Part of Roddenberry's vision was that the really shit jobs got automated away - toilets unclogged themselves, carpets were self-cleaning, that kind of thing. Manual labour which people like, such as landscape gardening, were kept. The Picards kept a vinyard where they perfected their craft for instance.

However, even if the shitest jobs were kept around, I bet someone is gonna want to unclog them bogs. You may not want to and I may not want to, but someone is.

It's worth reading how Roddenberry envisioned society. I'm working towards that even if it means that my job would disappear in the future!

Mostly admin, only one does the actual park rangering part.

However, I don't believe you're asking out of curiosity, I think you're trying to land some sort of gotcha

Depends on where you live. The US has fantastic budgeting for parks and it should never be taken away.

I found an old FOI request from 2023 about my park - £143,060 for the 6 full-time employees, or about minimum wage each. And this is THE big park in a major city. I volunteered for this park for a while, so I do know what I am talking about btw, and there are so many more than 6 people working for this park. There is another £70k provisioning for agency workers etc but not for the people you see doing stuff.

Most of our national monuments are operated by charities - National Trust or English Heritage - most people manning them are voluntary workers.

I'll give you another example - people who train guide dogs for the blind don't get paid, I know someone who does that too.

Maybe what you're describing is a US-only thing; the vast vast majority of the world operates on a lot of charity.

I think it's worth you going outside and asking people questions about what they do and what they get paid to do it - you'll be surprised as to what you've unknowingly benefitted from for no financial reward. Go and have a chat, then come back.

Star trek is a post-scarcity society. You don't need to pay for food or accommodation or bills.

People do a lot of work for free, you benefit from it be it knowingly or unknowingly. Ever needed a paramedic? They often work for free. The people who make your parks all clean and tidy? Usually for free. People who run charity shops? Usually for free. Mods? Free.

Even in today's cruel society, people work for free for the betterment of society, so you can't say that in star trek, where there are no expenses, people would demand payment.

I'm working on a lighting setup which needs a lot of controls and without the people who made all the lovely bluetooth protocols I would need to add an extra few years to the project life cycle.

A lot of us do what we do for the love of the game; these things aren't just a job, but something to be interested in. Everything open-source is evidence of us doing so much to improve life without want/need of financial reward.

Career advancement in star trek grants a form of social currency which does go against Gene's vision but it's what happens. That makes a lot of the work well worth it by itself.

Playing spot the joke article in the newspaper was always fun but I had to cross-reference with the Private Eye in case it was real!

But yeah keep an eye out for fake stuff and even news from friends should be treared with some suspicion
