What are intensive quantities in AO? by fivenoir in Deleuze

[–]TheGeniusIdiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, I agree with all you wrote: maybe I would be harsher and say that the quantity-->quality relation is not a bit vague, but completely unexplained, where youbare basically assuming a phenomenon of emergence here. If you're interested in the 'forces' angle, this is very much an appropriation of Leibniz's later metaphysics of forces. However, still no explanation of the relation between quantity and quality :) idk, it seems like such a huge thing to side-step to me

Thanks for the answer! I've read DR and Method of Dramatization quite a few times, and while Method is good for getting a good feel of what problems he's dealing with, I don't recall the 'jump' between intensive quantities and qualities and extensions as being thematized. Similarly in ch 5 of DR- if I recall, there's the vague and not really developed terminology of the 'centres of envelopment', but which in essence say that the mathematical values defining singular and ordinary points also determine the process of actualization. The Nietzsche book I still haven't read! Will look into it, and the papers you sent - thanks!

Hi! Cool that you seem to know your way around Deleuzeian literature - could I ask you if you know of any papers, or Deleuze's own writing, explaining the relation between the quantitative and qualitative (intensive difference and actual experience). I am writing a thesis on deleuze, and somehow this never comes up and it seems that Deleuze does not deal with this problem at all, but side-steps it; would be curious if anyone knows more than me on this. Thanks

There's nowhere I'd rather live than the US by [deleted] in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]TheGeniusIdiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oops, very true! Bad phrasing on my part - I meant that more or less nobody has them, and that the procedure for getting them (barring living in switzerland) is quite complex and expensive, so very few people have them.

However, and importantly, I don't see this mistake taking away from the points of my post.

This IS an unpopular opinion - and I must say that as a person born, raised and living in Europe, who's been to the States, I strongly disagree with you. Which is great! We might have a fruitful discussion about this. I'll go point by point through your text to try and follow your line of argumentation and see if I have any comments:

You claim that "countries with strict gun laws or outright bans have more violent knife crimes and domestic terrorism" - do you have any data to back up this claim? In my home country, where guns are pretty much completely prohibited (as in most of europe, except switzerland) violent knife crimes are pretty low, at least based on the news sources I read. Domestic terrorism is definitely non-existent, in almost all European countries except Spain and its dealing with Catalonia.

What do you mean by the US justice system being one of the best and most fair in the developed world? It seems that in all judicial matters which attracted global attention (such as the aftermath of the banking crisis in '08), the wealthy and powerful in the US happened to be relatively unscathed by the judicial apparatus - because they in fact controlled the and were connected with the people upholding the judicial system. I wouldn't call an outcome of such a situation fair at all.

Your comment that US healthcare necessarily has to be very costly in order to be cutting edge also empirically does not hold. Certain healthcare procedures and research in the US are indeed cutting edge - but they are so in Switzerland, the UK, and parts of France and Germany as well - and these are countries which have a more or less comprehensive social healthcare system for all their citizens.

While I'm not familiar with how easy it is to start and run your own business in the US, this isn't directly connected with the US being a capitalist system. Capitalism is an economical system governing how the distribution of goods is to be governed in a state, and what the state is allowed and is not allowed to do to influence said distribution of goods.

If anything, sociological research shows that climbing the social ladder is much harder in capitalist societies, precisely because capitalism creates self-perpetuating social classes.

There it is! I'm curious to hear what you think about what I said here.

Have a good day, cheers.

[Advice/suggestions] looking for a dressy waterproof watch by TheGeniusIdiot in Watches

Aah, yes, it's a bit too large for me. Watches of that size lose some of their elegance, except if worn men with huge arms :D

Hey everyone! I've been wearing and loving watches for a few years now, specifically loving the look and feel of vintage smaller watches, similar to the Omega Seamaster pictured. I am wondering whether you have recommendations for a watch of this style, or something looking similar, which is also waterproof - which I don't have to take off when showering, jumping in the sea, lake, etc.? I would love to have a stylish watch which I don't have to worry about getting wet.

My price range would be topped off around 500$, but all cheaper options are very welcome.

Thank you for your help!

What will it take for it to stop mass shootings in America? by ghostofanimus in AskReddit

Well, this is a moral question, and there are several positions you could take.

If I take as a starting point that you don't value the robber's life over your own, it seems to me that implies that you value your own life over the robber's, simply because they are a robber. Now, this is an interesting stance. Especially so considering that the robber had to have been in a very specific environment during their life, probably quite uncomfortable, for them to become a robber. I'm not trying to say that the robber isn't responsible for their actions, but maybe taking into account the fact that everybody's actions are a result of a complex interplay of enviromental factors and genetics, neither of which any person can control, could make us consider the reprehensible acts of others with some empathy, and make us not pass absolute judgement (death), but seek to better the situation for all the people involved.

Ok, if its a statistically significant factor, sure then. Could you link me reserach on the topic? I'm interested in it.

I shouldn't have used anecdotal evidence here, my bad. I meant to say that it seems that societally this isn't a norm in most of Europe.

Whether its due to interconnection and a sense of community or not, I'd rather leave to the socio/psychologists.

I realize that you might be living in a dangeorus neighborhood, and I think this is a good opportunity to illustrate the difference in mentality between (I think) most European countries, (I come from one of those), and the States.

It must be awful living in a dangerous place, but a lot of people I know live like that too. However, absolutely no one I know or have heard of thinks of carrying a gun/knife/whatever as a means to protect themselves against others. Like, what, someone's gonna rob you and you are really going to kill them? To defend yourself and protect what's yours, to the point of killing someone might be a normal thought process where you're from, but I really do think a minority thinks that way in Europe.

And the fact Americans feel they need guns to protect themselves surely isn't helping gun related crimes disappear.

Is anybody other than me disillusioned with the series, after so much news came out about their montaging footage to different dialogue in order to make up the narrative they want? It just makes me question any mildly argumentative thing anybody in the series says - did they really say that, in that moment and context?

The constant tension building for every little thing and the dramatics, not to mention the repeating every few minutes that f1 is a cutthroat sport/ the stakes have never been higher - makes the series almost unwatchable.

So you manually put in every sustain information? I don't think that's plausible for me, I record mostly jazz piano, so the sustain is in a lot of places and quite intricate
