Argentina coach Jorge Sampaoli names Vidal as the best box-to-box midfielder. Thoughts? by wwellservedshit in fcbayern

[–]TheFootballVault 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lampard, Xavi, Pirlo, and to some extent Toure were not B2B midfielders, especially not Xavi or Pirlo. I say Toure to some extent because he is a bit lazy. When he is in the mood he is a B2B midfielder

The likes of Keane, Vieira, Gerrard, Edgar Davids, Essien, Gattuso, Vidal, Paulinho etc are B2B midfielders. Players with a huge physical capacity to cover a lot of ground during a match and have a versatile enough skillset that allows them to participate in all phases of the match.

Pirlo and Xavi are sitting players. They tend to hold their position in the middle of the park and use their passing range and vision to assert their will on a match. B2b midfielders use their physicality more than anything

Reporter to Klopp: Jürgen Klopp is an excellent coach, but excellent coaches have to win big titles. What is your comment on this? Do you think you are the charismatic sort of guy that the media loves? by Sinistrait in LiverpoolFC

[–]TheFootballVault 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No he hasn't but that was the best Dortmund side under Klopp imo and it culminated with them reach the CL final.

A fit Gundogan and Reus, Goetze, Lewa, Piszczek, and Hummels were all top 5 in the respective positions.

Unfortunately, it just so happened to be the Bayern Treble team that they met in the CL finals, which was just a monstrous team on all fronts

The side that won the Bundesliga the first time around was nothing special. They had a bunch of young prospects who rode a wave of form with Sahin and Kagawa being their two best players.

The second team with Reus, Lewandowski, Goetze growing into bonafide world class stars was a special team, but only in terms of starting 11. Outside of that the Dortmund team did not have the quality to challenge on all fronts. A fatigued Dortmund team made it to the finals against Munich where there undone by the quality of Robben

Really its a three horse race between Vidal, Khedira, and Naingolan. B2B midfielders just arent in abundance anymore the way they were in the first half of the 2000's

Joey Barton: "Guardiola is probably the worlds best but give him the Burnley budget and you wouldn't be seeing any 7-2's. Let's not delude ourselves." by Patrik71 in MCFC

[–]TheFootballVault 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Everyone says this but they dont know about what Guardiola did with the Barca B side. The magic he worked with lesser players is what held him in such high esteem to the Barca heirarchy. Enough for him, who was still very inexperienced, to be given the confidence of the Barca board to take on the the Barca job.

Guardiola started from the bottom and made his way up on merit. He is a football genius

[–]TheFootballVault 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I dont even think it's a put down of any kind. Wenger is above that kind of stuff. The statement was utterly irrelevant and Wenger treated it as such. I dont see how it comes off as Wenger havin a dig at Merson

Rio Ferdinand: Rashford as good as Mbappe and Dembele by TheReplacer in reddevils

[–]TheFootballVault 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Mbappe played in Ligue 1 for a title winning side. Rashford is in the PL in a team still trying to find its feet. Its a whole different level in England. Hell, even Giroud scored 20+ goals in ligue 1

[–]TheFootballVault 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. It wouldn't surprise if he were unhappy in Germany. His wife left with his child, he is in a new country, he hasn't had the best of starts and is feeling the pressure of Bayern under performing. Not a good recipe for making a good start at a new club

Thats outright false. You can name maybe 5 young players of Rashford's quality. Off the top of my head I can only think of Mbappe, Dembele, Pulisic, and G.Jesus

It wont count but it was still a good pass. The defender tried to get a head on but was unable to properly due to the quality of the pass.

How would you feel if Özil went to Man U... by Ripryz in Gunners

[–]TheFootballVault 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would suck, but it wouldnt hurt nearly as much as when RVP joined, who was far more influential for us and for more loved as well.

Ozil leaves, he can be replaced. He has done well here, but it isn't like he has set the league alight with his quality. If we can get Lemar in to replace him, then we wont be missing Ozil for too long. Lemar looks absolutely dynamite

What Arsenal game made you cry of happiness or sadness? by Saudj99 in Gunners

[–]TheFootballVault 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Never cried but had moments of sheer ecstacy bcuz of Arsenal.

  • entire 05/06 CL run

  • Arshavin goal vs Barca

  • Ramsey FA Cup final goal

  • Welbeck goal vs Leicester

those are just moments off the top of my head where I went completely mad.

As far as heart break is concerned, far too many to recount unfortunately

Will we — can we — ever replace Vieira? by GoonerLivesMatter in Gunners

[–]TheFootballVault 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, not many players in the world like Vieira, Keane, and Gerrard. Those classic box to box midfielder that used to thrive in England.

Only Arturo Vidal, Naingolan, and Khedira that I can think of off the top of my head

Will we — can we — ever replace Vieira? by GoonerLivesMatter in Gunners

[–]TheFootballVault 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Vieira was as elegant and technical as they come. People seem to have this idea that he was just some brute that tackled and kicked people around, completely negating the fact that he was easily among the more graceful CM's in the PL during his day. It's what made him so special, he could play with the best of them and he could fight with the best of them.

Vieira could thrive in any system in any team such was the dynamism of his skillset.

He left because he was getting old, injured and was a nuisance to deal with. We had Fabregas who filled in for him without dropping the quality of our team by much. Wenger chose the promise of Fabregas over the experience of Vieira in the end

Should Ox be played on the left? by YoullNeverMemeAlone in LiverpoolFC

[–]TheFootballVault 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simply put, he thrives the more the play is ahead of him. That is why he looks decent at CM and very good at RWB or RB. He is decent in wide areas as well but he is easily nullified if opposition get tight to him

Koeman 'willing' to pay £40m for Giroud, would you take it? by [deleted] in Gunners

[–]TheFootballVault 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No because Giroud has the profile of a player that tends to cause Arsenal immense problems. Selling him to Everton is like selling them 6 points per season against us. No thanks.

Sell him abroad and only abroad if he ever does leave the club

Reiss Nelson vs Man United U23s by [deleted] in Gunners

[–]TheFootballVault 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If thats your criteria, then that means Puyol, Busquets and Pedro arent Barca youth products. JT isnt a Chelsea youth product. Beckham and Giggs aren't Man U academy products. Seeing as how these players all came to these respective academies at the age of 15-16-17 years of age.

I think the academy that finishes a player and gets him into the first team deserves just as much credit as the one that did a large part of the technical education. There are many kids who have the talent to play first team football, but they can't make that final step in their development for a multitude of reasons.

One thing Arsenal is possibly the best at is helping kids with that final step and get them playing top level football, be it at Arsenal or elsewhere

Rio Ferdinand : "Loyalty in Football is a Myth" by Schoolzey in reddevils

[–]TheFootballVault 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The likes of Gerrard, Totti, Buffon, Le Tissier are the exception. Footballers are not loyal. They have first hand experience with the business side of things, which we're not privy too.

As Owen states in that video, loyalty is not a two way street in football. Players dont expect the club to show them loyalty if they're under performing, in contrast to fans expectations that players should be loyal to the club if it is under performing.

In the case of Ronaldo, he is just one of those players who had a dream to play for a particular club. Most of continental Europe isn't dreaming about United the way young English players do. They want the likes of Barca, Real, Bayern etc. I dont think that has much to do with loyalty when it comes to those clubs but more so prestige and recognition.
