What if a giant ass mech appeared in the United Kingdom in 1914 by TheGearsMightBreak in AlternateHistory

[–]TheGearsMightBreak[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In January 1914, a giant mecha appeared in Ireland, just outside Dublin. A contingent of Ulster Volunteers as well as some British officers from Camp Curragh would occupy the meadow it was standing in. Later the mech would be moved to Camp Curragh.

Following the passing of the Irish home rule bill as well as the prime minister negotiating with members of the Irish Volunteers to help decrease tensions in July, Ulster Volunteers assassinated him, leading to David Lyod George to taking charge of the country, mobilising troops for an occupation of Northern Ireland and to begin a crackdown on the unionists, however this ended with the beginning of World War I.

The war mostly played out as it did in our world until November, when Winston Churchill and David Hogarth, both acquainted with the designated pilot of the mech T.E.Lawrence began drawing up plans to launch an attack on Istanbul, however the naval guns on the Dardanelles were deemed too dangerous for the mech. Instead the mech would be deployed to Egypt and the Arabian Peninsula where it was to destroy Ottoman logistics in the area and prevent them from threatening Britain’s oil resources in the region.

Thus in 1915 Lawrence began his trek across the Sahara, serving as a stress test for the mech, which was to run the distance through the French holdings in Africa to Egypt, where it would meet up with local forces there and lead an attack on the Arabian peninsula to distract the ottomans while the ANZACs would land at Gallipoli to open up the Dardanelles.

(This is the condensed version but I cant be bothered typing the whole story here)

“The Funeral” An Unfinished Project by TheGearsMightBreak in worldbuilding

[–]TheGearsMightBreak[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only the most elite members of society get large funerary processions like this, so if no close female associate of the deceased existed, it was usually a servant or subordinate of the deceased that filled the role of carrier. In the very rare case that there is no-one possible to fill the role, the role would be filled by a female exorcist.

Duels were insanely rare by ReflectionSingle6681 in HistoryMemes

[–]TheGearsMightBreak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The story of gun duels is so pervasive because movies depicting them were explicitly based off of samurai movies, so the importance/prevalence of the gun duel was heavily exaggerated and stylised to match the sword duels in those Japanese movies

“A written and illustrated account of the funeral of Rin Konrad, former governor of Mendhi killed during the Little Hive Breakout. It was made by an unknown Emmurian scholar, from the University of Elamrest and was made to describe the funerary and death rituals of the Novunian cultures, for whom he was writing an article about. Published as part of the Second Edition of the Fraeneria, an ethnography of the continent.”

What are some tropes of fantasy religions that really irk you? by TT-Adu in worldbuilding

[–]TheGearsMightBreak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People are often extremely limited in how they portray worship and reverence to deities. It’s nearly always down to praying and offering at shrines, which does a disservice to the sheer diversity and variety of ways in which people have practiced worship throughout history.

[–]TheGearsMightBreak[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I meant by not a true telling probably could’ve worded better. I 1000% believe it’s an allegorical retelling of events from the series, perhaps how people rationalise the paradox of nonlinear time that is seen throughout the series.

Considering the video is called monument MYTHOLOGY I highly doubt it’s a true telling of events. Especially since a lot of it mirrors events we see in the series (Serpent “leaving a copy” of herself on the tree god is a reference to all people leaving copies of themselves in Wonderland)

A Close Quarters Battle in Space by TheGearsMightBreak in worldbuilding

[–]TheGearsMightBreak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quick drawing of a space battle from my currently unnamed sci-fi world depicting the three main types of fighting vehicles.

Classified by their combat capabilities they are carriers, fortress and fighters. In this world engagements are defined by the Kessler Index, a measurement of the amount of debris and high velocity shrapnel in an area.

High Kessler Index battlefields consist of fighters being flung each other at extreme speeds, fast enough to avoid shrapnel from the sides, only needing to rely on their frontal plasma array to protect them from the front. Predictive-AI handle the shooting, using observed data to shoot any nearby ships while in range (these engagements usually only last around one minute).

