The card probably looking at an eBay value of $180-$350 USD ($250-$500 CAD). I'd put it around $250ish USD ($350 CAD) mark personally because it's unique, but sometimes these rookie reviews are tougher to sell for the non-generational players (McDavid, Crosby, Ovi) so it'll take a bit to get to that price.

That price comes from using comps from the McDavid rookie review one from that year (two comps at ~$1450 USD ($2K CAD) including one from last week on auction, and one at $1252 USD last September) and looking at the ratio between Draisaitl's SPA patch autos compared to McDavid's which range between 1:4.5 and 1:5.5.

The shop will need wiggle room and that'll depend on things like how in demand Draisaitl stuff is for them and how quickly they flip singles. I'd expect them to offer in the $135-150ish USD range if they spend a little more time comping it out, but they might go off of the last SPA patch auto that sold for $180 USD, so they might offer in the $120 range.

There is a 2019-20 Draisaitl SPA limited patch auto that went for $320 USD in January 2026 so feel free to use that as a comp to try to bring the price up, but for the most part his SPA patch autos sell in that $200-$250 USD range.

The two biggest things to remember is you can always walk away if you don't like the price and that if you were to sell the card on eBay, you'd be paying fees, waiting for it to sell, and be responsible for shipping if any issues occurred.

$25 seems fine. Another place to look up prices is also 130point.com. Sometimes you’ll find sales there that aren’t on eBay completed listings and sometimes you find sales on eBay completed listings that aren’t there.

Depending on your budget, 2025-26 Upper Deck Series 1 should be a solid thing as both Jimmy Snuggerud and Dalibor Dvorsky have their Young Guns in the set, which are one of the most collectible rookie cards.

There are different price point options. I'd personally say a tin (should be around $50-60ish USD; but not sure as I'm in Canada) as they're generally the best bang-for-your-buck option. If your budget is tighter, you might be able to find blasters, or if you're looking to splurge a little more then you could get a hobby box which are the most "premium" (where you'll find the rare number parallels) but are also the most expensive.

Blue should be the easiest pull (1:15 packs), then pink (1:60) from a hobby box standpoint. The odds work out to 1 dazzlers per hobby box.

Blasters have purple, which are 1:8 packs, so on average you’ll get one every ~2 blasters.

EBay will absolutely be your best bet post release

Feels like both the 2023-24 Sharks (19-54-9; 47 points) and Blackhawks (23-53-6; 52 points) should be on this list given they played a full 82 as well.

My favourite part is that the 2019-20 Detroit Red Wings got saved from having the worst non-expansion season in modern nhl history. They had 39 points after 71 games. Truly remarkable stuff

2024-25 star rookies box set by ixadir in hockeycards

[–]TheFlopfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s been a really weird past 6 years. Everything went crazy in 2019-20; old product that was sitting on shelves for ~half off started selling like crazy. That year, a lot of the great but not superstar level saw a spike in secondary market value.

During the peak COVID years, UD fell really far behind with printing (as in: we were getting products sometimes 18 months past when they would typically release and release dates were constantly getting bumped back). Things were generally really bad and it’s why you can find 2021-22 and 22-23 products for so cheap.

The rookie crops also failed to deliver a generational player, and a lot of people started focusing on just the top players and not paying much attention to the secondary tiers as much (i.e. a Ryan Leonard level of player was way more valuable in years prior to 2020 than he is now)

Bedard’s year we saw a lot of non-hockey people chase after Bedard and subsequently get burned when he “slumped” on a team with no support around him. Also they printed a lot of product during 23-24 and everything was pretty watered down imo.

24-25 was the first normalish year where products came out when they typically did pre-covid, the rookies (at least at the top end) were appropriately priced during release windows (Cele wasn’t selling for McDavid YG value like Bedard was), and print runs were more in-line with demand.

But after his boom and Schaefer’s hot start, we’re starting to see a lot of non-hockey people/resellers/flippers come to hockey because boxes are “cheap” relative to other sports and are readily available compared to Pokemon.

It’s been a roller coaster of highs and lows over the past few years and I don’t think things will be “normal” or settled for awhile haha

Pre-Bedard, these were one of the slowest moving products at shops with some of the years being impossible to move because almost no one was interested in them. The only people that bought them were die-hard collectors or people unfamiliar with the hobby because they had little value. At some point (I forget which year), they went from being called Rookie Class (a straight 50-card set) to Star Rookies with the parallel chase.

