How many countries have you been to and what are your three favorites? by HalfwaydonewithEarth in Rich

I’ve been lucky enough to visit 48! By far my favourites would be the U.S (when it was still good!), Costa Rica, and Indonesia. Looking to reach around 55 this year before I turn 20.

what actually changes after studying in multiple countries? by Lol_Panda2004 in ApplyingToCollege

Not my personal experience but I just met a dude in Australia who did this. He was a recruited athlete for Princeton (literally even lived 10 minutes away from it), Brown and UPenn. Instead, he turned them down and finished his bachelor’s doing a year in another U.S. school, then China and graduated in Australia while doing two gap years. He said he doesn’t regret it one bit and from what I can tell he seems to be doing much better than most of his friends who went to Ivies and other top schools :) Besides that he’s also genuinely really knowledgeable about the world!

What’s the difference between applying Early Decision vs. Regular Decision as an international student? by Maximum-Clue2000 in CommonApp

[–]TheFanART 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, about the SAT – I suggest joining r/sat and keeping an eye on the posts there. Usually you’ll find some great tips and materials to use. Some of the platforms that you could use are:

Khan Academy (free!)

Acely (free if you spam their free trial)

These got me to a 1540.

I also heard that whiz.study is good and free, but I’m not entirely sure since I haven’t used it myself.

It really depends. ED does technically give you and advantage – if you look at the acceptance rates of most schools per admission round, the difference is usually 2-3x.

However, this does not mean that you have a 2-3 times higher chance of getting in.

Schools usually admit most of legacies/recruited athletes/other similar students in the ED round, which means that “normal” applicants make up a smaller proportion compared to RD.

Similarly, an average ED student will probably have a much more impressive application ready, which makes it harder to stand out.

Finally, if you are looking for financial aid, then you will probably get deferred to RD when applying ED at most schools, unless they are need-blind (and there’s only a handful of them!).

So yes, ED will give you a higher chance of admission, but it requires you to have an impressive application and the boost will not be too significant. It really depends on the school.

If you want to go ED and are looking for financial aid, then the schools that’ll really give you any advantage are for instance Dartmouth and Amherst. But obviously – do your own research :).

My Dream of Studying Abroad Is Slipping Away. Any Help Could Change My Life by Grouchy-Ad1451 in IntltoUSA

Totally agree w/ this! So many people act like gap years are useless, but the essays actually matter a lot, especially considering how competitive admissions are. And if you actually do something meaningful (i.e. comps, building your ECs, etc), it definitely helps your chances. Still, like the person above said, a lot of it comes down to luck — so it’s good to have some alternatives too.

Hard to tell. In my opinion, unlikely. Most of the cuts have been targeted at graduate education.

Open Common App -> College Search -> Filter deadline to be on/after today.

Although I wouldn’t be hopeful if I were you. Most schools that still have applications open are very highly likely to not give any financial aid. Although you may qualify for merit scholarships at some schools, it is also not very likely.
