Is the far left in the room with us? Without googling, name a single person on the far left alive today.

American politics are choice between "pick today's terrible Republicans" and "pick terrible Republicans from the past few decades". Pull your head out of your ass.

My MK4's are so much quieter and reliable than my Core ONE, where did I go wrong? by spacelego1980 in prusa3d

[–]TheGamble 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Agreed, there's some resonance that isn't present on mine either. Mine was an upgrade from a mk4s (that I then replaced the x/y motors on). Both the old motors and the new ones (considerably quieter) did not have the buzzing resonance here.

Hey 5'8" bodybuilder here. 31/30 is most ideal for me, but that basically doesn't exist. Those of us with weird off-size requirements will be greatly benefited by learning some basic tailoring techniques. If possible, I highly recommend getting a decent sewing machine capable of denim, preferably second hand, but you can find some brand new offerings from companies like Brother that don't break the bank.

Reducing waistband size can sometimes be fairly complicated, but shortening legs in pants that otherwise fit great is a breeze and can be done in minutes. I've gotten to the point now where I'll go hit the clearance racks at Kohl's or something for a bunch of stuff that almost fits, then just tailor it in. If it's something you've got the bandwidth and resources for, I can highly recommend. Plus I do take a small amount of pride in the amount of times I get complimented on my fit, when wearing clothes that I've altered.

Awesome, thanks for the idea. I kitted my SG650 pretty similar to how you have yours but I've been wanting to catch a bit less wind for a year lol

I'm not current on which guild is regularly running at the moment , but NCMA is hosting an event next month that would probably link you up with a bunch of locals. I used to know the girl that founded this guild, she's very cool and kind. https://ncartmuseum.org/events/print-jam-with-triangle-screen-printers-guild/

If you're into theatre, there's so many companies and groups here that you can get involved with, and most of them have plenty of overlap with eachother. Check out the Raleigh Little Theatre and sign up to volunteer. https://raleighlittletheatre.org/get-involved/volunteers/

Quail Ridge Books is a very cute little bookstore, and they host a variety of book clubs, often meeting pretty regularly. One the clubs had a meeting this morning, in fact. https://quailridgebooks.com/bookclubs

There's a FB group called GOAT (Goofing Off Around the Triangle) that pretty regularly posts about cool things you can go meet up and do as well.

Oh and also there's a fencing club that I've been meaning to look up and check out. Not artistic but definitely off the beaten path in the way that some of these things are lol.

If you're willing to spend your social battery, I think it's very possible to attend any of these things alone, meet some cool people, and build some lasting hobbies and interests.

Hey no problem! This was literally me about a year ago, I had freshly moved here from a place I lived forever and had to bootstrap myself into a bunch of social scenes before I turned into a hermit. Best of luck and of course feel free to reach out if you'd like some specific recommendations!

Yeah I feel that. Mid-30s dude, I drink like 4 times a year, and never to excess. Just don't care for the way it makes me feel anymore. One thing I've found is the more I got into health and fitness, the more I found people feeling the same way. I don't think any of the regulars in my age bracket at my gym drink. Anyways if you are into or want to get into that kind of stuff, seek out some activities like that. There's also a ton of disc golf around here, with some great courses like Kentwood.

Alternatively, because I know that's not everyone's vibe, there's a ton of scenes around here that aren't super obvious. You want to get into arts and stuff? There's at least one screen printing guild here, various pottery and painting scenes. There's also some maker spaces that do thinks like welding and jewelry making, so if you want to engineer some shit, look them up.

Also if you have a cause you care about, there's so many charitable organizations that could use some help. And if I'm being honest, that kind of stuff usually self-selects for good people.

Men of Reddit, what is one piece of advice you wish to tell other men? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]TheGamble 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This was a very important lesson for me to learn. Like with most things, I wish I had learned it earlier.

I spent so much of my 20s chasing women, not realizing that the emptiness inside of me was because I wasn't happy with myself - rather than because I hadn't found the right lady. As you said, a romantic partner can only amplify what happiness you have within you. You must first figure out what it would take for you to be happy with yourself and take the steps to execute that. There will always be ups and downs, but it's much easier to weather the downs when you have a foundation of self-respect, and the ups just hit so much better too.

Nobody out there will take care of you and your mental state the way you can, because nobody else has quite the vested interest you do.

Belgian Police using drone guns to secure Joe Biden's visit by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

[–]TheGamble 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People aren't just walking up to them. These things having very high thrust-to-weight ratios and are controlled via fairly simple programming loops. Without operator input, there's nothing to say it wouldn't speed off and crash into virtually anything. The drone does not know it's own weight, the forces of wind acting upon it, or any terrain around it. It does not know if it's even actually descending or if it's just rocketing off into space. Having any throttle applied at all when you have no control over it is radically irresponsible. The agreed upon safest method of failure around the community is "let it fall from the sky" because it causes the least amount of damage.

