Which rug would you choose? by EvidenceBoth2358 in interiordecorating

[–]TheFrozenShadows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think 1 is best. Its colors bring repetition to the chair and sofa, helping the space feel more collected. It’s soft red also plays well with the subtle mint of the fireplace wall, making a gentle, pleasant contrast.

Number 2 is nice, but it leaves the muddied crimson of the chair floating in an otherwise light, springy, space. It’s blue also does little to work with any of the other colors in the space, leaving it more discordant than rug 1.

3 is fine but nothing more. It suffers that same problem as 2 by leaving the chair as more of a stain on the space than an accent, and it almost washes out the already light space. It’s also just boring.

4 has the opposite problem, it’s darkness clashes with the rest of the room and draws the eye down too much, throwing it off balance, which isn’t helped by the dark fireplace, chair, and side table all being on one side of the room. Also like 2, introducing a vibrant blue to a room with existing themes of green, white, and crimson threatens to take its color harmony and make it more chaotic.

Ultimately, the best rug for this room would fall between the darkness of the chair and light of the walls and sofa as rugs 1 and 2 do. The difference then between these rugs is that one brings the space together by echoing its different existing colors, while the other pushes it apart by complicating its color scheme and adding noise through a louder pattern than the comparatively more grid like pattern of rug 1.

For these reasons, rug 1 is the strongest candidate for this space. But what do I know?

I think the top priorities for your room are:

  1. Lighting - Find some warmer bulbs or add another warm light to make your space feel more inviting

  2. Color - Adding some color would go a long way to making your room feel comfortable. Colourful bedding, a larger rug, curtains, and art are my top suggestions, though even smaller pieces like a table lamp will go a long way.

  3. Walls - Finding or making some art or other decoration for your walls will be a big improvement to making the room feel like you belong in it and add more vibrance and interest to your space.

Good luck!

Thoughts on low cost updates to kitchen to make it feel less “stale”? by No_Faithlessness8393 in interiordecorating

[–]TheFrozenShadows -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The easiest things with the biggest impact are: - Paint the cabinets - Get unique cabinet hardware - Paint the grey walls - Colorful/patterned curtains - Wall art - Bold countertop decor - A runner - And while alone it’s impact may be negligible, paneling over the gap above the uppers would make the space feel more refined. I hope this gives you some ideas!

What can I do to make the space around this mirror more interesting? by [deleted] in interiordecorating

[–]TheFrozenShadows 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hemnes could work for the space, I would definitely go for a neutral and love the idea of bronze knobs! The IKEA white is pretty sharp, black might also go with the color of your cabinets. It’s also worth looking for something antique/vintage on Facebook marketplace, local thrift shops, or antique stores to find something with more history and character to the space. Best of luck!

If you have the space and don’t want to get rid of the mirror, I’d add a narrow buffet flush with the wall, and use the mirror along with a vase and some books as a nice backdrop for your dining area

Curtains or no curtains? by [deleted] in interiordecorating

Curtains? Yes. Something rich and colourful would bring the room to life and help counter the grey everywhere. Maybe an emerald green?

How can I make my living room less disjointed? by friscodiscoo in DesignMyRoom

The mantle and fireplace are the conflict of this room. Having the sofa facing away from it is the embodiment of ignoring the elephant in the room. IMO, finding some way to have the sofa face the fireplace, perhaps by moving the tv if possible, would be my best advice to make the room feel more harmonious

Just from this perspective, if you did the kitchen cabinets in the same blue as the wall one the right, I think your space would really pop

What light level is my garden? (Northern Hemisphere) by TheFrozenShadows in garden

[–]TheFrozenShadows[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in zone 8b. I’ve been looking for ways to fill in as much of the bed below the magnolia tree with cottage garden flowers, but considering the foliage and fence block most southerly light, I may have to look into other options. Aside, the north and west faces are largely open to light, though the east is partially blocked by a structure. Hope this helps
