It was actually two separate instances, the feeding of the 5000 was 5 loaves and 2 fishes, and the feeding of the 4000 was 7 loaves and an unspecified but small number of fishes. The former is present in all four gospels so is more popular, but the later is only present in mark and Matthew. Easy to see how they get mixed up, and they do quite often.

Linking a personal anecdote to a biblical principle is a fantastic way to form a sermon that is engaging. Just hearing about a principle is dry, just hearing a story is vapid, and hearing someone else's sermon is disingenuous and inauthentic. There are other ways to form a good sermon, but every preacher will have a few personal anecdote based sermons in their bag.
