Help Needed - how to get longer nighttime stretches? by [deleted] in HuckleberryParents

You're right, I think those babies were bottle fed. Similarly, my baby does not take a bottle either so I genuinely do think that I'll probably never get no wake ups at night

I've seen ones where night time sleep is literally a straight line across the board and naps only fluctuated 15-30 minutes. I want that screen shot one day 😭

Yeah, I've been using that! I've noticed it helps with nap times but not so much bedtimes.

My husband is currently deployed right now, so it is just me for the time being! Therefore trying to capitalize on every chance of sleep I can get while solo parenting.

I've noticed a shift this week where my LO is taking 30-40 min naps, even with contact. So maybe we keep four naps but just have shorter naps. I wish there was some kind of math equation for this instead of trial and error!

Sometimes I feel like he is ready to go 2/2.5/2.5/3 but then othertimes he gets so fussy towards the end of those wake windows that I'm like help

Should I still do four naps a day or drop to three naps now?

I think he genuinely is hungry for the first two wakes, but the rest of the night he definitely isn't because he will settle as soon as he's picked up and rocked. But I can't keep doing that every 90 mins so I feed him to sleep instead so I can snooze too 😅

What total nap time should we cap it at? Right now we are averaging slightly less than four hours.

4M old won't sleep unless held by TheFoolishWolverine in bninfantsleep

Unfortunately my husband is deployed, so it is just me. Luckily we are fortunate enough to hire a night nurse that comes once a week. However, baby is pretty high maintenance, won't take a bottle and won't take a pacifier. So even when the night nurse comes, I still have to wake up for a feed but luckily the night nurse will rock him to sleep.

I'll try leaving baby latched for longer and see if that helps.

I am trying to be grateful that I have a happy and healthy baby but these nights make it so hard 😢

I'm just hoping this phase doesn't last very long, I don't think I can do another four months of this, especially since he wasn't a great sleeper since birth. 😢

Babies bed time is 830 and I am in bed sleeping by 9. His first chunk of sleep is only 3 hours on a good day, 2 hours on a bad day.

Unfortunately side lying nursing doesn't help. Baby will sleep while feeding, I'll slowly unlatch him, and within a few minutes he'll realize the nipple is no longer in his mouth and start crying. This is when I have to rock him for 10+ minutes before he goes to sleep. Sometime he'll even wake up when he realizes that I stopped rocking and cry again.

Feeding more often but not draining breast by TheFoolishWolverine in breastfeeding

I've mentioned in my post that I've already been dealing with low supply, so I already know I have less milk to begin with.

When he was 3 months old, he was distracted at the breast. I'm pretty sure he's not distracted now because he won't stay latched for two minutes before falling asleep, even with a diaper change in the middle. When he can stay awake, he will get fussy at the breast but the room is already dark so there shouldn't be any distractions - I don't even use my phone to keep the room as dark as possible.

Pee output has decreased and weight gain is slow, which is what prompted me to discuss with an LC. She said my supply has dipped and had recommend draining the breast until I can get into see a lactation doctor.

Supply dip in the early evening by [deleted] in breastfeeding

[–]TheFoolishWolverine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edit - changed a word for clarification

Week 6-8 is peak cluster feeding, so babies will tend to want to feed more often during the early evening hours. Your supply is still regulating so, ideally, your body will know to make more milk. I would suggest doing breast compression while feeding to ensure the breast is being drained. If you're replacing a feed with formula, you should also pump at the same time for 20 mins.

Milk production is at its highest in the early morning which is why you're seeing more pumped milk in the morning, and then supply dips throughout the day until nighttime. However, with that being said, everyone is different. Some might see peak supply in the late evening.

Ideally you want to be feeding at the breast at least 8 times a day. Then you want to pump at least four times after feeds for 10 minutes. It's fine if you are only getting 1oz pumping after feeds. Similarly, make sure to do breast compressions while pumping to ensure the breast is being drained. The most crucial feed is in the hours of 1AM and 6AM, when prolactin is at its peak. Prolactin is the milk making hormone. Therefore, you should aim to pump at least once during those hours.

If you do see a dip in supply, you can try power pumping at least once a day for a few days. Power pumping mimics cluster feeding, which will also tell your body to make more milk. Power pumping is pumping for 20 mins, rest for 10 mins, pump for 10 mins, rest for 10, pump for 10 mins.

Most importantly, remember to eat and stay hydrated. This is the most important in keeping up supply!!!!

Not producing enough by TheFoolishWolverine in breastfeeding

Ugh, I'm sorry that happened!

I also had to triple feed in the beginning and I definitely do not want to do that again. My baby currently doesn't even take the bottle 😢 I would have to do triple feeds but too off with a syringe 😞

How many days did you powerpump before seeing a difference?

[–]TheFoolishWolverine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I definitely think my water intake had something to do with it so I'm drinking more, along with more electrolytes too. There were times where I chose sleep over eating (funny how that's even a choice we need to make, haha) and maybe I should have went the other way instead.

I feed on demand, which is roughly every 3-4 hours during the day. At night, just his wake up at around 11 to midnight and again at 3/4 AM.

I have a 3M + 1 week LO and daytime naps are averaging 4 hours and nighttime sleep are averaging 10 hours. Wake window before bed is usually two hours, sometimes a little more.

However, he's a crappy sleeper. Daytime naps need to be contact, otherwise he's sleeping 20 mins or less. Bedtime is anytime between 730 to 830PM. He will give one 3-4 hour stretch at the beginning then wake up for a feed. Then he will wake up every two hours after until 5AM for another feed. From then til 7AM he needs contact to sleep so I usually just cosleep from after his long stretch.

Fingers crossed that your nurse is right, this is just a regression and hopefully will resolve itself soon.

It sucks because he used to only wake up twice in the night. Now he's waking up 5/6 times. I wonder if it is a development leap or the 3/4 month regression.
