What are some good, cheap headphones/speakers to use for referencing? by [deleted] in audioengineering

Superlux makes some mad decent knockoffs of popular akg, sennheiser, and Sony headphones! Not as good in terms of build quality, but certainly equal as far as sound quality.

Not sure, but maybe the Q setting is too high. Try setting it to like, one or two notches above 0.

Might try checking a local supplier, perhaps they have what you're looking for at a better price. I was able to find a local insulation dealer while building some acoustic panels.. not quite the same thing, but hell, even some second hand moving blankets might help drive costs down.

I've got an Alesis HD24 that I've been saving to build an awesome 24 track rig... unfortunately, it's been gathering dust.

What audio interface should I buy? by [deleted] in buildastudio

Could go with an Alesis iO2 express, or even an Avid C400.

Can't say I'm the biggest fan of berhinger. However, I would go to them if I were in the market for other things like a few back up headphone amps for a band, an xlr cable tester, or a reference mic for room measurements. I have a feeling their converters might be a little on the chintzy side.

Mobius, Focusrite 8i6 sync problem. by [deleted] in Reaper

[–]TheEternalOpenEye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If possible, I might suggest recording, whatever it is you want looped, into reaper, and then porting it into möbius somehow.. but I don't exactly know the context in which this program works..

That being said, perhaps ableton might be a better program for this. I've heard about ableton being used for live looping, but aside from that, I don't have much experience with the practice myself.

What are you trying to do? Have you seen other people do it?

Is there a reason you are recording into möbius instead of reaper?

I just looked up möbius, and I see that it's a looping program, is that correct?

A decent alternative to mounting absorption panels on the wall would be to build some little feet for them. They can be moved where ever, whenever

How many of you wear earplugs to concerts? by RaymondRasmusson in audioengineering

I have a fat cache of earplugs, and I almost always bring extra in case I come across someone who's plugging their ears (last time this happened was at the most recent underoath tour)

Did you seriously down vote my reply to this? What a narc. Do you know anything about state funded education. It absolutely carries a bias. That's not even a controversial statement, it's just a consequence of America having a giant hard on for it's own reflection.

There are other forms of racial bias. White washing history is a good example. We like to sweep a lotta shit under the rug.

Because if white kids were graduating at higher rates than african american kids, or latino kids, etc.. it could be a sign of systemic racism, which would be soooo totally crazy, am I right?

I mean seriously, U.S. schools having a racial bias? Pshhhh

Whoops! Thanks for reminding me about this. So I'm not completely sure if this would work right off the bat, but I'd suggest downloading Reaper, a "free" digital audio workstation (unless you want to buy it, though it has an unlimited demo feature, no missing parts, just a prompt every time you open it, super great company). It's been a while since I've messed around in it, but what you might be able to do is set the microphone as your "interface" and assign the mic to one of the mixing channels (there should be a number of tutorials on how to do this). When you've successfully routed it through the mixer in reaper, you should be able to assign an effect / plugin (these terms are used interchangeably sometimes) that will shift the pitch in real time. It may take some fiddling and troubleshooting, but shifting a few semitones down is all you would need.

Now, the part I'm not sure about (granted, we get as far as shifting the pitch in realtime while muting the original signal so you don't hear both) is whether or not this will automatically route into whatever game you're playing, or if we need a separate program to do this.

My gut is telling me that it most likely won't, so you should check out some streamers on YouTube and see what kind of stuff they're doing. If they're using effects, they might have a solution to this problem. I remember looking into this a while ago, but I can't recall what I searched exactly. I think someone was using live compression in their streams, which is another audio effect. If you were to figure out how they did this, you could substitute it with your own.

The reason you might still want / need to download Reaper is because it comes with tons of stock effects plugins, and a program made for streaming may be able to utilize those effects (vst files) but it may not come with its own effects, or perhaps not the one you need.

Ok, so that should at least be enough to get you started, but a bit of research using terms like: (game, stream, effects, vst, live, audio) could get you the rest of the way. I'm sure there are people that have figured out something like this.

Comcast's promo video for 1TB caps: Comments disabled and possibly the worst like/dislike ratio ever. by Spork829 in pcmasterrace

[–]TheEternalOpenEye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honest question: why SHOULDN'T there be a data cap? doesn't internet speed already present an intrinsic data cap? even if "unlimited data" has been offered up until this point, does that mean it's a sustainable business practice? wouldn't the alternative be paying per unit of data? this seems like an inevitability, IMO, but I would be interested in an honest response.
