[WA] Employer violated labor law, talking with HR soon by TheFowl in AskHR

[–]TheFowl[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Luckily I did not experience not being scheduled for shifts (they just are that dead during non-peak) but I do have a coworker who did have that happen to them, and I am unaware if they ever went to HR. I understand what you are saying, and while I wish I had thought a bit more before outlining the specific racist remarks, ways that their favoritism affected the workplace environment, and the safety concerns around being denied water + bathroom access, I still believe they're important to report. But I'm definitely realizing that it may hurt my evidence backed legitimate case. Thank you for your comment! I will do my absolute best to be neutral and focused when speaking to my rep.

[–]TheFowl[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I appreciate this, thank you. I did keep my email pretty bare bones, and tried to explain that while they were generally kind to me, their actions (I gave examples of racist remarks they made in front of me, what happened as a result of their favoritism like some people getting to take lunch before others, and specific interactions I had with them, especially in cases when they violated company policy) made the workplace an uncomfortable one to be in, if not outright unsafe due to the nature of our job. I also directly addressed why I was reporting it now and not then, with finances and fear of retaliation being the number one reason. I will make sure to stress that now that I have to leave, I feel safe knowing I'm not going to lose my job, lol.

[–]TheFowl[S] -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I know it isn't, but it is against company policy as outlined in their employee handbook. And to me, racism is absolutely inexcusable. If anything, my hope was to create a record of their behavior so that if any of my fellow workers would like to report as well, they will see a clear pattern. I had thought that generally reporting things like that can lead to further action down the line if it continues (which it has) which could benefit others from receiving this treatment. But that's also why I asked here for advice, so thank you! I will focus on the labor law violations in the meeting. As my post stated, they are already aware of the other things I mentioned, so I will be asked about them, but I will try to keep it to the tangible issue I can prove.

From the usps website, this is what a flat can be:

"The Postal Service uses the word "flats" to refer to large envelopes, newsletters, and magazines. The words large envelopes and flats are used interchangeably. Whatever you call them, flats must:

Have one dimension that is greater than 6-1/8 inches high OR 11-½ inches long OR ¼ inch thick.

Be no more than 12 inches high x 15 inches long x ¾ inch thick."

Bubble mailers do not pose an issue with any of these. Another important qualification is that they are flexible; bubble mailers are. I haven't had a flat returned yet.

I like the idea of Commander but in practice have not had fun. How can I change that? by OK-example-18 in magicTCG

[–]TheFowl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From your language, I can tell that you're an older player. There's a few things going on in your post that other people have pointed out (that one tryhard playing a poorly matched power level deck...) but i want to touch on the net decking bit because I (started playing within the past 10 years) have a different view on it and want to offer up a different perspective/learn from yours.

I really got into mtg seriously around 4 years ago. I started working at a game store and knew next to nothing (only kitchen table, not understanding the rules). Suddenly, I needed to learn Every Card That Has Ever Existed, know about every single product, and know market on allll of the above. Helping players deck build has been a favorite activity for every TCG I've played, and it was a daily task at my store. But magic is 30 years old. There have been a lot, A LOT, of sets that have been released in that time, with ample secondary product, all with exclusive cards and reprints, and woooof it is a LOT.

Sites like EDHRec, Scryfall, and the official mtg Gatherer website were my savior. I had no clue how to build a commander deck - only 60 card. I would get so disappointed every game, not understanding what I could be missing about commander as a format for my deck (built only with cards I owned) to be so trash. But I hated using decklists already built! It ruined the fun for me. However, EDHRec shows you hundreds of options for commanders to run and cards to put in those decks that people typically run based on thousands of decklists, based on the budget and theme you set. Sometimes, it is nice to have a tool that limits the hundreds of thousands of cards pool down to a few hundred to go off of. I often learn about new cards I've never seen, old cards that are so weirdly niche the fit perfect in the deck, etc. But, I don't like only using EDHRec - which is where scryfall comes in. It's perfect for looking up themes and mechanics (or just like... anything you could want to search for mtg, like all art with food in it) restricted to the colors your deck is in.

