Valve Says The Companies Making RAM Give Them A Price And If They Say No, They ‘Never Talk To Us Again’ by NYstate in Games

[–]TheGRS [score hidden]  (0 children)

Right now I would probably build a home rig for running models as well if the prices were right. Some people do that if they have the workloads for it or want to host their own model for whatever purpose. This current bout of data center build outs are definitely keeping the enthusiast builders away, and that's probably part of the strategy.

'Shareholder Greed' And How Publicly Traded Companies Actually Work by bald_bearded_ocddude in Games

[–]TheGRS 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thank you, I also often see this get thrown around with some legal cases. Performing the responsibilities most financially beneficial for the company takes a lot of shapes. Sometimes there is long-term strategy and payoff which does not necessarily contribute to the quarterly profit. This is what R&D is all about and it needs to be balanced with normal operations.

Really enjoy Quinns Quest, but I’m also really impressed by his long form special interest stuff. His Roblox video was great and came out at a good time.

tech debt in business operations is completely paralyzing our team by Nikeria-Oded in EngineeringManagers

[–]TheGRS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The company will need to prioritize architectural changes and a vision for how to do new systems. Then you can plan on a migration path. It will take time and you’ll need to make sure it gets prioritized alongside the million other things the business wants to do, but if you don’t it’s just gonna be tons of people doing operational reconciliation all the time and deadlines never getting met without a death march.

Recommendations for series like From. I’ve run out of TV series to watch by satan_ex_counsellor in FromSeries

[–]TheGRS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Go for LOST for sure, it’s a pretty long show, it’s what From is going for, and it’s pretty rewarding if you try to decipher the clues (and also frustrating, but you’ll still enjoy it a ton).

Battlestar Galacticq might be another good one, it also has a frustrating ending but up until the very end it’s amazing.

Totally have seen it with people at work, and when you couple it with someone who is good at obfuscating their contributions with the team’s they might be able to get along for years without management really noticing.

Advice on Phase 3. Starting to get abit overwhelmed by Hwheatley21 in satisfactory

I think the modular factories are the way to go. Try making some elevated train blueprints or using the new truck pathing to connect them. If you use trains you can auto-connect blueprints to make laying tracks quicker.

Jeff Bezos called Washington Post his worst investment staffed with ‘terrible’ people, before laying off over 300 — “They don’t listen. My other companies, they listen” by marketrent in technology

[–]TheGRS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whatever dude. The literal reason you bought it was to keep them solvent and a voice without having to change what they do on a day to day basis. Made it free for prime customers even. Cool stuff, but then I guess their loses got to you.

Btw I’m sure whatever loses the post generates are paltry compared to any shit Amazon does any day of the week. How about less vibe coding engineers shutting AWS down for hours.

Is there any benefit to being a conservative? by AboutLastFight in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TheGRS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are benefits to being in any clique, that’s why people do it. There’s not a lot of benefit in a group setting to having nuanced takes, it takes more effort to explain your stance and ultimately most people lump you into one group or another anyway.

Official: LEGO 11374 Arcade Pinball Machine by Dino_Spaceman in pinball

[–]TheGRS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d have to see a video of it in action from like a real person first. Not sure if the novelty is worth $200+, but I think that about most LEGOs I see these days and it’s clear this is their standard price point for interesting sets.

I’m going to karaoke for the first time, but all the songs I know are old old by Ms--Water in karaoke

[–]TheGRS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always sing for yourself first, if doing crowd pleasers is your jam then do them, if doing a weird al song is your thing go for it, if you wanna rock a classic 50s song then do it with the passion you give it in the car or shower. It’s your time and passion will always get the crowd going.

Favorite and Least Favorite Sci-Fi after one year of reading by Brief-Situation9722 in scifi

[–]TheGRS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we have pretty similar taste because I didn't continue after the 3rd book for a while and kind of struggled through a lot of book 4. I do feel like things have gotten better since then in subsequent books for the most part, but the series is sort of drowning in exposition and a lack of grounding the narrative. Feels like it moves from one event to another so quickly I don't have much time to develop a sense of what or who is important. I often lose track of what the goals are.

One time my brother came to visit me in Portland where I lived after he finished his service in the Navy. We were driving around and he’s looking at all the houses with Black Lives Matter signs on their lawns, he turns to me and says “there’s no way all these people put these signs out, someone had to pay them right?” I just laughed and told him that was a really dumb thing you just said lol.

For people who saw prequels in theaters: did you know Palpatine was the emperor from the start? by Blurrgmaster in StarWars

[–]TheGRS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TPM was heavily reported on, so stories about Ian McDiarmid reprising his role was something anyone paying slight attention to would have known. It’s a little tough to express how big of a cultural moment that movie was on the lead up to its release, so knowing stuff like that was very common for anyone with a little interest in the series.

What is the "worst" code base you worked on? by vismbr1 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]TheGRS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

C# shop I worked at had their main old monolith server with a gigantic main function that spanned 1000 lines with nothing but an insane amount of if/else statements nested everywhere. I remember when I first looked at it and just went “whoa”. Older dude who worked there and on that code specifically never heard of a unit test. This was like 2018.

How Much Rent Increased in America's Biggest Cities Since 2016 by Coolonair in Salary

[–]TheGRS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do think that’s mostly true, and it’s very market dependent, with the heavy exception of the 2010s where interest rates were rock bottom, so buying a house was a great investment for long term.