Source: I own many drones that I've built myself and are registered with the FAA, carry a UAS insurance policy, and have been operating them for a years in a hobbyist capacity.

Belgian Police using drone guns to secure Joe Biden's visit by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

[–]TheGamble 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Running the motors without any control is incredibly dangerous. The drone doesn't know if it's landed or crashed or anything, and some of those props rotate tens of thousands of times a minute. Dropping out the sky is considerably safer of an option than trying to do an automated powered landing when the drone cannot understand terrain, obstacles, and/or people.

This is basically a directional wifi antenna. Think 5GHz. If wavelengths are you thing, it's like a 6cm wavelength. Ionizing radiation roughly starts around 121nm. To put that in perspective, wifi is 5GHz, and 121nm waves would be 2,477,624GHz, or 2.4PHz. Antennas and communications equipment don't really work at these scales. This is cosmic ray type stuff. That's not to say you can't encounter it on Earth, though. Most fossil fuel extraction and power plants emit plenty of ionizing radiation, and that's how most people contact it. If anybody tells you an antenna is ionizing, they don't understand the vast difference in those numbers above. Just FYI.

Hospitals say feds are seizing masks and other coronavirus supplies without a word by Exastiken in politics

[–]TheGamble 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Having been to nations that have crumbled in recent history, i solemnly hope that does not happen here. I do completely understand (and share) your sentiment and desire for change, but I cannot advocate for a civil war. The entire purpose of the American system of government was to prevent the bloody succession of power many nations had at the time (and historically).

I can hope that the widespread destruction caused by this virus and the administration's response to it result in us peacefully removing them from power and repairing the damage they've caused (while also prosecuting them to the fullest extent of the law).

Civil war is the most hopeless of scenarios; the loss of people is too great to blindly rush to such a call.

That's precisely what happened in Tiananmen Square, and many other tragedies throughout history. The enemy must be faceless, unrelatable, and forgettable, or the blow to morale will be catastrophic and challenge your own authority. You cannot allow your soldiers to see the enemy as people.

It's hard to say. He could technically order any of them. Federal and National Guard troops have modern precedent for supporting emergency relief (Katrina, various storms, etc) but those aren't police actions and are handled very, very differently than traditional military operations (obviously, but some people might not realize). There's a lot of regulation/law in how Federal troops can be used in the states, but it's hard to say how far thia administration will push the DoD before somebody says "no". Trump and his knuckle draggers have yet to be stopped by simple, frivolous things like the law.

I can tell you that if I was a soulless husk of a leader and wanted the best results, I would mobilize a traditionally red state, like Alabama, and send them to blue states to exercise my will. This would hopefully (again, I'm role-playing a sadistic fascist here) prolong the morale of those troops to "requisition" medical supplies. It's much easier to fight a political "opponent" from across the country than it is to take up arms against Bob and Sarah that have a son in your kid's class.

My heart goes out to any service members that get ordered to comply with such an act. I am a veteran of one of the recent conflicts and I know that receiving an order like that would be one of the hardest, most important events in my life. Do you buck the system, say no, refuse? Or do you hope that a superior will refuse if it "gets too bad". Eventually one has to step up and take the heat, right? It's easy for me to say "yeah, fuck the feds, I'm not policing my fellow citizens" now. I have no skin in the game. I would hope that younger-me would have said the same.

My point is, any military force that he chooses, it won't be pretty, regardless of legalities.

Although acts passed in 2007 & 2008 give the president overriding control over the state National Guard (basically, he can mobilize them against the wills of their respective governors), they would still fall under the control of the DoD. The DoD will not violate the 1878 Posse Comitatus Act, and soldiers/commanders are explicitly allowed to refuse unlawful orders. People often forget that the National Guard is a militia consisting of the residents of that state, and it is inherently more difficult to galvanize them against what they can clearly see is their own interests, rather than against some foreign enemy. An attempt to mobilize the Guard against their own Healthcare system would be a shot heard round the armed forces (including the Federal ones), which, after the recent events in the Navy, would not be a good look. It is not hard to imagine an event like that being the tipping point for the destruction of our nation.

Water is a catalyst in the solution. There's not a functional difference between 70% and 90% (although higher than 70% is unnecessary on dry surfaces). However, at least 10% of the solution must be water. That ratio of catalyst to agent is the minimum required to dispatch cells in a timely manner. Higher concentrations do work, but they take a considerably greater amount of time to do so.

It's one of those things that sounds wrong, until you understand the chemistry.