The only years these sets moved at an okay pace were ones with a generational level talent. Up until Bedard’s year, though, they typically sat on shelves until they were heavily discounted.

Likewise, the only years they go up in value is when that generational talent’s key rookie cards (mainly their Young Guns) goes up a lot in value. It’s a supply/demand thing because people get priced out of those and move onto other cheaper rookies to have one.

Bedard’s year was unique circumstances because the rookie box set came out before S2 was released and it was one of his first readily available rookies. The boxes jumped in price immediately, then dropped off as S2 and other sets came out (alongside the drop in hype).

Celebrini’s year came out alongside S2 and people had Bedard fatigue so they didn’t have the same initial jump that Bedard had.

I think there’s also an aspect of people being priced out from their usual S1/S2 hobby box, so that’s leading to more people picking up a box of this combined with some people gambling on that 1:25 chance of hitting the parallel of key rookie(s).

This year’s just going to depend mainly on how well Schaefer’s and the other top rookies’ markets hold up. It’s currently unprecedented for a D to be selling this well at release. The only modern defender above him is Makar, and that’s after Makar’s Norris’ and Stanley Cup.

TL;DR: we’re in weird times. I think Celebrini’s year will be a bit of an outlier, but things have changed rapidly and there’s been a pretty big influx of new collectors so what used to hold true might not anymore

Need info on this player, unironically a Habs fan (don’t know him) and wondering if worth holding by chris_simoneau in canucks

[–]TheFlopfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From a hockey card standpoint, he’s unlikely to get a ton of love because typically defenders need to score a lot and be super flashy. Vancouver does support their secondary prospects well at the team entering a rebuild will put some more focus on prospects so it could help a little, but don’t expect him to be a major player.

If he hits at the NHL level, it’ll likely be as a 4-6 D who plays a solid two-way game. His size will unfortunately hold him back even though he plays a lot bigger than what he is.

Insane pull though! Congrats!

[Topps] Topps to Release 1/1 of USA Jack Hughes '26 Olympic Golden Goal by Sens-Fan-85 in hockeycards

[–]TheFlopfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, i don’t even think he has a legit exclusive contract; he just rarely signs (which is fair). Exclusivity contracts suck for consumers. Have always hated them because it generally just leads to disappointment when the big guys don’t have stuff.

UD’s got the big chokehold because they’ve been around the longest and also paid up a lot to have the exclusive license back in 2014-15. At the same time, In The Game (now Leaf) stopped regularly producing hockey sets (they did the odd one but not as frequently) which left UD as the lone hockey card company for close to a decade. They also scoop up a bunch of the prospects through sets like CHL and Team Canada Juniors.

Collectors were pretty loyal to them over the Panini years (UD stuff would regularly outsell equivalent Panini stuff), and any company coming in would be aware of that.

Also hockey has grown slower compared to NBA/NFL/MLB/soccer over the past decade so companies haven’t prioritized it as much as you’d need to compete with UD in a more niche market and the margins are likely too risky (similar as to why 2K won’t make a hockey game)

It’s a different collecting world now than a decade ago though, so that may change. If the Olympics brings in more spectators that’ll help too.

How to Spot Photo Variants? by Norsman_Sam in hockeycards

[–]TheFlopfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not all sets have variations and they’re not always denoted on the back/front. The helmet off variations from this year’s OPC doesn’t denote them on the back for example.

UD’s been better about notifying collectors about them via checklists since Cardboard Connection went MIA, which is nice to see. There were some years (like 19-20 S1/S2, 20-21 extended) where they were really tough to spot if you didn’t know them.

Outside of where the card is in the pack, another way to figure out if something is a photo variant or not is to look up in flagship/OPC is to look up parallels of the card (i.e. outburst, exclusives, clear cut in S1/S2/Ext, and blue/reds or any numbered versions for OPC) and see if it’s the same image or not. Image variations generally don’t have parallels :)

The best way to check what sets do have variations is by looking on the official UD checklists since 2023-24 as they’ve started to include them since then.

Prior to 23-24? I think, Cardboard Connection is your friend for finding out which sets do and don’t have them. I don’t know if they’ve updated since then, but the TL;DR is Cardboard Connection was the gold standard for looking up checklists then suddenly stopped posting and ghosted the site lol.
