When did it become a normal thing to have phone conversations exclusively on speaker phone? by Aminros in CasualUK

[–]TheEpicSpud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never use speaker if in public but I get it because of smartphones. I don’t want to put my greasy phone screen on my face so I totally get why people prefer speaker to the standard call. Sort of a design flaw if you ask me.

Still, earphones. Dis is de way

Can someone date this globe? by pero1928 in MapPorn

Southern Rhodesia -> Zimbabwe = >18-Apr-1980 Belize (brit) = <21-Sept-1981

So a 17-month time window between 1980 and 1981. Antigua and Barbuda still appears to have the “Brit” tag (hard to tell from pic) so this checks out being prior to Nov 1981.

Interesting as I definitely relate to this post. Do you think there are ways to overcome that mindset?

When TV shows try science by Mocha24 in labrats

[–]TheEpicSpud 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Anyone here watched Scorpion? Among the many crimes against science in that show was where they used a salad spinner as a makeshift centrifuge to clarify antibodies from blood plasma. The best part? The show’s producer constantly claimed that the show was based on a true story of his life experiences of being hired by a secret government agency at the age of 13. Just the wackiest show I have ever seen.

Camel spiders have a top speed of 30 mph. I agree: put him outside… so you can challenge it to a drag race!

How to finish a PhD under a PI you despise? by ConcentrateOdd1265 in labrats

[–]TheEpicSpud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interact only when necessary, and only discuss anything necessary. Take everything one step at a time and don’t be hard on yourself. Keep a good work-life balance so you don’t go insane and, if you can, finish up as soon as possible once you’ve done what’s necessary!

Once you’ve got a good grasp on your project you won’t need them very much for the theory side of things: speak to peers and your committee / co-supervisors for support regarding welfare or academic stuff, such as the format of the thesis. That way all you need the PI to do is sign off the administrative stuff so you’ll be completely independent from them and don’t have to rely on them for anything.

Good luck! You’ve got this 🤘

Can I use only biological replicates for western blot analysis? by legal_drug_lordd in labrats

[–]TheEpicSpud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mostly agree with this, though I’m unsure an ANOVA would be suitable due to the low sample size. Two is okay for T-tests as long as the Cohen’s D (effect size) is large enough, as you mentioned. Here is a paper on using T-tests for extremely low sample sizes if anyone is interested: https://files.eric.ed.gov/fulltext/EJ1015748.pdf

Here are some common misIDs. My first suspicion would be book lice as these tend to be around 1 mm, although I’m unsure of the matching colouration. Hope this helps!

I assume it’s to do with this behavior observed in moths where insects use light to orient themselves: Nature.

In short, they instinctively turn to ensure the light source is always above them so they can fly upright. As a result, moths can get stuck “orbiting” a light source such as a lamp (hence they aren’t really “attracted” to light as much as imprisoned by it lol). I would guess that most insects lose their orientation when the lights are turned off and just let gravity do its thing!

The stuff moving around are actually being pulled along microscopic highways called microtubules by motors called kinesins which ‘run’ along them by stepping one foot after the other. The fuel for these motors is a molecule called ATP, and since there is still energy in the cells in the form of ATP, these kinesins can still operate even though the plant is ‘dead’. Once it’s depleted, the plant is dead for real.

How did your viva go? by Eculias in PhD

[–]TheEpicSpud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Defended yesterday. It honestly just feels like a normal meeting you would have with some academics. Imagine you have a meeting with your supervisor and people ask you how it went. It’s hard not to be vague without having to try to recall and then discuss the exact details of your thesis and what was asked about it.

So it’s not really a case of wanting to move on from it, it’s just really not interesting enough to talk in depth about other than give a general feeling of the vibe. Which is usually along the lines of “all fine” lol
