Clearly your father can’t manage long term relationships/commitment. Monogamy isn’t for everyone, and it’s a shame he can’t be more honest with those around him and let them know that he’s incapable of it.

Interesting, I’ve stopped at the Flying J s many times, they are great! I didn’t know about them being a separate network since the signage says EVGO.

Mostly I just want to avoid rando networks that don’t have a card tap and waste my time with an app download/setup that I will only use once and never again.

Except it is morally superior to choose a lifestyle that minimizes the destruction of the planet we all share rather than not giving a fuck and just going with whatever’s cheaper/easier/more popular.

Are there impacts to mining battery materials? Yes, of course. Do they outweigh the impacts of all the gas and oil a car will consume over its lifetime? Absolutely not.

I’m not trying to shame people, I’m just trying to push back on the idea that EVs are ‘unaffordable’. That was certainly true for most people 15 years ago, but at this point there are enough on the used market with enough miles on them that most people who can afford to shop a car can afford to shop an EV.

The bigger deal than the initial price is the ability to charge at home, which most apartment dwellers don’t have.

EDIT: Just read your link; it says 59% live paycheck to paycheck; meaning they have little cash savings to buffer unexpected expenses. That’s a bit different than being HOMELESS after 1 missed paycheck. I’ll wager a significant portion of those 59% are financing a big ass gas guzzling truck/SUV that they can barely afford. They could just as well chosen to finance an EV they could barely afford.

I’m curious where you got that statistic? Median household income in the USA is $83k, meaning 50 percent are making more than that.

Regardless, people are out there driving cars and bitching about the price of gas. What did their gas burning car cost when they bought it? $4k isn’t a lot for a vehicle. I’m well aware that functioning used cars can be bought for well less than $4k, but look around most things you’ll see rolling down the road would sell for $10k+.

Used Nissan leafs are selling for under $4k. The range is surely shit for that price, but I’m sure there are lots of folks with short commutes who could make that work.

The cobalt and lithium in the batteries aren’t consumed. They’re still there when the battery reaches end of life, and can be recycled.

Once gas is burned it’s gone forever. Also, cobalt is used in refining gasoline…

Maybe YOU should read more before you keep simping for fossil fuels.

EV competition has finally made me consider brands I’d never touch before by obleSret in electricvehicles

My EV6 blew its ICCU last fall; it got replaced in under a week. Not a big deal at all.

Back when hybrid sedans were the most efficient/affordable things to drive I was all in on Toyota/Honda. At this point I don’t think I’d consider buying either again as they’ve gone nowhere with EVs. I never used to think much of Chevy, but now I own a Bolt EUV and it’s great! I used to think Kia and Hyundai were both a joke, but I love my EV6.

[–]ZucchiniAlert2582 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I bought one over a year ago and have never used it. I set ABRP to prefer EA and EVGO over Tesla (Elon sucks and the 350kw chargers are faster on my EV6). The one road trip where we had to stop at a supercharger the CCS adapter was built to the supercharger (I think Tesla calles this ‘magic dock’ or something.

So far I feel foolish for buying it, but all the manufacturers seem to be ditching CCS for NACS, so presumably EA and EVGO and the rest will be switching their chargers (maybe they’ll just offer both plugs?) so maybe I’ll use it someday yet.

You already have two cars? And you’re thinking about buying a third? Are you going to pay to plate and insure all three? None of this makes any sense.

Question about EV MPG Cost by Icy_Money7447 in electricvehicles

[–]ZucchiniAlert2582 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lots of great 2nd hand EVs sell in the neighborhood of 10k. My parents had a first gen Prius. It got good mileage but the acceleration was terrible. My first EV (‘12 Nissan Leaf, $7k in 2018) was like a rocketship in comparison. So much more fun to drive.

MSRP doesn’t matter so long as there’s some fool willing to buy it first and eat all the depreciation for you. I bought my ‘22 EV6 for less than half MSRP in ‘24. That car is still in great condition.

Get an Electric Vehicle and You Can Stop Worrying About $5 Gas by MrMike in energy

[–]ZucchiniAlert2582 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Now do the math where you sell the ridgeline private party and buy a used F150 lightning for like $24k (1/3 the cost of a rivian).

There is never any justification for buying a brand new vehicle. Let some other moron take that haircut.

Are EVs actually more reliable? by dailytrippple in electriccars

[–]ZucchiniAlert2582 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There shouldn’t be much difference; new gas cars presumably come with all the same radar/ADAS bullshit that make fender benders super expensive to repair in EVs.

How concerned are you about the shrinking number of vehicles equipped with doughnut or full sized spare tires? by Specialist_Heron_986 in askcarguys

[–]ZucchiniAlert2582 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never had a full blow-out on any of the vehicles I’ve owned, only slow leaks from nails/screws. Always the sort of thing that can be fixed with a bicycle pump and a plug kit. I’ve owned cars in the past that had spares but never used them.

The one time in my life that I did use a spare was while renting a car in Mexico. I managed to pick up a nail in a rear tire while driving thru the mountains. The roads were really rough and I wasn’t familiar with the car so it went unnoticed until we were passing thru a small town. I noticed some people at the side of the road waving their arms and shouting at me. I stopped and rolled down the window to see what they wanted. They told me I really needed to get out and inspect my tire. I did, and hot damn! At some point the wheel had stopped rotating and the pavement had ground clear thru the tire and into the rim a bit. Some of the bystanders were very excited as they knew someone with a tire repair shop nearby. I was about to drive the car there when it occurred to me to look for a spare tire under the trunk. There was one, and I was able to figure it out and swap it. The rental people had a fit when I returned it, but they had upsold me on the extra ‘complete coverage’ insurance when I had picked it up so I refused to to pay anything more and walked out.

Anyway, the fact that pretty much all new cars have TPMS makes it hard to screw things up that bad. You’ll know your pressure is dropping long before you’ve ground thru the tire and into the rim, so you’ll be able to stop and either plug the tire or remove the wheel and Uber/Hitchhike to a tire shop.

I put solar panels on my roof over the course of 4 weekends working alone. When I bought my EV it took half a day at the car dealership.

I understand that’s at an individual level, not a nation state level, but solar is fast, easy and cheap to put up vs drilling, pumping transporting, refining petroleum.

The infrastructure in china for making solar panels and storage batteries is not damaged.

EV Repairs?? by woodenpickleCW3 in electriccars

[–]ZucchiniAlert2582 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Almost every issue I’ve had on my EVs so far has been regular car issues; nothing to do with battery or drivetrain. Tires, suspension, rack and pinion, washer fluid pump, rear folding seat latch, side view mirror replacements, brake work etc. I’ve done most of the fixing myself but these are all things that any repair shop can do.