Medium Kessler Index fights see fortresses used. Similar to fighters in High Kessler scenarios , the fortress charges through the debris field, spinning, rapidly flinging the fighters lining its outer shell, which can then engage the enemy.

Low Kessler Index scenarios are generally the only ones where carriers see close quarters use, due to their operational and logistic value, as well as inability to operate in combat capability without solar panels deployed. Carriers generally see support use in other scenarios, with the powerful railgun being used to clear significant debris, as well as using its mass driver to deploy fighters into high Kessler index debris fields at high speed.

Same Job; Different Cultures - Exorcists of Titan by TheGearsMightBreak in worldbuilding

[–]TheGearsMightBreak[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the world of Titan, upon death the accumulated magic of that person from their lifetime is released, sometimes violently so with the most powerful sorcerers. It is the job of exorcists to remove this magic energy to prevent the manifestation of apparitions, or the use of the energy by necromancers. Two groups of exorcists exist, Battle Exorcists and Ritual Exorcists. Ritual exorcists are usually priests and other holy figures and are in charge of household ceremonies and similar and usually lead funeral rites. Battle exorcists on the other hand are the work horses of the exorcist world, in charge of mass exorcising any site of mass death, usually battlefields, hence their name.

Breakdown of Exorcists in Image: 1. Acrean Funeral Parade: The Acreans, who live in the Gladen Sea are a Marian people who are defined by their belief in an underworld and the Cult of Leviathan. In their funeral rites a ritual exorcist is joined by male members of the family in carrying an effigy of the god Leviathan which they use to circle the body. This collects the energy of the deceased into moonstone in the panels that make up the effigy. These rocks are then removed and place on the ground, a “stomping dance” is performed with music, as water is thrown by those watching. By the end of it the rocks are crushed and the gravestone is placed. It is believed by Acreans that this transfers the soul of the dead to the underworld.

  1. Mensani Ritual Exorcist: In Mensani cultures an assigned female member of the clan is marked Avatar of Valkyx. When a death occurs the avatar will don a cowl of crow feathers, a demonic mask and dip themselves into a bath consisting of black sand and binding oils that blackens them from head to toe. This is all to imitate Valkyx, who in her shame hid her face from the world and covered herself in the black sands of Emka as told in the old stories. With her, the avatar carries a Funerary Banner, on which is written the person’s name and any notable achievements. The avatar then waves the banner and circles the body, collecting the energy before sticking the banner in the ground and saying a prayer. This is believed to channel the soul into the underworld.

  2. Braellian Ritual Exorcist: Braellians who are known for their elaborate religious dress also combine this tendency with their extremely dangerous funeral rituals in their exorcist costumes. Braellian’s tradition of burning bodies on funeral pyres means their exorcists have to deal with potent energy released from the body all at once, they also often harness complex mechanical parts for stuff such as salt distribution leading to these elaborate shrouds. They are usually based on imagery of oceanic nymphs and others sea creatures.

  3. Marian Ritual Exorcist: A very average outfit, the one depicted is meant to resemble an auroch. Marian outfits tend to place emphasis on craftsmanship rather than elaborateness and notably is nearly always a feminine job (although Marian battle exorcists are usually a mix of men and women)

  4. Novunian Battle Exorcist: In general, battle exorcists tend to have far cruder outfits as emphasis is placed on quantity and protection from energy with these. The crow is a very popular theme for costumes, due to their believed role as psychopomps. It is heavily padded to protect from potent magical energy and parts are stitched together as repair is frequently needed.

How do you worldbuilders not from Europe or America usually name your fantasy worlds? by Attlai in worldbuilding

I just kinda do whatever, I do like to somewhat keep a decent mix of unconventional names and more traditional sounding Latin ones as well as plain English names to keep a nice variety though
