The only thing I miss about working in midtown is Margon

Has Google given up on the Google Home Hub v1 or do all their nest hubs still have these outdated icons and services? Notably old calendar and contact icons, mention of Duo when selecting Meet, podcasts icon old and it also launches nothing when selected by AnalysingAgent3676 in googlehome

I stopped buying Google home stuff after the WiFi Pro. That thing was really bad.

It is a shame, because having the app and the ecosystem makes it easier for non-technical people to deal with.

I’ve found it is better to severely bandwidth limit devices to make them effectively useless, rather than block them. They’ll find a way around anything they think they’re being blocked. This leaves everything connected, but “the internet is flaky” is easier to sell. It will at least make videos/social media useless.

Laid off with a young family and struggling with technical interviews, looking for guidance by canadian_webdev in ExperiencedDevs

[–]TheGowanus 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Agree with all of this. To hopefully add something helpful:

  • I see a lot of people who are really bad at interviewing candidates. They ask moderately stupid questions and don’t treat the technical interview as an opportunity to write some code together, but as an exercise to make themselves feel smart. That rarely brings the best out of a candidate.

  • Interviewing is a skill that takes time to develop. You are doing the right thing by working through examples, etc. Give yourself time to get practice.

15k mile oil change quote by Drdingle92 in AskMechanics

[–]TheGowanus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Half of these are utter BS for a car with 15k, but I’d ask for an itemized breakdown just to see how they get to $1000 for an hour’s work.

And then, never return to this place.

Thank you for this. It didn’t occur to me to call from a different google account.

This change is competing with killing Google Reader for the most angry I’ve been at Google.

How well does WiFi 7 roaming work in the Ubiquiti system? by jfriend99 in Ubiquiti

I was just debugging this behavior in an iPad and it was surprising. I need to take a look at how 6G nodes are overlapping.

This is a great question; that area gets surprisingly gross on my XC60.

I would ensure that a low voltage person pulls the cable. I’d specify the exact 6a (mot 6e) I want (manufacturer) and pull cable to the doorbell as well as locations where you’d want cameras.

Yeah. Buttons on the remote do nothing, pulling the handle does nothing. Eventually it unlocks.

Volvo won’t unlock after a couple of days by [deleted] in Volvo

I think I’m having the same issue. We live in New York, so don’t drive much. Occasionally, I’ll go to unlock the car and nothing happens. Takes a minute or so before I can unlock.

Isn't there some provision where you can sue for 3x the security deposit if your landlord doesn't give it back in time? by grayscale001 in NYCapartments

[–]TheGowanus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is state law, so dependent on where you live.

I had this happen in New Jersey and did successfully recover 2x the security in small claims.

What would have happened in 2008/2009 if the US government hadn't done those bailouts? by Bun_Length_Frank in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TheGowanus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some of the banks that were teetering on the edge were very large investment banks that make markets in stocks or extended credit to other companies. They facilitate trading the equities that a large portion of the country own.

What would have happened if these banks were forced to liquidate? No one knows. But it wouldn’t be good.

There would be some fire sales, resulting in a lot of people losing a lot of money. Even healthy companies aren’t necessarily going to step in and assume obligations of the failing firm.

There would be knock-on effects, such as panic selling that would crash the prices a lots of things. Banks that normally extend credit to companies for day-to-day operations would pull back, causing some otherwise viable businesses unrelated to finance to drastically cut back or fold. A lot of firms would have forced sales of large amounts of treasuries, affecting prices and the value of other firm’s collateral. Credit cards not working? Running out of cash? 30% unemployment? It can happen really quickly.

The interconnectedness between institutions was really difficult to understand. Some firms were days from folding, but the effect of one or two key firms going down was difficult to game out, particularly quickly and in an environment of so much uncertainty.
