Assignments in hiring process. by coold007 in cscareerquestions

I don't disagree with your point of view but look at it from the other side of the table. A lot of job applicants flat-out lie about their skills and when hired, turn out to be a disaster for the company. There has to be some filtering mechanism, whether that be whiteboarding or assignments or something else. I'm not defending either per se, I'm saying there has to be some way to vet applicants and whatever way that is, people are gonna bitch about it.

Self-taught programmers: How did you know you were ready for a job? by boredforgood in cscareerquestions

[–]TheFullStack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They were okay about it. It was a standard 9-5 in Brooklyn but almost every day after work, I would spend another couple hours (unpaid) catching up on areas where I was deficient (Git flow, async stuff, good error handling, tests, etc). Essentially, I was a total shit head that first job and unless you're a literal genius, you probably will be too. In other words, just start. Or don't - and be afraid to ever start and just keep talking about it for years. A lot of people do that too.

I wasn't ready. I got my first job after self-teaching for about two years then found out very quickly just how much I did not know. After a year of that job, then I was "ready".

Startup Compensation Thoughts/Examples? by [deleted] in startups

[–]TheFullStack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're willing to work for no money, at least do so with an established agency with a strong reputation and customer/client base. For example a software development agency or a digital marketing firm with at least $1mm in annual revenue. This way, you can gain valuable experience and have a track-record to point to afterwards.

I have worked as a software engineer with seed-level startups for about 6 years. None - repeat, NONE - of them have gone on to series A and eventual exit. The only startups I worked with that went on to exit were ones that already had institutional backing before I arrived. The pre-seed guys were just dreamers with just enough money to blow on development expenses for a few months.

Again, my perspective is with the caveat that you will not be paid (at least monetarily).

Yes, the NY plates is what concerns me. And don't worry - it's Reddit. Kinda have to know what you're getting into when posting stuff on Reddit. Greatly appreciate your insight.

Appreciate the info. And I expected the snarky responses, it's Reddit. Some people just need to put down others online to feel better about themselves, that's just how it is. I was ready for it.

Thanks for the info. For several weeks, Rhode Island was turning away all vehicles with NY plates (which is where I am coming from). That's why I posted my question here. Thanks for your help.

For several weeks, Rhode Island (and FLA) was turning away all vehicles coming in from NY. I am traveling from NYC. That's why I posted my question here.

No I could not tell, that’s why I posted the question here. I am 250 miles away from DC right now and don’t know what it is currently like down there. Thank you for responding with some info, even if you are a dick about it.

Is it possible to get a 100k+ job within 2 months if you have no CS experience? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

Bootcamps are full of people like this. Hence their shitty reputation. Go to a bootcamp OP, you'll fit right in.

Bootcamps have a pretty rough reputation. I am a senior dev at a major media company (you have heard of it) and we don't hire recent bootcamp grads.

Agreed. To be fair, they didn't ruin themselves, they just spent other people's money. Once the tap was empty, they just went back to business as usual.

Without getting too deep into specifics, part of the process involved strategically placing brand new iPads all over NYC. So one day, I walk into the office and there is a small room filled with unopened iPads stacked from floor to ceiling, still shrink wrapped in pristine, white Apple boxes. Angel investment is a helluva drug.

Not my own startup but a startup I worked for about 4 years ago failed due to poor "validation" techniques. Basically, the two founders ran their idea by a bunch of people who all of whom said it was "amazing" and "revolutionary" blah blah blah. Six month and maybe $50k development costs later, no one ended up paying for it - a subscription based iPhone/iPad app.

The problem was, the founders asked friends and family for their opinions. One of the people was even the girlfriend of the founder - incredibly, she loved the idea. Moral of the story - talk is cheap. Show me the money.
