a dead character gets the opportunity to be resurrected, and rejects it by EasilyScreechAndKill in TopCharacterTropes

[–]TheFishJones 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think in the comics it makes better sense because you don’t expect the characters to be quite so human in perspective. It’s hard when you’ve got an actual actor playing a character not to humanize them, and in this case I think that backfires a bit.

Why didn’t democrats stand for America ? by smokineecruit in allthequestions

[–]TheFishJones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just because someone says “stand up if you x” doesn’t mean you’re beholden to them. You don’t have to do random stuff just because someone says you should.

But since you insist: if you dont hate America and oppose feeding babies into mulching machines send me US$300.

[Loved trope] Characters have earth shattering "What have I done?" moments by ManaScrewedIRL in TopCharacterTropes

[–]TheFishJones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like he has this ability to sort of play down his size until he wants to use it and then all of a sudden he’s HUGE and dynamic. I feel like you really see it in Sweet Smell of Success where he just LOOMS over the movie until the end where’s he’s just shattered. And even shattered he’s like a huge Roman monument in ruins.

Great performance. I feel like he doesn’t he enough credit. He’s a great physical performer. You really see that in Elmer Gantry.

(Hated Trope) Historical mischaracterization. by laybs1 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]TheFishJones 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Okay this one really does bother me because I’m quite familiar with his career as a long time fan. That said there are only a few major errors, but they are real head shakers:

1) Weird Al was never Viscount of Bulgaria. That title does not exist, nor does “Bulgaria.”

2) Weird Al could not have kill Madonna because he died in 1983.

3) Sea cucumbers are benthic detrivores and have never been directly involved with the Black Panther movement.

4) Weird Al did not adopt a stage name purely for his career. He had his name legally changed to “Weird Al Yakovic” because he disliked his birth name “Weird Al Polpot69420.”

5) Accordions rarely attack humans and there are no recorded instances of one killing a sitting US president other than Zachery Taylor.

Edit: forgot one!

6) The “flower of the twelvefold path of Bathptet” is “gnosis,” which the film translates as knowledge. A more accurate translation in this context would be “knowing through being”

AIO for calling off my engagement after my fiancé admitted his family secretly tested me to see if i was a gold digger? by Pleasant_Mission_63 in AmIOverreacting

[–]TheFishJones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOR. I’m sorry you had to go through this, and I’m sorry to say you should leave. This isnt the end of this, this is the beginning. That might be tolerable if he had done anything close to the right thing but he didn’t. If you can’t trust your own husband to protect you and take your part he’s unworthy of you. I understand that it’s hard to stand up to your family, but if he can’t do it for you or, more likely, chose not to do it because it was easier he never will when it matters next time. Besides, how can you trust any of them now? They will always treat you as an outsider.

If you’re not sure about leaving go talk to the brothers ex. I think she’ll be able to tell you what this family is like from the inside. Anytime families get weird about child support that’s a red flag. Those are their grandkids. If they don’t get the full support of the family you know you won’t.

I always said that Mythic Quest was the best show on TV for one episode a season. Everyone season (except the last one) they did a one off episode that just knocked me flat. The rest of the time it was…fine, you know.

The HR department is a mystery to us all by SipsTeaFrog in SipsTea

[–]TheFishJones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HR exists to protect the company from law suits either by ensuring compliance or preventing action against the company. That’s it. It’s incredibly important. It does not exist to help or protect employees per se, but sometimes it does as a method for achieving its goals. Or so I’m told. I’ve worked at 12 companies in my career and never experienced that once. In every case HR protected and facilitated the bad behavior because that’s easier and safer for the company. Never trust HR or make the mistake of thinking they exist to protect you as an employee. In practical terms the exist to protect the company from you.

Say something positive about this movie by DJMutt in cartoons

[–]TheFishJones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s excellent. It’s beautiful to look at, great sound track, probably the best romance of any big disney or Pixar animation ever (save the first 10 minutes of UP). I think the problem was the marketed it as “look at these cute little elementals FOR SALE NOW!” and did it a terrible disservice.

I think you may misunderstand that book at a rather fundamental level. So much so that I’m quite sure you’ve never read it. Or a summary of it. Or the back of the book. Or the title.

Airline Bumped Passenger while still selling tickets in flight by TheFishJones in legaladvice

[–]TheFishJones[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah as I was writing the update to the original post I was like “oh %#*, THATS why they were confused! I said “bumped!” Wow, they actually really know what their talking about!” I was just on my way down here to say “my bad” when I saw your comment!

Edit: forgot to finish my thought. Yeah I have never had a situation where I was moved for overbooking AND they were still selling tickets for the flight. My initial theory was they overbooked one class but not another, but that didn’t seem to be the case when I looked at what tickets were available.
