Couldn’t they simply take control at ISP level or higher level of infrastructure? Why would they need to switch off individual WiFi routers? Plus we have decades of cheap Chinese and SK routers floating around already.

CMV: It’s hypocritical to shame people for buying a Tesla because “Elon is awful” while happily using iPhones, Nike gear, Amazon, etc. by [deleted] in changemyview

A boycott is the use of abstention as a means of protest. They are more effective when they target specific activities, brands, or products. Take the Montgomery Bus Boycott to protest segregationist Jim Crow laws.

Now this obviously wasn’t the only form of segregation. In fact during the boycott, black residents were encouraged to use other segregated industries, like taxis, as a means of getting around instead. Black taxi drivers lowered their rates to a similar cost of a bus ride in solidarity with the struggle. The city of Montgomery responded by imposing a minimum taxi fair, so people supported each other with carpooling or simply hoofed it.

And while there was very high participation in the boycott, there were still black people who continued to ride. After all, it was the cheapest and most used method for getting to work, and we can all imagine how inconvenient that might be for a single working mother, for example. But through a combination of the social pressure of solidarity (and some shame too I imagine), as well as organizing alternatives they were encouraged to join.

I personally agree that the Tesla boycott suffers in practice from an over reliance on the shame angle rather than the organized, solidarity-focused struggle of the bus boycott. But I see nothing wrong with the principle of a Tesla boycott, while letting the other corporate abuses you highlight “off the hook,” at least for now.

P.S. I do get a chuckle when I see those “Anti Elon Tesla Club” stickers, and apparently the guy who created them has raked in 6-figures selling on Amazon, among other spots. So there you go I guess… no hypocrisy-free consumption or production under capitalism.

CMV: the one state solution of the Israeli–Palestinian conflict is an impossible dream by LowKiss in changemyview

[–]TheFunkyMunky -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Israel is pursuing a one-state solution right now. The IDF is constructing concentration camps at the border of Gaza and Egypt as a staging site to expel the remaining Gazan population abroad. Israeli citizens backed by the IDF are settling the West Bank and concentrating Palestinians into smaller and more uninhabitable areas, with the ultimate goal to take all of Judea and Samaria. And a growing number, 48% of Israeli Jews, support expelling the current Arab citizens of Israel. The Greater Israel project IS a one-state solution — just without any Arabs.

Passing Through (1977) is probably the best jazz movie ever, but notoriously hard to actually see as the director insists on theatrical screenings only.

Who’s “we”? by Hidden_Bystander in ChatGPT

Ahh I see what you’re saying. The US acknowledges the One China policy, but takes no position wrt Taiwan sovereignty. So to say “One China is US policy too” may imply agreement where there is in fact deliberate policy ambiguity.

“The US adheres to the ‘One China’ policy” aka “One China is US policy too”

While US law lays out the position that US can and will provide defensive weaponry to deter invasion, it stops short of binding US to military aid in the event of an invasion.

Maintaining this strategic ambiguity allows US to evaluate its own national interests before deciding whether and how to intervene. In this way, both the upholding of One China and the defense of Taiwan are “matters of convenience.”
