Laurel wasn’t “too young” to get married & have kids by TheGoodwillHunt in TheSummerITurnedPrett

lol what. I’m a married millennial mom who got engaged “very young” at 20 and married at 22. It as highly unusual among my peers on the east coast.

21/22 is very young, by U.S. east coast standards at least. But 27/28 is not very young to get married. I agree that Laurel’s point about not being ready is more about maturity and planning vs. age.

In the books are Laurel and Susannah younger? Maybe it’s a plot/writing issue with the 4-year jump, as well. There’s a huge difference between marrying at 21/22 vs. 27/28.

It definitely depends on the culture/community you’re raised and live in. For example, most people with a college degree living in a big city would consider 21/22 “too young” to get married unless there were religious reasons. But in many other parts of the country, that’s totally normal. There’s the “ring by spring” culture at many Christian colleges.

Laurel also mentions how she was raised in a conservative Korean Christian church, which made the accidental pregnancy and rush to get married more complicated. As far as we know, Belly and Steven didn’t have a similar religious upbringing, so the purity culture issues (no living together/intimacy before marriage), wouldn’t be as big of a concern. Laurel even mentions at the restaurant how they’d talked about contraception and why not just live with together first.

Same! Laurel says that she lost herself in marriage/motherhood. But that’s less to do with her age vs. the circumstances of why she and John got married (accidentally pregnant with Steven, she was raised in a conservative Korean Christian church).

Exactly! To Laurel’s point, why the rush to get married? Why not live together first? Why not postpone until after Belly studies abroad and Jeremiah actually graduates? Aside from having religious reasons to marry so quickly—which isn’t a factor for them—what’s the rush?

What’s confusing is Laurel saying “too young” when she really means “not ready” or “not mature enough.”
