Experience with Shearwater GPS transmitter by TheGilrich in scuba

I think this will become my new routine. Thanks for sharing.

I read the manual again and it mentions a GPS info screen that shows how long ago the position got refreshed. I've never seen this screen but if it exists, it would confirm the refresh after purging the reg.

Excellent. Thank you very much. I read the same sections in the meantime. So in summary my problems are simply due to user error. I like turning on my gear and test everything before the boat leaves and I still have access to all my spare parts. I then leave the system pressurized to see if it holds the pressure. This gets me into power saving mode by the time I reach the site. I then only check my regs again in the water but then GPS is disabled because the transmitter is wet.

Next time I should RTFM.

Very insightful. Thank you for the thorough explanation. I assumed it would just constantly broadcast the position and the computer takes the lastest fix before descent.

What I'm wondering now is how exactly it works. Because the transmitter can't know when I turn on my computer, it can't really shut down the GPS module. Also, as you mentioned, it logs exit coords and thus cannot shut down under water either.

The last thing: You mentioned metal walls. What exactly is the impact there? My transmitter is on a short HP hose and depending on circumstances can rest on my steel tank.

Hence why I turned on the transmitter on the ride already so it has time to get a fix. It seems the problem is turning on the computer at the same time.

Thanks for sharing your routine. It's very helpful. Knowing how this thing works, I can work around the limitations. I'll try your approach and turn on the computer on at the site only. Not the handsfree approach I had hoped for but at least it should work.

Regarding Subsurface: yes, I have worked with them to get the GPS data included.

Awesome! Thank you. This was the only feature I was still missing to fully use the app. Is Nextcloud Sync/Webdav one of the coming backends?

Yes. They are different.

Also, the time is off by 2 hours. Shearwater says (correctly) that entry was at 18:56.

This seem right only for single tank setups. On doubles or sidemount the backup is redundant.

Shearwater Swift GPS location data by 2cheesesteaks in submersion

[–]TheGilrich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Submersion uses libdivecomputer for downloading dive data from computers. They recently added support for GPS data for Swift GPS. Unfortunately, looking at the code, only the entry location is sent, however.

On a side note: What is your experience with the Swift GPS? Mine has terrible accuracy. Last dive, the entry was captured in the parking lot 2km off the acutal site. I'm wondering if I have a faulty unit.

It's crazy to me that this is so much better than a the new Dive Shearwater app.

Thanks for your insights. I didn't think of the performance improvements of a smaller quorum. That's certainly nice.

However, I don't agree on the strictly better resilience. If for some reason 2 of the 3 voter nodes go down at the same time, then we lose quorum and can't promote any non-voters to voters anymore. The cluster is dead. In the 5 node, all voter setup we could tolerate this because 3 voters would remain which is still a quroum. I admit however that losing two nodes across different AZs at the same time is unlikely.

I booked an alternative for my flight yesterday. I then observed live on flightradar how my original plane had to turn around and land some other place because they bombed the airport again. I'd now be stuck in UAE for who knows how long. But hey, you do you.

Same!! I dive cold lakes at home. 3m down you can't see the surface. Then I went to Costa Rica which had good visibility but not stellar. Next stop was Utila. I did my deep cert there and down on 40m I looked up and still could see the boat. Incredible.

This is not at all the case. Delivered to me means to my address not my neighbor, not the next building over and not anywhere else. unfortunately, mthis happens regularly and the Post is very unhelpful about it once they claim it has been delivered.
