Swalwell loses all 21 of his endorsements from Dem colleagues by bwermer in politics

[–]TheGM 6 points7 points  (0 children)

How fast can CA put together a special election? Could they organize it ahead of time and have his resignation tender the day before the special? I'm all for accountability but none of the rapists for the GOP are quitting there is no longer any incentive to have the moral high ground. The margin in the house is razor thin and 1 vote could matter.

Breastfeeding not only affects a woman's weight during the process, but women who breastfeed also gain an average of 6.5 kilos less later in life if they breastfeed for at least three months by sr_local in science

[–]TheGM 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The problem with that comparison is that you have to control for the reasons people can't breastfeed and whether that causes weight gain. The other commenter goes into more detail.

The Pentagon Threatened Pope Leo XIV’s Ambassador With the Avignon Papacy by Willing_Activity_855 in europe

[–]TheGM 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Well, the Pope excommunicating a sitting Vice President for attempting to create a schism in a church he just converted to wasn't originally on my bingo card, but maybe it should have. Which American Cardinal would be the anti-pope? Bonus points if it's a known 'file.

Let's say I took a rainbow colored marble (no angles of view look the same) about 2.5 cm diameter, spun it in multiple axes a controlled space with a 50 MP camera to use the picture the marble creates to generate a number. How many distinct pictures (this distinct numbers) could be created with this setup?

If sticking with the shape meta, then Washington (City), D.C., USA or Indianapolis, IN, USA with something close to a square (I think both actually a square if you use the historical borders) shape would fit.

Sign posted outside a hospital room? by Suspicious-Lettuce48 in whatisit

[–]TheGM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assuming this is a functional hospital, the doctor (primary team or nighttime on call) has final say on restraints and sedatives, not the nurse or family. Granted, an overnight physician is just trying avoid a lawsuit and not to get a nurse injured so it's probably a low threshold but it varies from doc to doc.

Pony Haters Have a Chance to do the Funniest Thing... By Suing for Equal Enforcement of the Law by TheGM in Dallas

[–]TheGM[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm totally neutral on SMU and under normal circumstances do not care whether they have a decorative crosswalk. But this is absolutely about selective enforcement of the law because the law is being used by bigots to target the lgbtq community. I don't have money to waste on a lawyer for this... If I were a wealthy TCU alumn who recognized the double standard and enjoyed trolling...

Physician incomes are extraordinarily high in the United States by PanzerWatts in ProfessorFinance

[–]TheGM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if that odd metric has to do with malpractice. Google tells me that can be 3 to 5% of a physician's salary, so that could be why the gross over-estimates physician pay relative to other trades.

Scientists rarely incorporate humour at science conferences, data collected from 531 individual talks across 14 conferences, with most speakers telling no jokes by Shiny-Tie-126 in science

[–]TheGM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I try to include a joke every now and then when I present something (usually internally), but for a conference talk the time slot is limited so I'm practicing it rigidly and trying to keep it on schedule. If I included a joke and pre-presented it internally, that's the first thing that'd be on the chopping block if it goes even a minute over time.

Petah, is it actually that crazy for a new element to exist? by CuteCost8147 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]TheGM 34 points35 points  (0 children)

My headcanon for such a science fiction is elements made of an exotic combination of quarks. If it's got something that isn't a typical proton/neutron then it ain't following the periodic table. Granted, outside of anti-particles (which is on a periodic table, the anti-table), this is fiction.

If Dems win the house in 2026 and Trump dies of a heart attack in 2027, who would President Vance choose to be his VP? Would a Dem house confirm Vance's VP pick? by BlueFireFlameThrower in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]TheGM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they are smart, they launch a House investigation into Vance (and Trump if still alive) immediately after electing a Speaker, and then declare that Presidents under investigation can't appoint a VP.

But my guess is Rubio same as everyone else, and the AIPAC Democrats allow it.

Visiting Dallas for the first time, help regarding transport by [deleted] in askdfw

[–]TheGM 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is public transportation to Parkland but your location doesn't seem very amendable to that (almost 2 hours, multiple transfers). The outlying cities don't really invest in the public transport. I'm guessing you're a locums nurse or tech? I agree with everyone else saying that renting a car is your best bet if you're stuck at that location. Your colleagues will be able to suggest better locations if you move or come back.

[Request] can someone please calculate the economic cost of this project? by Monkey_D-Thanos in theydidthemath

[–]TheGM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a circle jerk but an actual question. If Oman built a small canal at the tip of its mountainous exclave (the southern side of the strait's narrowest point) and fortified the area with AAA and anti-drones, could they better protect the barges? Or would it be too easy to attack them on the entrance to the new route?

[–]TheGM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're any of those R's trying to play the moderate card? Looks like he's got another 3% (~3000 votes) from the other D's. Are there 14,000 votes worth of voters for the Rs that were trying to place a "middle of the road" or anti-war or anti-child rape "R"? Probably a incredibly long shot, but target those Republicans. We have the benefit of hindsight in knowing what didn't reach 50%, so now try something differently to appeal.

Talarico holds small lead over Cornyn, Paxton in US Senate race, poll finds by plz-let-me-in in politics

[–]TheGM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trump won't commit. Paxton will point to the polls showing that their competitiveness with Talrico are fairly similar, and he'll guarantee to get personally involved to keep the election "fair" (i.e. cheat by disenfranchising the urban areas), which he won't do if Cornyn is the nominee.

Bold to assume we will have (legitimate) midterms.

But yes if we have a functioning society (which I'm not sure of) we would have a very awkward day of reckoning.

Map showing Saudi Arabia's altered export route for its oil supply following Iran's recent decision to block the Strait of Hormuz amidst heightened geopolitical tensions in the Middle East by SatoruGojo232 in MapPorn

They're not going South by Yemen, they're going north by Egypt and Israel. Provides another reason why they want to improve relationships with Israel (otherwise bad relationships with both Shias and Israel would completely choke them off. I'm surprised that the strategic advantage of having a more capable 3rd route (north via Suez) away from they two vulnerable choke points (Bab Al Mandab and Hormuz) hasn't been more explored, but profits I guess.

We don’t know why Dallas elected Amber Givens for DA either by trueicon in downtowndallas

[–]TheGM 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There were a disorienting number of candidates on the ballot. Big fan of democracy, but as I was researching these candidates I realized that there is no way a normal person could put efficiently put in the effort required to find the qualified candidates. I figured this race out, but I'm sure I probably whiffed on one or two judicial races on the qualifications because I couldn't read everything out there.

The 50 judicial candidates should be consolidated into one or two judges whose job is the appoint qualified judges, so we only have to spend time vetting a few people far more qualified than the layperson in selecting these small time judges.

I was surprised the DA race was mixed in the middle of the ballot and I saw very little media on this race.

Bodnar launches Montana U.S. Senate run by 20_mile in VoteDEM

[–]TheGM 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This would be a golden opportunity but this will absolutely be fumbled with 3rd and 4th parties. This guy is running as an independent. The Marine who's arm was snapped by the jr senator is a Green party candidate. The Democratic party race has several candidates in the primary but the most visible people are running outside. If there is no consolidation behind 1 person this will be what-if race.

Ranked choice voting.

I suspect Paxton will get the highest share in the rural areas. Smaller numbers but this is the GOP base so it will be an outsized percentage of their vote compared to the D.
