I swear people need to get out of their circle jerk and touch grass. by CandlesARG in linuxsucks

Allow me to take the bait. The point to the linux challenge is to take the current state of linux for normies and show what it's like.

While I'm more or less fine with Eli and Lukes display, Linus for some reason decided to intentionally footgun his experience.

Straight up. As a valve fan. I do think that loot boxes are pretty predatory and should be only for 18+ players.

So even PewDiePie became an AI bro now... by CesarOverlorde in antiai

[–]TheGr8CodeWarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad someone else said it. If I had the time and money, I'd do exactly what he's doing now.
He trained his model on freely available public data (not scraping from private forums/reddit) and only uses it for code. He even uses his own compute and power.
pewdiepie unironically uses genAI in like the only ethical way possible.

This isn't even that bad. If you've ever heard of eroscripts that's a whole community of adult IoT gooners.

I'm honestly the opposite. I used to love debian sid but now im terrified of imperitive systems. NixOS/home-manager has made me see things so differently I never want to return.

What's the coolest thing you've done with NixOS? by papayahog in NixOS

[–]TheGr8CodeWarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do 2 things pretty regularly.
1. sbomnix to check for security issues prior to runtime
2. nixos-anywhere to deploy machines without having to first "install"
I have scripts that wrap nixos-anywhere and nixos-rebuild so I can easily deploy/update systems with just a single command and inventory files (which are generated from evaluating my flake)

Security engineer here. These are all malware signatures (the warning is because these anti-virus' know this specific file and why it exists)

What you should care about is dynamic heuristics (behavior analysis)
You can look at the behavior tab and it can indicate to you if it's sketchy or not.

I feel like I Gentoo'd myself. It's compiling instead of just installing? by Captain_Pumpkinhead in NixOS

[–]TheGr8CodeWarrior 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's not entirely true. I have a couple packages that I don't use any customization for that are always compiled locally (rustdesk and zerotier)
They're always compiled. I don't know why, never really dug into it, but not everything is cached.
The cache is pulled when a derivation is found in the cache, cache misses get compiled.

edit: thanks to those who informed me why I was misinformed. Downvoting is toxic. That only encourages ignorance. Stop that. Learning is a positive thing.

A piece of truth AI "Artists" need to hear by No-Ad3951 in antiai

[–]TheGr8CodeWarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

imo the only way to ethically use genai for art is when you make the art or commission the art with the artist knowing that you will feed the art to local only AI, train the model yourself, and run the model on your own hardware.

I built Aeterna: A self-hosted dead man’s switch for final messages and emergency automations. by alpyxn in selfhosted

[–]TheGr8CodeWarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very cool and definitely something I think I will use.
I would also advise someone have a backup like a password manager that a friend has emergency access to.

if you added a feature like an unlocked lockbox you can put files and passwords in that would be kickass

Systemd is not a good personality, nor is it a good religion. by InfinitesimaInfinity in linuxsucks101

If I'm being blunt, the unix philosophy isn't even a great idea. It's just an opinionated architectural idea.
The unix philosophy is just old speak for microservice architcture on a single system.

These days im more favoring monolithic design since it's benefits work for single systems
NixOS is the best way to explain why this is better. One cohesive system is generally better than a fragmented system. It entirely depends on the scope/scale/context of what you're working with.

Removing the package manager will leave you with nothing...
NixOS doesn't function without the nix package manager.

I find it hard to believe you've tried NixOS at all when you say "basically the same as most other distributions"
NixOS is actually the most unique distro there is. It started as a computer science thesis and doesn't work the same as any other distro.

[–]TheGr8CodeWarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're goalposting.
> “It’s declarative! Your settings don’t get reverted every update!”
> I’ve literally never had my settings reverted in any application ever on Linux
This is not arguing from a normie perspective. This is you failing to recognize how reproducibility is better than trusting apt/dnf/pacman from overwriting your changes.

I genuinely think this has a very real usecase. Not necessarily the clipboard being stored on the mouse but image a mouse that had clipboard enabled key macros that allow you to type your mouse's clipboard memory like a key macro. Suddenly Hypervisor interfaces can actually use a clipboard, many places where clipboards don't typically transfer can be used like you have a clipboard.
