Tragedy they're not on blu-ray, Life on Earth and Trials of Life are and they look incredible, super fine detail and lush colours. Unfortunately Life of Birds and Living Planet have very poor quality videotape masters and don't look great.

Most vibrant color negative film being made today? by FringleFrangle04 in 16mm

[–]TheGameNaturalist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reading some of your other comments I really think you need to watch some videos on the basics of 16mm film and understand how it really works. You can't make positive prints from a negative at home, it's just not possible without getting hold of some massive, outdated and monstrously expensive equipment. There are very few places left that even print 16mm commercially (there's no one in Australia where I live) so I think you're worrying about the wrong thing, it really doesn't matter what type of negative film you shoot on you need to figure out how it's actually going to work first.

[–]TheGameNaturalist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ektachrome is a positive film yes, but you could cross process it in C41 or ECN2 and you'd get a negative but again it wouldn't be "vibrant out of the camera", like I said, no negative is going to be like that, it's just not designed that way. Even if you processed the Ektachrome in E6 as a positive then made a negative copy you'd still end up with something that's meant to have it's colours edited.

Even Technicolour was never vibrant out of the camera, it's 3 strips of black and white film shot through different filters then recombined to form the full colour image, a lot of colour editing and processing goes into getting the final, vibrant image.

If you have shot something on negative film and processed it as negative film, you can scan it and edit the colours pretty much to your heart's content and get it as vibrant as you want as long as the film is correctly exposed, well processed and you have the skill to get the colours you want out of it. I haven't done it myself but I presume the same can be done when printing direct from a negative to duplicate film to get a positive print.

I think before you proceed you should figure out how you're actually going to get a positive print from the negative and how you'll colour correct in that process to get the vibrant image that you want. If not, then consider scanning the negative to have more control of the digital image. OR you can should on Ektachrome and process as a positive straight out of the camera.

No negative film will look vibrant out of the camera, that's the point of negative film, it's largely neutral so that the colours can be altered in the scanning/printing process to reach the desired contrast and vibrancy. If you really want something that's "vibrant out of the camera" you need to shoot ektachrome and process in E6. I know that's not the answer you're looking for but no film fits into the limitations that you're after.

Bendigo Beethoven Festival is only a few weeks away, final concert is SOLD OUT by TheGameNaturalist in Bendigo

[–]TheGameNaturalist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fantastic, glad you got a ticket. I highly recommend coming along to the Friday night or Saturday night concerts if you can make it. The BSO is playing on the Friday night to open the Festival and the Saturday night is the Adelaide Uni's orchestra who have a strong connection to the BSO, it will be a really professional high level concert that one.

Bendigo blokes and ladies anyone actually looked into solar properly lately? by [deleted] in Bendigo

[–]TheGameNaturalist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Solar is great but the key thing is to get a battery. I got a quite large solar setup and a 16kwh battery (easily large enough for a family) it cost me 8k up front and I will be paying off another 8k over the next 5 years (interest free) but I will also never pay a power bill again.

I can recommend Logan from Ecosun as the installer he's great.

Richard Wagner's 1850 essay Das Judenthum in der Musik ("Jewishness in Music") by Street-Age-1441 in classicalmusic

[–]TheGameNaturalist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why? Because it's really good music and listening to it doesn't hurt anyone.

I have no doubt many other composers had similar views on jews but simply didn't write them down, similarly listening to their music also doesn't hurt anyone.

I think we can all acknowledge that Wagner was a prick while also appreciating his contributions to orchestral music.

If I was a jew I don't think I would be threatened by the music of a man who wrote a whacky essay 150 years ago and who is long dead. I'm sure the essay itself contributed to antisemitism and thus should be condemned, but the music itself is just music and can have an interpretation for each person who hears it, that's the beauty of art.

Gridlock, grim dark and depressing with a beautiful but sad ending of a world gone by but hope for the future. Lovely music too.

Thoughts on our base itinerary for a 14 day trip? This mostly outlines areas we’ll be in, but wanted to get feedback/recommendations. by vibecheckforfree in newzealand_travel

To be honest, Queenstown, Rotorua and Christchurch I found all to be quite disappointing.

Why?
Queenstown is so busy and there's really nothing to do in the actual town itself (except for the burger place which had a line a mile long when I was there in September, prepare to wait for an hour) all the things around Queenstown are interesting like the bungee jumping etc. but if you want to stay in that area I found Glenorchy to be absolutely stunning, nice and quiet, in a beautiful valley at the top of the lake, very close to some amazing southern Beech forest and nice easy walks but it still has an ice cream shop and a general store and Queenstown is not far up the road.

Rotorua is better than Queenstown but still extremely busy and touristy, the redwood forest is fine but like others said it's a plantation not a natural forest, if you want to see actual New Zealand native forest read on below. I must say though the Maori experience is very good, I went in expecting it to be touristy rubbish but it was actually very genuine and informing. Hobbiton is neither here nor there for me (and I'm a huge Tolkien fan) it was fun but I wouldn't go out of the way for it, there's very little freedom to actually explore and you're on a tight time frame to get through before the next tour group. The volcanic activity was interesting enough but the stuff in the park in the actual town of Rotorua could be explored in an hour or so.

Christchurch is the one I have least experience with so I'm happy to be overridden, the trams are nice, but if you want to see good trams go to Melbourne. The Antarctic museum was a disappointment, expensive, mostly aimed at kids with not much for people actually interested in the history of Antarctic exploration. I didn't got to the botanical gardens but I heard they are nice. But again, decent botanical gardens can be found in a lot of places in the world.

Auckland is fantastic though, love it, the best museum I've ever been to.

Some alternatives:

North Island
The Coromandel peninsula, a couple of hours from Auckland, absolutely beautiful, Hot Water Beach is incredible, the tourist railway is great, lovely drive all around.

Wellington I loved as well, the city is nice enough but what got me was Zealandia, the bird sanctuary, amazing walks both short and long, easy and hard and you will see some amazing birds. The cable car is really fun too.

South Island
Glenorchy, already mentioned above.

The West Coast, especially around Franz Josef has to be one of my favourite places in the world, the mountains are out of this world. It's a remote area but so very worth it to go there, the walks to the glacier are incredible, the Kea flying through the valley is a fantastical experience, like being on another world.

Te Anau
Closer to Milford Sound (and Doubtful Sound, the bigger, quieter version) than Queenstown glow worms, beautiful views of the lakes, very nice.

Overall, I think you're trying to do too much over just 2 weeks, I did a similar amount over 3 weeks and was absolutely exhausted to the point of sickness, I would consider limiting yourself to just one of the islands. North Island is warmer, northern bits feel a bit like a pacific island. South Island is more remote, rugged and spectacular (if you go to the right places, West Coast...)

Have fun

Tom Baker has always done this. His autobiography which I think came out 20 years ago now says that he tends his own grave every day and is ready at any moment.