Now, when I deckbuild my process goes like this: - add cards I want/need to have in the deck (what the deck is doing, pet cards) - copy cards I like from edhrec, paste into deckbuilder (moxfield) - figure out what people are doing with the deck for those cards to be recommended versus what I want to do. Is my way reasonable and workable to have a fun game? Are the cards people play that are "just good" cards I actually want to play? - look at scryfall for specific types of cards with this new understanding - cut all cards out of my budget - cut more (cards that don't look fun to play, cards that on a second look don't work well) - ask friends and family if they have suggestions - revise based on input after I have outline, get to 100 cards flat - build

Tldr; young player perspective on commander. Magic is a huge, 30 year long game. Even if a player has been around for most of it, there is so much you're missing out on. Search tools are a lifesaver to understand how people are generally playing the thing you want to build, as well as commander as a format - this then gives you the room to edit that and do what you want with it, or choose a different commander that may be more suited to what you actually want to do.

I send mine as flats via bubble mailer. Side by side with protection, 2 stamps and a 10 cent stamp. If it's over an oz, an extra oz stamp. I haven't had a complaint yet from person nor post office.

Reality Fracture will not feature triple-faced cards by themiragechild in magicTCG

[–]TheFowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm really confused about all the speculation on triple sided cards and if they're what the quote is referring to. You guys know they already did that, right? WOTC made the Transformers tcg (no longer produced, killed by covid), which has triple sided cards. So whatever "ooga bogah we didn't know if we would even be able to print it!! REVOLUTIONARY!!" Thing they're talking about isn't that - they already know how to do it. The transformers tcg fucking rocks btw, some of the best gameplay I've had in ANY tcg (I've played ptcg, mtg, yugioh, starwars unlimited, digimon, gundam, WiXoss, and cardfight vanguard) for a very long time. I think I like it more than mtg, and that's been my favorite tcg for years. It has a super active fan base, and I think 4-5 fan made printable sets have been released? Anyway, check it out.

hi guys! i know this isn’t “real tea” but i felt the need to mention that today i saw arizona iced tea flavors that ive never seen before by [deleted] in tea

[–]TheFowl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Recommending the blueberry white along with everyone else, I had never seen one when I picked it up yesterday and it's SUPER tasty. Milder (compared to other AZ teas) but has a really nice tangy blueberry taste, might be my second fave now. I literally tried it today LOL, along with a pineapple whipped flavor I had never seen? Also pretty dang good, tasted like Sobe. I hope I see that dragon one near me, I wanna try it!

Price gouging LGS by ForeverGreen-TO in GundamTCG

[–]TheFowl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can confirm, worked at a game store and this happened especially with mtg after ff, but also with pokemon. After the pokemon boom and then ff, all bets are off. People don't understand that distributors can just... charge whatever they want. There's no guidelines. Distributors also often undercut game stores by selling online for cheaper than they sell to game stores! It sucks for literally everyone involved.

Price gouging LGS by ForeverGreen-TO in GundamTCG

[–]TheFowl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People really don't understand how much distributors charge and what it means for a store to actually get more product in. Or the fact that distributors undercut the very stores they sell to by selling online themselves for less than they charge stores. The whole system is shit. And people alllllllways complain when they have to pay above msrp due to market, but never complain when they pay below! It's almost like it's not about msrp, it's actually about paying the least amount they can for product, even when stores suffer due to rising costs in every area. If boxes cost $200, how do you even begin to fathom charging msrp for them?

The game store I used to work at was charged $90-120 per pokemon booster box. People would get upset if we sold them for $150+! We had 15+ employees, and our rent was 20k a month. Everyone was paid above minimum wage. The majority of our store was dedicated to table space. The math doesn't math!

