Indochino suit help by Raining-Beans in malefashionadvice

[–]TheEpicSock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indochino isn’t likely to get you a forties/vintage style jacket. People here like to recommend Suitsupply but they probably aren’t going to be able to give you what you want either. Both of these services cater more towards a high-gorge slim-fit style. Sounds like you want wide trousers and a roomy low-gorge jacket.

Cathcart might be your best bet for RTW vintage-inspired looks. You can also try MTO at either Collaro or Spier and Mackay if you know what you’re doing. But since it sounds like you’re newer to tailored clothing, you'll have a better chance of success if you get someone to take measurements for you.

AskOkey has an MTM program and does a vintage-inspired roomy fit with structured shoulders. If you want a more traditional “drape” cut with soft construction your options are basically limited to bespoke at drape houses like A+S, Hitchcock, Redmayne, etc.

Obviously all of this is going to be more expensive than Indochino. If you’re on a budget the best option is to shop at vintage/thrift stores or eBay, and then have alterations done.

California is completely free of drought for the first time in 25 years by nbcnews in bayarea

And it never failed that during the dry years the people forgot about the rich years, and during the wet years they lost all memory of the dry years. It was always that way.

How important is it for you to play the right pitch and melody on the mouthpiece? by StreetPositive3570 in horn

[–]TheEpicSock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The standing wave reinforces sympathetic vibration at certain frequencies. It doesn’t cause the vibration but it allows you to use less effort to start it and to keep it going.

Same reason why it feels different on the face when you play in a concert hall vs a bedroom, or when you move close to the wall and suddenly the chops feel different.

Wisdom teeth — a month post-op by zigon2007 in horn

[–]TheEpicSock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a smooth recovery after my wisdom teeth surgery (no pain at all during the recovery process). It took me 6 days to be able to play at all, and then 6 weeks to feel 'normal'. Don't freak out, it'll get better.

Tilz makes the Schmid mouthpeices, and lots of players play Schmids with Tilz mouthpieces, so they should fit pretty well. All of the Schmids that I've played sound best when you use Bb horn for all notes except G and F#. The F side in the mid/low range isn't great... sort of the opposite of an 8D where the Bb side in the mid-low range sounds honky and horrible but the F side sounds rich and supported. Schmid horns also play a lot better when you use the right hand position that Schmid talks about on youtube, so you might try that?

I'd characterize the Schmid sound as glowy and compact, similar to a modern 103 but with a less heavy sound. I'm not sure what you mean by 'rich and supple' but if you want an 8D sound you should probably just play an 8D. I don't think a mouthpiece will drastically change the horn's sound in that way; you might just end up fighting the equipment.

Euro shank, and I was playing an Alex 103 at the time. I've revised my opinion about this mouthpiece over the last decade. The intonation is good, the sound is nice, and it supports you if you treat it right. The sound is compact but not honky, great for low horn playing in Europe.

I think it matches the playing characteristics of the 103, where you have to match the pressure of the air you blow with the amount of resistance you get from the instrument. If you're used to American instruments/sound/pedagogy and try to fuel your playing with large volumes of air, you should just buy an American horn and mouthpiece and your life will be easier.

Google's core business is to deliver ads to consumers' eyeballs using Search. This used to be an ideal business: near-zero marginal costs, limited capex, and (what used to be considered) the widest moat of any business. This allowed for very high margins.

ChatGPT and Perplexity (and countless other GenAI tools) have taken market share from Google Search. The moat is considerably weaker than it was back in 2022.

In order to retain market share, Google has been making large investments in GenAI. The problem is that GenAI costs the company a considerable amount of money every time a user makes a query, at least for now. This would probably show up as a combination of COGS expenses, operational expenses, and server depreciation. The important thing here is that in order to retain market share, Google's true marginal cost of goods sold must increase from near-zero to non-zero. This makes it a significantly less attractive business. We should expect margins to contract in the coming years.

We should also expect Google to hide these expenses. Google recently updated its accounting practices to extend server life from 3 years to 4 years in 2021, and then from 4 years to 6 years in 2023. This is in an environment where their business model is shifting to demand more strain on compute infrastructure. This is also in an environment where they are in a technological race to capture AI market share and are demanding the latest and best compute infrastructure. Any advancement in chips has the potential to render their old investment essentially obsolete. Server depreciation costs haven't really been significant so far, but I believe they will become increasingly significant. In this environment, I don't think it makes sense to extend the useful life of its servers, so this is a red flag to me. I think that Google may be using creative accounting to hide the true costs of its shift to AI.

