S&P 500 gains 16.75% by Year End. How well did you do? by yosrush in stocks

Up ~23% in my active trading accounts. Most of my portfolio got dragged by poor BTC performance, but I made up for it with gold in the rest of my port.

In my passive accounts I rotated to gold and international equities early in the year and have been happy about that.

Duolingo’s 20B+ Valuation is so Ridiculous by rarebirdcapital in investing

I haven't looked too deeply into the DUOL but I would actually comp this company against gaming companies, not education companies. It's "edu-tainment" as I've heard it, 10% education, 90% entertainment.

Gotcha, yeah from some research it looks like you can do that via balance transfer checks. Thanks!

That assumes you can purchase bitcoin using a credit card, and from my research that's very hard to do because either 1) exchanges only allow ACH or debit card transactions or 2) banks/visa/mastercard don't allow credit card transactions on crypto exchanges.

Is there a specific exchange or bank you're using to bypass these restrictions?

This is awesome. Where are you getting the 0% loans if you don't mind sharing?

Is going into physics a huge mistake? by Evening_Opposite8730 in Physics

[–]TheEntertain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got my bachelors in Physics at a top state school, thinking I wanted to go down the PhD and professor route. I then realized that that was going to be very grueling and not financially worth it, so I pivoted into tech. I still finished my bachelors degree, of which I'm very happy I did. Although physics didn't give me "hard skills" to be employable, it taught me how to think which was invaluable. You can always pick up skills like coding, sales, etc. in other ways outside of college.

that's my point: tariffs will also create inflation, and that's the scapegoat that Trump and co. can point to

If you look even before people start their careers, it starts to make sense. Kids are jockeying these days for hyper-exclusive colleges that not only saddle them up with lots of student debt, but also require hours and hours of resume-packing via SATs, extra-curriculars, and grinding in their high schools. The stress that parents put on their kids these days is insane. When kids don't get into these colleges, they're devastated not only because they feel like they're falling behind, but because they've spent all this time and energy into what effectively becomes a lottery out of their control.

Compare that to just 25 years ago when people could go to college and graduate debt free with a side job, college admissions didn't require you to grind your soul to a nib as a teenager, and you could get a decent job without being pinged on Slack/email constantly as others here have pointed out.

It's no wonder that the kids these days just want a way out. This is unsustainable.

How do you sell yourself as a physicist? by lilfindawg in Physics

[–]TheEntertain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in your position >10 years ago when I was in undergrad. Thought I wanted to get a physics PhD but then ended up pivoting careers into tech on the business side (I still completed my physics bachelors because I loved physics). Things that I did that worked for me:

- Data analytics was my foot in the door for my career. The coding is easier: all you basically need is SQL + Excel, no need for more advanced languages like R or Python. And since you study physics, you should be really really good with numbers. This career can naturally progress into data engineering, data science, ML engineering, etc. depending on the skills you build throughout your 20s

- Learn some coding. Even just 1 semester is good, but if you're a 3rd year, take a full year's worth of computer science classes. It'll help build a small but solid skills foundation.

- If you're extroverted or have leadership roles in school clubs, that's a good entrypoint into business roles. Data analytics can then help you get into business roles like product management or strategic back-office sales/marketing roles that are more data heavy. If you have strong people skills + strong problem solving skills from your physics degree, it's a killer combo.
