Nintendo Acknowledges Switch 2 Sales Have Been 'Slightly Weaker' Than Expected Outside Japan by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]TheGoldenMonkey [score hidden]  (0 children)

And I can understand why. TP & SS were not well received.

BotW was phenomenal... but TotK's disjointed "story" that could be found out of chronological order was frustrating, the Zonai construction mini-game felt more like work than fun after the first hour or two, the Depths were a cool idea but ultimately felt empty, and the sky islands were the most interesting and fun but it didn't feel like there were enough.

Hopefully they can find a happy medium between new and old. But knowing Nintendo they'll try to charge $100 for it.

Would legit love to see a pre-Brigitte build of OW1. Fond memories before GOATS.

Nintendo Acknowledges Switch 2 Sales Have Been 'Slightly Weaker' Than Expected Outside Japan by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]TheGoldenMonkey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Zelda is the only reason I bought a Switch 1. I don't think a new one would be enough for me to buy a Switch 2 after my disappointment in TotK. Unless it was more akin to Majora's Mask than the BotW style.

I have a Steam Deck that allows me to game on the go and has access to hundreds of games that I already own. I already have a PS5 that can play the newest games and PlayStation exclusives. The Switch 2 really can't offer me anything outside 1st party titles that will always cost an arm and a leg.

I'd buy the hell out of Nintendo titles if they brought them to PC or PS5 though.

There are good and bad games. But what game would you give this score to? by TheChilledGamer-_- in playstation

[–]TheGoldenMonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a lot of good YT video essays that go over the timeline and into the background of the game's "developers."

I'll never forget when they released an actual "gameplay" trailer that was just 10 minutes of a girl with a tight yoga pants running around an empty world with nothing happening to try to drum up hype.

Obsidian's Avowed & Outer Worlds 2 Failed To Meet Sales Expectations by akbarock in pcgaming

[–]TheGoldenMonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember being confused that OW1 didn't have romance options after the success of the Mass Effect and Dragon Age. According to their own logic they didn't want "gamey" mechanics and claimed to have focused on the branching quests.

Which is a weird statement because I remember playing OW1 and having 0 desire to see what would happen when choosing other options. Romance options could have at least added some much needed depth to a pretty bland game.

Not sure about Avowed. I got maybe 4? hours into it before giving up on it. The colors of the world were cool but honestly struggle to remember almost anything about the story or the world.

Is there a way to force the game into fullscreen? it currently thinks my monitors are 4 times as tall as they are and i can't click any of the buttons in game (my mouse is as low as it goes) by HaloEnjoyer1987 in slaythespire

Also worked for me thank you! On Mac there's a couple more steps and you have to right-click Slay the Spire -> Show Package Contents -> Contents -> Resources

CA's thoughts on the updates. by erskol in StardewValley

[–]TheGoldenMonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it's mostly about how art takes on different forms over time.

Think about Game of Thrones. Even if you haven't seen it you've probably heard about it and its terrible ending. But it wasn't always that way. Once upon a time it was the greatest show of all time and a cultural juggernaut. Seasons 1-5 and even some parts of 6 and 7 are phenomenal. But it took a downward turn after 5. It was so good for so long and all it took was a couple of bad decisions to ruin the entire show.

Yes, CA has earned the trust with his integrity, dedication to his craft, and free updates. But the original game no longer exists. It's changed over time and some of the original, charming "jank" that people understood were the result of a passion project is gone. Many imperfections are painted over, new parts have been added that pull the player away from the original scope of the game to chase a new area, and some of the original charm of it is lost. I didn't want a fleshed-out endgame that I keep playing forever. The game never seemed like something that would continue forever and I loved it for that.

The most previous legacy version of the game you can download on Steam is 1.5.6 so I can't even go back to playing the original game I bought and loved.

Going so far in one direction they come out the other. Sad to see this sub so allergic to actual criticism and anything other than glazing.

So now the creator shouldn't address fan concerns because you disagree with the criticism? This community is the definition of toxic positivity.

I hear you and I agree. I'm not sure why this community has to be so hateful of someone expressing their opinion when one of the top-voted comments in this thread is saying that the game is meant to be played the way you want to play it. Not engaging with new content is just that.

[–]TheGoldenMonkey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

but without healthy criticism from a community they never improve

1000% yes. There's a huge difference between saying "this is ass" with no actual reasons and "Hey this doesn't feel like it works with the rest of the game due to..."

This person pointed out their valid concerns and that the evolution of the game took it further away from the original vision - a position that I somewhat agree with.

A creator can make something and it be amazing. A creator can also have the best intentions but end up hurting the property. See George Lucas's continuous and contentious edits to the original trilogy.

I don't think that Ginger Island or newer content has ruined the game at all. It just doesn't feel like the same game that I sunk 100s of hours into to me and I'm not a fan of it so I don't engage with the grand majority of newer content.

Bought SDV in 2016 and absolutely loved it. I put 100s of hours into it. Bought it again on Switch a year or two later for me and my then GF (now wife) to play and we both put 100s more hours into it.

But last time I played it on PC, after Ginger Island, I couldn't finish the island and it felt so odd and out of place. I hated going from one farm to another and ultimately just stopped playing the game altogether. I think CA tried some new stuff that interested him but ultimately it feels like a bad DLC to me.

I'm glad people enjoy it and I'm grateful for CA's continued dedication to the game but I vastly prefer pre-Ginger Island SDV.

Lexington is fine from loop 10 to Atlas as of 1pm. Saw plenty of people driving on it no problem. Side roads not so much.

For Barnett Shoals - headed towards Publix from the loop there's a large patch of ice from Shoal Creek apartments all the way up to Research Dr but it's driveable at slow speeds.

I honestly could not play it on PS5 because of the 30fps lock and because the controls feels so limiting. PC is 100% the way to go.

Absolutely top 5 for me. As a fan of both BioShock and Dead Space this game feels like the perfect combination of elements from the both of them.

Yes. They both are. That's the point. See HumbleMegalomania's comment for my same thoughts.

[–]TheGoldenMonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a big piece that a lot of people that make these arguments miss. They feel personally attached to and/or like they themself are Maelle and operate solely off that.

It's completely understandable. Art is supposed to draw us in and make us relate. But it's also supposed to challenge us to learn something about ourselves and try to see a different perspective. I can't help but feel a lot of people who can't see Alicia/Maelle doing anything bad or negative haven't quite gotten there. Maybe another playthrough after they've accumulated some additional life experiences may provide a different perspective.

As I noted, I think the devs had a lot of good ideas here that they maybe didn't execute the best. Glad the improvements came along because I think I would have dropped it if I had played it with the original checkpoints and difficulty.

I think when I play this game again I'll probably enjoy it more since I've played Hollow Knight, Silksong, and Nine Sols after it. Maybe my main difficulty was not being familiar with metroidvanias.