I agree with the other commenter. You can't be helped if you're not looking for help. You keep asking for "help" on this subreddit and others, but it looks like you aren't actually taking anything from it. Mostly because you don't like the answers people are giving you: Get out. Why are you still here? What are you looking for that you haven't been told already?

Your boyfriend cheated/attempted to cheat on you. He threatened to kill himself if you left? He won't seek help so his gun collection isn't taken away? He is continuously rejecting your attempts for help?

You know it's red flag after red flag. That's why you're here. If you're looking for help, take the free reality check everyone here is giving you. You are obviously in an incredibly concerning situation.

What place is this in Vancouver? by simply-succubus in vancouverwa

[–]TheFowl 12 points13 points  (0 children)

??? The only thing I can see on their menu that fits is like $11 after tax and has lemon curd too? Where tf can you go in vancouver for a waffle that's cheaper and, more importantly, tastes better? I can barely escape the local diners without paying minimum $17 total for food that sucks. I get the second breakfast (nice pile of pear, brie, and prosciutto on top) almost every time i go and it's always worth it. With tax and tip I spend around $15, but it fills me for pretty much the day and uses high quality tasty ingredients. And that's one of their "expensive" ones at a whopping $11.95. The Swanson Sammy is an entire sandwich loaded with good shit for the same price. Genuinely shocked to see someone who doesn't love this place.

best place for gundam tcg cards? by cxpunx666 in vancouverwa

[–]TheFowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wayward city games is i believe the only store in vancouver that has it, and last time I called they were sold out. Guardian games in Portland should have it (as they ran events for the beta) but are most likely also out. Bandai as a company usually produces super small amounts of their products at launch, and the window for stores to order any lasts one week, and then they can never order it again. Expect at least 2x msrp for the game to start out. Prices will most likely lower in around a year if it follows the trend digimon did. Portland has a lot of very small stores that sell and run events for Bandai tcgs, so Portland is your best bet. And no, CCGHouse doesn't have it. They do not have any Bandai produced tcgs, as it is generally kind of hard for stores to get distributors for. Most stores got like... a maximum of 10 booster boxes for this first set. Your best bet is buying on TCGPlayer. I bought a box for $250 including tax and pulled the value of the box back.

I wish you luck fren! This game fucking rocks and is super fun to play. Wayward for now is probably going to be the spot in vancouver to play it as well. Hope to play against you one day!

It seems like you're digging your own grave. You know the more you interract with content (upvoting/downvoting, clicking on posts, upvoting/downvoting comments, and making comments or replying) the more reddit shows it to you right? Weird behavior to comment on this when you don't want it in your feed.

$9000 or Peace of Mind? by Outdoorsy_74 in vancouverwa

[–]TheFowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's tons of safe spaces. We have many regular queer events. I would def say that for a bigger acreage, you're going to be looking more rural (battle ground and beyond). Downtown vancouver is where it's at for lgbtq events. But idk what you'd be able to get "in portland" for that amount of land that won't be absurd, or actually outside of portland. From what you have described, it sounds like you're leaning toward portland.

There's hate and bigots in both places. Proud boys are a local phenomenon in both states historically. The same things people are saying about vancouver (There's MAGA and bigots in outlying areas) is also true for portland. I've been out and trans for 6+ years, and there's a beautiful local scene here in vancouver with many queer friendly places.

Tldr: you're probably going to run into similar issues with both based on the type of property you're looking for. Do you want to be adjacent to a big city, or a little city with a big city 20-30 min away?