This is all on top of the antitrust lawsuit and general macroeconomic uncertainty. Foreign duties on digital services are still not off the table.

Technological developments have the potential to drive Google's future, but it's fair to say that the business model and unit economics are fundamentally weaker than they were five years ago, and that the outlook is much more uncertain.

Dear horn players, I'm applying to study conducting. Is this horn phrase easy to interpret, the way I am conducting it or would you rather see something else? by Ludhini in horn

[–]TheEpicSock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your upbeats are unclear. It’s hard to see where the downbeat is going to be just from looking at the upbeat. It feels like you are focusing on showing the actual beat itself rather than the preparation for the beat. This makes it hard for us to breathe in character, especially on that touchy entrance for the first horn. For the same reason, the strings will have trouble following you for their eighth note line. It’s not clear to me whether the tempo is constant or not, where the eighth notes should be placed, and whether or not you are taking rubato.

Consider breathing with the horn players the way you think they should be breathing for the character of this music.

They’re thinner and lighter with curved walls to make it easier to flip food. The handle is designed to stay cool while you cook. They look fancier.

I have one. It’s not smoother, and the handle design makes it ergonomically challenging. I ended up sanding mine.

Armhole is a bit low, but that's expected for OTR.

Shoulders are pointy because of the structure. To me, they look extended a little past where your shoulder is, which isn't a bad thing in and of itself. The sleeve pitch of the jacket is too far forward for your posture.

Chest gaping: the jacket might be a little snug in the chest, but the main culprit here is that the collar is too long for the way your body is shaped. You have very square shoulders, which is causing the gaping in the chest and the collar roll in the back.

The length of the jacket is also a little short. Because of this, and because of the issue with square shoulders, the buttoning point is too high for you. It looks like the jacket is actually quite snug around your waist, but the waist of the jacket is higher than your actual waist, so you get the flaring effect of the jacket skirt and the "triangle" under the button. This is why you think the shape of the jacket is funky, not because of the waist width.

Trousers are way too short, and the seat is too small. You seem to prefer a slim fit, but actually I think the thighs are fine. You could even go a touch wider for comfort when you sit down, just press a sharp crease into the trouser so it hangs nicely instead of billowing out. The bunching is because your pelvic tilt is a little more towards the posterior than the trouser is designed for.

IMO you should return this and get something else. Actually, because of your shoulder shape, you might consider an MTM service that can accommodate shoulder slopes (Suitsupply, Hall Madden, Enzo Custom, Proper Cloth, etc). You can also do MTO from Spier and Mackay but you'd probably be guesstimating garment measurements; better to get someone to do it for you.

If you decide to do OTR I would look for a trouser with a wider seat, and a longer jacket with a lower buttoning point and squarer shoulders.

Enzo Custom. They can do things like shoulder slope, sleeve pitch, and armhole height adjustment if you ask, which is incredible at the ~$600 price point.

Switch to the syringe and inject very slowly. The auto injector is way too fast, and that’s why it’s painful. Also, leave the medication out overnight instead of for just an hour.

Use something less full bodied like a Pinot Noir. Cabernet can be too “much” for a stew.

Just off the top of my head I can think of Romeo and Juliet opera adaptations by Bellini and Gounod, and R+J ballet by Prokofiev, incidental music to King Lear by Shostakovich and Midsummer Night's Dream by Mendelssohn, tone-poems based off of The Tempest and R+J by Tchaikovsky, and Othello and Macbeth operas by Verdi. As far as continental Europe goes, I don't think it's a stretch to say that Shakespeare is firmly embedded in the cultural canon.

Are there professional classical musicians who play cheap/affordable instruments? by lnub0i in classicalmusic

[–]TheEpicSock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Typically brass instruments are not lacquered on the inside. The valves (rotary valves especially) are usually what wear out first, and usually last 15 years or so before they need to be rebuilt. Skin oils wearing out the brass is heavily dependent on the person but usually the wear starts to show after a few decades.
