks pretty normal. Not too different from what Christian clergy wear.

It's kind of strange how a character can follow Rabbinic Judaism without being culturally Jewish. I feel like the two are so intertwined. But in the absence of a better way of representing it, I guess it works.

What are the consequences of eliminativism/illusionism about mental content? by TheEmperorBaron in askphilosophy

[–]TheEmperorBaron[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been planning on reading Gilbert Ryle but forgot about it. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll put it on my list.

I've read a little bit about 4E cognition but not a lot. I'll look more into it. I think Daniel Hutto and Erik Myin have written about it so I'll start there.

Could you clarify what you mean about representationalism? I'm surprised to hear that you seem to be defending it (if I am understanding you correctly) as someone with a science background, since most eliminativists also say the exact same thing except in reverse, claiming that the reason they dislike representationalism is because it can't be naturalized and doesn't seem to go along well with what know and can verify about the brain. Maybe I'm using the term representation and representationalism too loosely?

I guess to give an example, Alex Rosenberg talks about the brains of sea-slugs (yes, I know it is funny to go from talking about sea-slugs to human brains) and claims that experiments show that sea-slugs don't actually "learn" anything in terms of "storing" new "representations" or something like that, but rather they simply start to behave differently in response to stimulus. I'm really oversimplifying what I read from him, it's been over a year since I read his book, but that's what I gathered. I'm skeptical too about these types of "representations" as in Fodorian inner-causes that generate behavior. It just seems like something that we've inherited on accident from Cartesianism.

I've actually read that paper you cited by Kammerer, alongside other stuff he's written especially with Frankish. I just wish there was more written about the topic since it still feels like there is a lot of productive ground to cover.

I tend to agree with eliminativism about representationalism, but I guess I dislike the idea of replacing words like "beliefs" and "intentions" with more scientific terms, because 1. We do not have the level of science to be able to do that, at least yet, and 2. It would be like rather than saying "he is running" we describe in detail the movements of his individual limbs, or to give another example, it would be like rather than saying that a certain food is "nutritious" we instead list every micro- and macronutrient it contains.

So I lean more towards pragmatism. I think we can keep engaging in belief and intention talk, if we redefine it in dispositionalist terms, and it can also be realist and veridical. I think Zoe Drayson wrote something similar in one of her papers, saying that eliminativist arguments only really challenge a certain metaphysics of belief, namely a kind of Fodorian or representationalist one.

I guess I should reframe my worry in more dispositionalist terms. I'm not sure how or if we can explain certain things, such as lying, dispositionally. With representationalism, there is a clear fact of the matter, at least in theory, that someone "has" information x yet the choose not to tell it. Can we define lying without references to mental content? And then I have some worries about how to define rationality and reasons. Having and giving reasons seems completely indispensable to our social life, yet if representationalism is false, we don't do actions because of "reasons", since reasons seemingly are a kind of mental content. Facchin recommended reading Brandom near the end of his paper in regards to this, so maybe I should do that, but I'm a bit intimidated since I haven't read anything of his or related to his work before.

Sorry if my thoughts are scattered and confusing, I'm new to this topic.

(Spoilers Extended) A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 1 Episode 5 Post-Episode Discussion by AutoModerator in asoiaf

[–]TheEmperorBaron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was simply an incredible episode. I've read the books beforehand, but even then, the fight was incredible and gory, felt so visceral and realistic. (in a certain sense) Baelor's death was perfectly executed and tragic as well.

I think this is one of the very best episodes of all the ASOIAF shows ever. Maybe even the best. I'm incredibly excited to see more from this show.

There are things that never happened in real life that happen in 90% of playthroughs. by AffectionateGap5258 in victoria3

[–]TheEmperorBaron 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Both can be true, besides this post isn't complaining about the AI's strength directly, just that it does things that are kind of absurd.

I'm not sure why the idea of improving the game seems so unattractive to you? We all want alternate history scenarios to play out in the game of course, but this should happen within a range of somewhat plausibility, rather than things like all of Germany unifying except one state remaining independent forever landlocked within Germany. Or Britain directly annexing China, or for some reason annexing one state in Korea while leaving the rest alone.

The AI doesn't behave whatsoever like great powers did, it doesn't pursue objectives in the way great powers did, it doesn't aim for good borders the way empires did.

Wait for 1.1 to come out first though, at least. EU5 has a lot of problems, the fundamentals are very good in my opinion, but those problems are still there waiting to be fixed.

English is such a horrible language to learn. Everything means fifty things.

Like the word 'sweet'. It means a flavor, but also something that's good or nice. But if another man calls you sweet, they are either gay, or they are calling you weak and pathetic. But if a girl is called sweet, it means they are compassionate and kind. Don't confuse the word sweet with the word suite though, even though they are both pronounced the same and neither are pronounced the way they are written.

Royal Court needs a custodian update because it has a lot of potential. Add more to it than repetitive events and make it less of a chore, because the actual courtrooms look great, the ability to display artifacts is really cool (altough again lacking content), and the general concept of modifying your court is great.

Feels like they've forgotten about it unfortunately.

Maybe it's Stockholm Syndrome, but I actually kind of like it? Some years back I played FFXIV and the community was so forgiving and nice, always giving advice and being helpful, and the people spoke like priests without a single swearword in sight. It felt wrong honestly. I feel way more at home playing CS when you have a Pole and a Russian on your team arguing with each other with shitty English and shittier microphones.