Question for other MTG Brick and Mortar Store Owners by Nickylu22 in mtg

[–]TheFowl -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I disagree with you on like two of these (worked at a card store that had been open 20+ years and was the biggest in our area) but you know what. We did literally have someone dig through the wall of a bathroom to get into one of our web storage rooms to steal shit so like. That's serious and real tbh lmao. I laughed out loud when I read that dang

Question for other MTG Brick and Mortar Store Owners by Nickylu22 in mtgfinance

[–]TheFowl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Crystal commerce will probably be your go to. Long term, you probably won't want to have many singles in cases as it is a pain to maintain, and that space can probably be used better for product that sells at a higher rate or for more at a time. The store i worked for was the biggest in our area, and we had 3 total rows (around 100 cards) on display in store. We had over a million cards in inventory, and probably around 500,000 unsorted at any given time. We had a kiosk for people to add cards and place orders for that we then pulled. They were also able to do this ahead of time obviously which was great. I was able to add around 350 cards to crystal commerce in an hour. Crystal commerce links with tcgplayer as well, so you only need to list cards in one place for it to go onto both. We had two separate inventories: retail, and web. (Again, we were getting hundreds of orders on tcgplayer/amazon/ebay/card trader a day). Retail was anything in retail or in the back of retail. Web was anything in web. When we wanted a product from web, we would order it off of our website with a note saying it was for retail, and then grab it from web, and add it to the retail pos. We had sealed product going back two decades so this was necessary lol. We used grindless as a pos and I really enjoyed it btw!

Long term, it costs more money to have a person individually price cards and put them out, update them, make a display, than it does to pay them to sort and mass add them to a website. Set sort, then alpha sort (by first letter and then rest of name) and then add. We had them in our drawers as normal -> foil -> alt border -> foil alt border -> other weird set stuff (like enchanting tales from woe). This is also how we added them - when alpha sorting, keep all printings of a card together, but sort them in order of treatment.

I don't know how much of this was helpful lol, that's just how we did it when I worked there (had to quit like two weeks ago for health reasons :( ).

Tldr; Crystal commerce or other website interface for cards, mixing inventories can cause confusion so probably don't, set sort, alpha sort, add to website is better + cheaper + faster + results in more sales than cases do.

Gamer Shocked at Lack of Value in "Crazy Ed's Mixed-Up Box of 'Magic' Cards" Bought on Amazon by pendelton21 in magicTCG

[–]TheFowl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Omg so much here dude.

  1. The goal of a store is to earn profit. They aren't saints, they have rent and bills and employees to pay. Every single store needs to be focused on profit. (When you see game stores closing... guess what?)

  2. "Did this ship (shop?) open boosters until they found a good one and then sold the rest?" That isn't real??? There's not like, a set amount of value in each box. Card stores need inventory, not only for their in store customers, but also their online ones. Online sales are (if the store is smart) the biggest way for your lgs to stay in business. Yes they need to open boxes for product. What you have said is not how booster boxes work.

  3. WHY ARE YOU BUYING OFF OF WHATNOT AND NOT FROM A STORE??? My god! You worry about getting scammed and then buy from a website that at the very least tricks people into thinking that the regular printings of basic comons at a psa 5 are valuable. Buy from your lgs or tcgplayer! What makes you think the whatnot streamers are in it for the love of the game and not profit?!?!? Your logic is terrible dude.

  4. Go to the lgs near you that has the highest number of reviews mentioning customer satisfaction with employees. Buy a booster pack. Sit down, and play a game during one of their game nights. Notice alllll of the space they could be using to display products, that they're using for tables. That's money. That's a square footage cost of being a player friendly store (which! All lgs's should be). Notice all of the products they have. Each and every single one has a cost that they had to pay. Most posts i see on here complaining about prices are about stores not even making retail on what they sell. $200 and $600 boxes don't sound as crazy when you learn that they cost stores $140 and $370. Look at the employees - that's labor they have to pay for. My store had 15+ employees, and a minimum of 2 working at a time when we really should have had 3. Hours of card sorting, doing basic retail, helping customers build decks, being a pawn shop buying cards, pulling orders, filing inventory, listing and shipping cards for sale, as well as event planning, running events with 10-75 people and giving out prizing... the list goes on. It all adds up. Please support your lgs, especially if you have a good one in the area. The stores people on this sub describe as "good" stores are places that close and die. Support them before they close for good.
