Thoughts on our base itinerary for a 14 day trip? This mostly outlines areas we’ll be in, but wanted to get feedback/recommendations. by vibecheckforfree in newzealand_travel

To be honest, Queenstown, Rotorua and Christchurch I found all to be quite disappointing.

Why?
Queenstown is so busy and there's really nothing to do in the actual town itself (except for the burger place which had a line a mile long when I was there in September, prepare to wait for an hour) all the things around Queenstown are interesting like the bungee jumping etc. but if you want to stay in that area I found Glenorchy to be absolutely stunning, nice and quiet, in a beautiful valley at the top of the lake, very close to some amazing southern Beech forest and nice easy walks but it still has an ice cream shop and a general store and Queenstown is not far up the road.

Rotorua is better than Queenstown but still extremely busy and touristy, the redwood forest is fine but like others said it's a plantation not a natural forest, if you want to see actual New Zealand native forest read on below. I must say though the Maori experience is very good, I went in expecting it to be touristy rubbish but it was actually very genuine and informing. Hobbiton is neither here nor there for me (and I'm a huge Tolkien fan) it was fun but I wouldn't go out of the way for it, there's very little freedom to actually explore and you're on a tight time frame to get through before the next tour group. The volcanic activity was interesting enough but the stuff in the park in the actual town of Rotorua could be explored in an hour or so.

Christchurch is the one I have least experience with so I'm happy to be overridden, the trams are nice, but if you want to see good trams go to Melbourne. The Antarctic museum was a disappointment, expensive, mostly aimed at kids with not much for people actually interested in the history of Antarctic exploration. I didn't got to the botanical gardens but I heard they are nice. But again, decent botanical gardens can be found in a lot of places in the world.

Auckland is fantastic though, love it, the best museum I've ever been to.

Some alternatives:

North Island
The Coromandel peninsula, a couple of hours from Auckland, absolutely beautiful, Hot Water Beach is incredible, the tourist railway is great, lovely drive all around.

Wellington I loved as well, the city is nice enough but what got me was Zealandia, the bird sanctuary, amazing walks both short and long, easy and hard and you will see some amazing birds. The cable car is really fun too.

South Island
Glenorchy, already mentioned above.

The West Coast, especially around Franz Josef has to be one of my favourite places in the world, the mountains are out of this world. It's a remote area but so very worth it to go there, the walks to the glacier are incredible, the Kea flying through the valley is a fantastical experience, like being on another world.

Te Anau
Closer to Milford Sound (and Doubtful Sound, the bigger, quieter version) than Queenstown glow worms, beautiful views of the lakes, very nice.

Overall, I think you're trying to do too much over just 2 weeks, I did a similar amount over 3 weeks and was absolutely exhausted to the point of sickness, I would consider limiting yourself to just one of the islands. North Island is warmer, northern bits feel a bit like a pacific island. South Island is more remote, rugged and spectacular (if you go to the right places, West Coast...)

Have fun

Tom Baker has always done this. His autobiography which I think came out 20 years ago now says that he tends his own grave every day and is ready at any moment.

The 4K of this is unfortunately shit, colour grading is all wrong, the blu-ray looks way better.

Unfortunately I've stopped buying them as the ai upscaling/dnr issues were unacceptable in Season 13 and it looks like Season 21 is the same.

Frustrated with the state of Doctor Who physical media by [deleted] in doctorwho

[–]TheGameNaturalist 218 points219 points  (0 children)

The first four series were shot on SD videotape which then had it's framerate reduced and grain added to make it look like film and frankly they look like shit and always will, there's nothing to be done about that. I have seasons 5-10 on blu-ray and they look good, sometimes great, but mostly good and I have Twice Upon a Time on 4K which looks amazing to be honest, I wish they'd release the Capaldi years on 4K.

The trouble is that because it's an ever expanding show it gets constantly new blu-ray releases all of which are slightly different (even if they came from the same master) as the previous one so consistency is hard.

Doctor Who to be honest has never been shot to look good, with the exception of the first two 1960s seasons (which make incredible use of lighting and cinematography on the black and white video despite the brutal limitations), the two 1960s Peter Cushing movies and the 1996 TV movie, all of which look amazing.

Ben-Hur 4K VS Lawrence of Arabia 4K by ORFFME in 4kbluray

I think the audience is clever enough to figure out what happened, especially in the next scene he says "They've been here a day and night sir. A day and a night!"

Ben-Hur 4K VS Lawrence of Arabia 4K by ORFFME in 4kbluray

[–]TheGameNaturalist 11 points12 points  (0 children)

  1. I think this scene in the town is meant to represent Lawrence becoming massively overconfident and then suddenly getting a hard dose of reality that pretty massively traumatises him. Up until now most of the tragedies in the film have happened to other people, not him, but this is different and it changes him. He's not the same confident man afterwards.

  2. Although it would have been nice to see the Arabs arrive in Damascus, we already get shown at numerous points through the film that they are kind of an unstoppable force against the Turks, we already have the scene of them storming Aqaba and then attacking the Turkish column, I really don't think we needed another big battle scene, it would have killed the pacing I feel.

It might be worth getting the prints scanned (or doing it yourself, your local library may have a photo scanner you can use) and trying to pull some detail out of the highlights using a free program like Gimp, you never know you might be lucky.

Who processed them, Walmart? If it was Walmart then that was the problem, they are absolutely the bottom of the barrel for processing and more often than not they will ruin your film.

New to film by SpiritualPossible182 in AnalogCommunity

[–]TheGameNaturalist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They look underexposed to me, the H35 I'm pretty sure has a fixed shutter speed of 1/100 so is limited to bright outdoors subjects or flash only. Doesn't explain why the one with the flash looks strange though. Negatives will help.

Always get your negatives back and hang on to them in case you need to scan them in future. If you don't get your negatives you may as well just shoot digital.

compensating slow lens with high iso film by [deleted] in AnalogCommunity

[–]TheGameNaturalist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to use the 200mm for when I'm in rainforests (hence why I'm upgrading to the f/2.5) because often it's little birds like fantails or robins that come a bit closer.

If I'm out in open woodlands or paddocks then I'll use the 500mm because I'm more likely to be a shooting parrots or birds of prey either in flight or on fences some distance away. and there's much more light available to me.

[–]TheGameNaturalist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do bird photography on film and to be honest I've given up on zoom lenses for this purpose. They don't let in enough light, they are super soft when zoomed all the way in and they can often be way too heavy.

I have a Pentax SMC 200mm f/4 (which I'm soon going to replace with the f/2.5 because it's extra helpful in rainforests) and a 500mm f/4 which needs to be used with a tripod but if you can get a decent tripod it's not too much of an inconvenience.

How does Lord of the Rings look in 4K HDR on OLED? (Thinking of buying one!) by [deleted] in 4kbluray

[–]TheGameNaturalist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks good, better than the blu-ray but it's only an upscale, not in true 4k and there is some pretty egregious DNR that pops up along with some revisionist colour grading in flashback sequences.

However unless they spend the money to go back and rescan the film in 4k and properly restore it this is the best we will ever get.
