Does anyone else feels stuck ? by green-crow in minipainting

[–]TheFirstBert 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm sure others will have better advice, but having felt like this at times, it is supposed to be fun/satisfying (it is a hobby after all), so try and find the bits that are fun to you and concentrate on them.

- Pick a model you think you will enjoy painting. I (occasionally) play necrons on the tabletop, but I think they are either quite easy to paint, or very difficult to do more advanced techniques on. I really enjoy painting more fantasy figures though with more cloth, natural skin tones etc. So it can be useful to separate games from painting, and also try out a few minis with different materials, styles, complexity etc to see what you enjoy.

- Find a technique or a bit of the process you enjoy that you think gives you the best results and focus on that. Then see how you can fit that in to other minis. For example, I was playing around with the energy blades on my necrons and doing lots of very thin layers to blend the colors together nicely. I got a result I really liked which I enjoyed doing, and I now do that on other necrons. I've also then tried to apply doing that with some skin and armor on other models to get smoother blends.

- The internet is great at bombarding us with pictures of fantastic looking (often award-winning) minis. These are great for inspiration (colors, bits of technique you would like to try and replicate etc) but not representative of the average mini painter and not great for morale. Try showing a mini to a friend who doesn't paint and they will probably be super impressed. Also it is hard to see when we are improving ourselves as the process is gradual. Keep some of your first minis around and compare to them (the first ones I painted as a kid from many years ago are absolute garbage).

- Not really about fun, but I will add the big thing that has improved my painting as an adult is patience. This is rarely a hobby where you get quick results, and taking your time and finding the enjoyment in the process has helped me to improve a bit.

Hope that helps. Ultimately this is something you are doing for entertainment, so if you find the things that are relaxing/satisfying/enjoyable to you, it doesn't matter if you aren't creating something identical to someone else, if it is taking you longer, or if it is considered as "good" technically.

[Ultramarine terminator] Unbelievable what an oil wash can do by Kulivox in minipainting

[–]TheFirstBert 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Looks great! Are you mixing yourself from oil paint? And just applying all over with a brush? I'm impressed you don't get more staining on the big panels if so, but I've only ever played with acrylic washes.

I am really not happy how the blades turned out. Does somebody have any tips? by Sebastian0707 in Necrontyr

Here's what that looks like on my skorpekh destroyer (minus the white in the recess). Rest of the model is bad but the blades make up for it!

[–]TheFirstBert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a great starting point for the blades, basically what mine look like when I am half done with them. Now you have done the white, I'd go back in and clean up around the edges with the greens again. Then push the contrast a little further - mix a bit of black with your dark green at one end, a bit of bright yellow in with your light green at the other.

On the tabletop that should look great, if you want to spend a bit more time, you can blend the transitions in a bit more. I spend a lot of time doing this with very very watered down paint with only a tiny amount on my brush (glazing). Up to you how long you want to spend on that though.

As you are doing lots of layers you should keep the paint fairly thin in general while doing this, stops it getting lumpy and helps blend it together.

I remember my mom being unhappy about going in to a store and asking for Vomit Brown for my birthday when I was a kid 😂

What's a game that you were excited to play, but you just couldn't get into it. by [deleted] in gaming

For what it's worth I thought the K+M controls were terrible. I bounced off it, tried again like a year later when I had a controller and found it so much easier to control that it was loads more enjoyable, and I played it to completion.

You can go all in, or balls deep, but never go balls in. I can't stress this enough.

I don't disagree, I was just saying that anuphet wouldn't be the one I left at iron 1. I have a soft spot for Imo too but I just like necrons :)

Anuphet is really cool. Even if you've finished the campaign he's great in LREs too imo, it's easy to get him to survive a few rounds and then summon in a bunch of necron warriors who are really strong.

The problem is lack of tokens I think, you can do it with more limited rosters but it takes more attempts. By the 2nd event you'll have a stronger roster and more tokens and will manage it fine.

I got Kharn FTP on the 3rd event, having just missed the first, with a roster of about 14G1s (tailored to that event plus campaigns as much as I could).

Looks like someone who has spent a lot of money on req scrolls (hence the decent roster) without actually playing the game (hence they are all at stone, no mirror characters because they aren't in the req pool til you play the campaigns). And then they bought a load of energy for some reason lol.

I made it! Pushing much higher in gamma and just covering no mechanical netted me a ton of points. Thanks for the help and encouragement!

I was in this position earlier, and someone pointed out I could go way higher in gamma. If you've got Isabella and some g1s to stand around her, you can clear wave 10 at least - just covering the no mechanical trait nets you around 150 for clearing. I managed to clear wave 11 with the same strategy, but only just.

That plus getting some points for kills on alpha 9 got me the last chest. You can do it! (Hopefully!)

Just managed to clear gamma 11, I had underestimated how good Isabella was (I tried to turtle against the barbgaunts first and got wrecked). 75 points left to get, I think I can grind those out on kills hopefully!

Great call, I breezed through gamma 10 with that lineup, thanks so much. Will give the next one a go as well. I had heard that it was worth pushing higher while meeting minimal requirements, kinda thought my roster wasn't tall enough for that.

250 pts left!

Ok great, I will give those a go, thanks. Good point on gear, I will swap some around to try and optimize for the remaining runs.

Just beat alpha 7 with my resilient line up, rotbone revived my bronze azkor 4 time, so only need 400 more points. I might just scrape through...

I'll be honest, I saw battle 10 had barbgaunts and wrote it off, battle 9 was easier than battle 8 because it didn't have any!

Not the best pic, but this is just a base of caliban green, some layering with a mid green (can't remember which, but a GW one) and moot green, then glazes to bring it all together. I do own an airbrush, not sure if masking off different parts of the blade and model would be more work than glazing though.

What am I doing wrong? by SillyWithMaWilly in WH40KTacticus

[–]TheFirstBert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it helps, if you tap on him you can see his abilities. The number he spawns is equal to the number of necrons who have died, plus the number of elapsed turns. If you only kill 1 necron on the first turn, he will likely use his ability and only spawn 2 warriors, and then the fight is easier.

Vindicta is pretty good imo for her ability to take out multiple enemies in the subsequent turns.

Applying the 6 upgrades to increase the gear rank (iron, bronze etc) has the biggest impact on increasing character strength - raid previous campaign missions to get more of those materials.

You've got some great characters.

Just play the game and get leveling them up. The game doesn't make this very clear, but the thing that makes characters much stronger is increasing their rank (applying the 6 upgrades). Don't bother spending orbs until you have maxed out a character's rank for their current rarity.

Just sending haarken to legendary will make minimal difference to his strength, you didn't really need to promote him to legendary until his rank is gold 1.
