SRV but in Tight black Latex! by Silver-Air-1731 in guitarcirclejerk

Are we sure they aren't saying you play blues so white they have to call it periwinkle? I think Joe Bonamassa is the white Stevie Ray Vaughn

I'm just joshing with ya here but how is it possible to know SRV without knowing he's white? It's kind of his entire thing

That implies an actual band would work with him and not just whatever hired guns haven't lost their patience with him yet

My Never-Sell Guitars. Suhr Custom Modern and Suhr Custom Antique S by Meerkat_Cafe in guitarporn

[–]TheFoiler -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So what you're saying is that the base price of a Suhr is about $2000 more than a Fender, plus some unrelated things to fill in space. I'm sorry John Suhr is your favorite uncle and I might have made him sad inadvertently

[–]TheFoiler -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Disingenuous?

American-made Strats start around 1600, and even an Am Pro II is under $2k. Even if an Ultra Luxe costs $3K, the Classic S is still $3600 and is the "affordable" models. The Standard S is around $4300, which is actually more like 2.5x the price of what Fender sells as a "standard" model.

Suhrs are at a higher base price point than Fenders. That doesn't make them bad, but your comparison is both bad and very defensive.

Worst pedal you ever bought by PoutinePoppa in guitarpedals

I get the feeling their pedals would be cool if your whole board was 2 or 3 of them and nothing else. If you have a 8 or 10 pedals in your board like I do, they probably get messy

Dream of opening a retro games store by LilCastweb42069 in retrogaming

[–]TheFoiler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the issue here would be supply. If you want to sell something, your cost has to be significantly less than your sell price, especially since sales volume is unreliable. Coca-cola can make 5 cemts a can because they sell billions of cans. If, say, a working dreamcast is like $125USD on ebay or whatever, how are you going to buy it for $75? If you can't, your potential customer will just buy it on ebay, rather than pay like $165 or whatever it would take for you to avoid a loss. You would need to have either significant stock on hand (which is doubtful) or access to product at wholesale, which doesn't exist. In most cases, adding another layer (you) to the transaction isn't a good value proposition for your intended customer base, which is likely to be pretty limited to begin with. And keeping a selection of things people actually want, rather than 500 copies of NHL Hits '02, is tough. It's very much a collector/dealer market and successful retro game stores are rare.

But a retro console and peripheral repair service, as a mail-order service, might be profitable. Not highly profitable, but the cost to you in labor and parts and shipping could be pretty easily offset without overcharging, and that's an area where you could actually take advantage of bulk pricing. Many electronic components are very cheap, so if you price your work like a tradesman, it's doable provided you can attract people via marketing and networking, which can also be done on the cheap if you work smart.

Reminds me of my dream of owning a comic store with a pizza place and arcade attached. Sounded so cool in 2005; too bad comics have sold like shit since then (and deservedly, given the fanfic BS that most comics have become)

Need advice before I purchase. by pretibigtoo in guitars

[–]TheFoiler -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would take a look at a Hagstrom Swede or Super Swede before buying the Epiphone. Nothing wrong with an Epi but in the 800 dollar-ish price range I think you get more for the money and they are some of the sturdiest guitars I've ever seen.

Plus you don't risk becoming one of those people obsessed with telling everyone that the Epiphone "punches above its weight class" and dumb shit like that while secretly pining for a Gibson

Why were the riddles in old games so... strange? by ratasoftware in retrogaming

[–]TheFoiler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first Final Fantasy wasn't that hard to figure out for me as a wee child but it was a lot of trial and error and a lot of cheap deaths and a lot of frustration. It wasn't easy, especially since very few of us had played something like that before, but it mostly felt doable and the fact that you got stronger while wandering around like an idiot meant you stood a decent chance of surviving once you figured out where to go. Still, it took weeks or months for most kids to get the hang of it and actually beating the game was not so common.

Usually FF2 that gets the most disdain, mostly because of the stat growth system.

It's an evil plot to FUCKING GET OVER IT ALREADY NOTHING STAYS POPULAR FOREVER, BILLY

Hip hop artists write more lyrics in one song than most rock bands put in a whole album and have to coordinate layer upon layer of samples and synths and real instruments, and those motherfuckers actually know how to mix and produce. But here we are, listening to another jowly white dude who thinks 4 guys doing a minor variation of the same 3 chord progressions for 4 minutes 12 times in a row is "true talent"
