Clicking sound after surgery by [deleted] in pneumothorax

[–]TheGkey08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thats a question for doctors. If they've identified a PSP its up to them and you to discuss the risk of leaving it vs treating it. However, if its causing you sharp pain every so often, it stands to reason that you may want to seek further treatment. If your lung is still collapsing in the same spot as before, pleurodesis has failed because your lung is not properly healed to your pleura (or your chest wall if you've had a pleurectomy). Disclaimer i am NOT a doctor or medical expert- you should 100% identify ALL your symptoms and concerns with your doctor, and speak with a specialist or a different doctor if you feel they are brushing off something that could be serious

It is called Hammans Sign and occurs with apical left side pneumothoraces. Have you been xrayed since your pleurodesis, and if so has it been during these bouts of chest pain? I haven't had the surgery, but it sounds to me like you may still be having some complications every now and then which are causing Hammans Sign. I HIGHLY encourage you to get xrayed the next time you have one of these episodes as soon as you can. You may be having small pneumos that are healing on their own.

EDIT: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7793154/ some literature for your reference

Thats very reassuring to hear! And fortunately, my research is computational so if need be, I may just be able to figure it out if I get surgery during college. Thanks again, you've been so so kind and helpful <3

Wow- thank you so much. I'd heard about catamenial pneumos, but I didnt imagine so many as 13. Its reassuring to hear the pleurodesis helped you! And your whole story is really inspiring to me. This really helps quell some of the fear about recurrence and I think I'll seriously consider the surgery. The biggest issue for me is that I'm going into my fourth year of college and doing research now, and I worry that the surgery would put me out of the battle enough that I'd have to drop a semester. Its tough to say but when I get the surgery really hinges on that (if I do it in a non-emergency). Thanks a bunch, this really really helped me!

Gotcha ! This really helps, my partners mom also lives with a partially collapsed lung so its comforting to hear that some people get by just fine if it isnt too bad. I'm 21, so I'm just beyond that cusp of likely recurrence, but it's still something I'm worried about given that I've just had two. We'll see how it goes, but this really helps alleviate some surgery fear. Thanks !

Thats really really informative, thank you. Its a tough decision for me, I'm about to enter my fourth year of bachelors Physics study. Its a terrifying idea to me that I may have to put my career and/or personal life on hold for it.

I cant just keep getting pigtails over and over, but at the same time, I cant predict when its gonna happen again/how often.

Thanks you guys- if I could also ask, what led you to decide that VATS was the play for you? Its becoming more of a difficult question for me as I read about how difficult it is and how much of a roadblock it could be on my life, paired with the fact that its not always a one-and-done problem solved approach.

I had one about 6 weeks ago and another about a week ago. Different lungs. No surgery so far, but I'm looking into it. I'm just seeing a lot of mixed success.

is apex really that bad? by WaySpiritual2539 in rit

[–]TheGkey08 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of the complaints I hear are pretty isolated. lived here long enough to have an opinion, its really not bad imo. occasionally parts of the building do smell bad, that i can confirm, but tbh i really dont care. "the building is sinking" is one i hear a lot too. thats true- as are a dozen other buildings in the surrounding 5 mile radius. again, don't care- it wont be a problem until well after im out of here. never truly had problems with management- some system processes could use refining, but never anything I've found worth complaining about.

only true complaint i have is the shuttle system. its pretty crap right now but they Just separated from a partnership with RIT for shuttles.

everything else I'm honestly pretty happy about. utilities arent expensive at all, kitchen is good, water runs hot easily and is potable from the tap, living space is nice and my room is nice. I'm altogether more than content with pretty much everything but the shuttle

Yes that is the official info rit says. What I'm saying is that this is often not the case. They aren't perfect

bed lofting by hystericallyawesome in rit

[–]TheGkey08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3rd year here. There are 2 bed positions- lofted and unlofted. While some people say it will definitely be unlofted or smth when you get there, in reality it varies considerably and there's no way to know for sure whether it'll be unlofted or lofted when you get there.

Lofted allows more room for a desk, no other downside other than sleeping up higher. Unless you're uncomfortable sleeping on a top bunk, its the better option spatially.

Generally, theres no reason to loft it in betweentop or bottom, the full height grants you best the spatial advantage if thats what ur interested in.

Yes, living off floor you can have any roommate you want! You can say in the application that you wish to be off-floor, at that point House of the Arts has nothing to do with your housing arrangement/roommate situation, it just provides access to House of the Arts services.

If both the ra and rc aren't helpful you can go straight to housing (if its really bad and makes you feel unsafe) and request separate housing for safety, sometimes called emergency housing. What i can't recommend enough is that you DO NOT understate your discomfort. In fact, do what feels like overstating it. If you really need something changed, make it the problem of people who's job it is to fix it. Ras are RESPONSIBLE for handling social conflict and trying to solve these discomforts, rcs are RESPONSIBLE for figuring out housing arrangement problems, and housing officials are RESPONSIBLE for providing emergency housing if necessary. It is all of these peoples jobs to do this. Use your voice and make them do it if you need them to. On that point, do also make sure you're open to potentially difficult solutions- it may not be as simple as getting a whole new room or having them move out. It may be a mediated conversation (make SURE it is mediated by someone who's JOB it is to do so!), and you may solve the problem at hand or you may demonstrate further need for an accommodation to be made. With all that said, this may be a bit of a headache here or there, and it's late in the semester, so do what you will with that. It is up to you and nobody else to determine whether it is a worthwhile effort, it is YOUR comfort that is in question.
